UGLY American Girl Doll

Gosh--what an ugly doll!!!! Also, I saw a picture of Kristen in the AG magazine. It was advertising the AG doll hospital. it showed Kristen's hair all messed up. The AG hospital was able to reapir it--for a price, of course, then add in s&H, you might as well buy a new one. It just showed how unmanagable the Kristen hair is.

I don't think they showed Kirsten doll because her hair is ugly in all dolls. Most likely because it is one of the older dolls and it is more likely to find one like that, that could use some AG hospital help. My niece has it Kirsten (the doll is 11 years old) and her hair needed help. Instead of sending it back (since my nieces Kirsten is pre Mattel and worth more) I did a downy dunk on it, (they describe how to it at many AG fan sites.) It did great. I don't really recommend this drastic of action with a new doll though. (washing and soaking the hair in downy.)

Maybe your DD's one doll isn't the best one, but many Kirsten dolls are. I agree with LuluLovesDisney (musical Velveteen rabbit how funny, BTW my DH's cousin was the rabbit in such a kids play last year.) It isn't about you, but your DD. If you want a pretty dress up in today clothes then a new just like you doll is the way to go. They have a lot like you described to choose from. (maybe the new GT27H or GT22H, GT24H or even GT6H would work great too.) I like the just like you dolls for younger girls too (because they don't need to appreciate the historic component.)

Sounds like your Aunt has some issues about how she grew up. Don't make them DD's. If you DD likes the doll, I don't really see what the problem is.

The new doll of the year 2007 (come out Jan 1st) Niki is supposed to have long brown curly hair. (Some no dolls currently have.) That could be fun too. Since my youngest has hair like that, I think we might need to get it sometime in 2007.

Have you tried the Doll Hair book from American Girl? My dd has it and it has hair styles for dolls of every hair type. It even has styles for short haired dolls. You probably could style the shorter haired doll. And give Kirsten's hair some time. It probably will eventually straighten out.

Thanks--I'll look for the book!

I had(ve) 6 ag dolls, and all the hair is different.

I find that if you brush it too much it is frizzier. Every other day at the most is sufficient. HAve you been misting the hair while brushing?

I would let the doll's hair stay untouched for a few days, then brush while isting the hair with water.

If worst comes to worst, wash the hair in the way recommended in the hair care guide. I also think that there are some special tips regarding Kirsten's hair in there, since she is generally considered a "textured hair" doll.

Thanks--I'll look for the book!

Barnes & Noble has several books available on how to style and care for your AG doll(s). I noticed them in the kids' book section while I was getting DD's mini-AG dolls for Christmas. If you have a Barnes & Noble membership card, the $20 mini dolls are $17.95 (each 6.5 inch doll includes a mini book in its box, just like the ones from the AG catalog/site.

These mini dolls were my DD's intro to AG dolls. But late last summer she got a My Twinn doll, which she loves! If you haven't seen those dolls, you might want to give them a look (mytwinn.com). They're like a more personalized version of the JLM dolls by AG. You can select skin, eye and hair color, then send a photo of your child along with your order and they'll make you a doll with your child's face shape and distinguishing marks, even match the hairstyle to your specs. My DD is 5 1/2, and she LOVES that doll!!!!!

My Twinn also has a pretty big selection of clothing, furniture and accessories to go along with the dolls. Sporty outfits, party dresses, casual stuff, pj's.....all with matching outfits for the child! And right now they happen to be having a great sale. Just got 3 new outfits for my DD and her doll.

OK, sorry for the long commercial-ish rant. We now resume our regularly scheduled thread........

I agree with the prevoius posters. Using your AG brush or other wig brush. Mist her hair with water (generously) and begin brush starting from the ends to get out tangles. Be sure to protect the eyes. For her bangs, I've seen them use a toothbrush at the Hairsalon and just snip off any ragged/stray pieces. Good Luck!
