Just found out I'll be working Christmas day, from 4am until 1pm. Oh boy. My heart goes out to all nurses, police, and firefighters who will also be working that day. Hope my kids understand

Sorry to hear this. I've been deployed at Christmas many times. I feel for you. Celebrate it early, you're kids will have a blast. Good luck and merry Christmas. :santa:

Sorry to hear about this, my dad works Christmas every year but thats just because he's miserable :lmao:

Just noticed the name of the place you're from too, I like it ;)

:goodvibes

Both my son (FF) and his Fiance (nurse) work Christmas Day this year. Brian from 7am -7 am (24 hour shift) and Kailynn (7am - 7pm) so we are just going to do Christmas on the 26th..

When my kids were little and their dad worked on Christmas Day (also a FF), somehow Santa knew and the gifts arrived on the 24th with a note that Santa wanted daddy to see the presents as well. The stocking though, those always were filled for Christmas morning. Boys thought they were very special as Santa came to the house twice for them :santa: maybe he can do that at your house as well.

Thanks for the sacrifices you make, I know how hard it is for you and your family.

what a sweet story! :)

Zdog - What a disappointment! For YOU and your kids. How old are they? The good news is that you still have time to make a new plan that will work for your family...Good luck!

i'M hospice nurse and I will be working on Christmas too. Luckily I will celebrate the following week with a New Year's celebration at WDW.:cool1:

BOTH of my parents worked at the hospital - mom was an R.N., and dad was a Respiratory Therapist, for almost 40 years a piece. So I appreciate all you do on these days...

I only have to be on-call on holidays. Some companies think that their web sites are life-and-death critical... :(

I've worked Computer customer service every christmas when i was working and enjoyed it. Customers used to call in and even though their computers were not working they were still jovial enough to not scream over the phone at us. That didn't mean that the kids weren't doing the screaming but anyway it was always a great time to work. Honestly it was one of the slowest times also, go figure. not to mention that we were paid double time during the entire day.

I do not celebrate X-mas as a religious holiday due to my religion but I do celebrate it as a time to get together with my friends, many of which do celebrate x-mas.

Happy Holidays and a very happy and prosperous new year all.

I knew I could count on my diser friends. Appreciate the support, and knowing I'm not the only one (of course;) ) makes it a little easier. For those of you who are deployed and far from home, god bless and thank you for everything you are doing.

Sorry to hear about that. While I was in college I worked for a company that shipped dead bodies and cremains around the globe. We were opened every second of the year because people don't not die on holidays. Back then we got 2.5x pay for the big holidays and I needed the money so I volunteered for all of them. Do you have someone who needs the extra pay that might be willing to switch? This is provided they give you at least time and a half for the holiday.

Its 2.5x pay, so I should probably shut my mouth, do my job, and enjoy the extra pay. My daughter cried when I told her yesterday (she's 10)...so I wasn't feeling any better about things. It'll all be better in August, when I'm spending the money I earn on Christmas, at my favorite place in Orlando:goodvibes

My husband's dad is a minister...so growing up, every Christmas was an exercise in patience. No presents until all the church services were over!

My Dad, bless his soul :cloud9:, sailed for a living (merchant marine) so he was not consistently home on Christmas. :goodvibes When he was home we had to get washed and dressed and have breakfast (and he had to have breakfast) before we opened our gifts. He used to linger over his tea before he deemed it time to open our gifts. He would drag it out for the longest time. :goodvibes Santa decorated our tree & it was often a Charley Brown tree as my parents didn't have a lot of money. Mommy would wait until the tree selling places were closing so she could get a left over tree for a cheap price.:thumbsup2 Some of our trees were a bit bare, but Santa always did a wonderful job of decorating them. I think they were some of the bestest trees I ever saw:cheer2: I miss my Daddy.
But this will be a great Christmas as my mom is still with us (82 years young) and my nephew isn't deployed this year and they are actually close by (in VA) so they will be up for Christmas and I will get to see all of them on Christmas day.
I guess this went off topic, but the positive attitude in this thread sent me on this memory journey. Thank you. :goodvibes Penny

I had to work last year on Christmas (7am-7pm) so we did the family Christmas on Christmas Eve and lucky for me my girls woke up before I went to work so I could see them open their gifts from Santa before I left for work (I did wake up early so I was showered and ready).

We have a roatating holiday schedule at work so everyone works every holiday every three years so it is fair to everyone. This year I work on New Year's Day - not a big deal for me.

DH's dept rotates schedules and DH's squad got stuck this year working almost every holiday - he worked Thanksgiving, he'll be working Christmas, and New Years. It makes it tough when you have little ones to explain why mommy or daddy won't be home but we are thankful they do come home. God Bless our troops, police, firefighters, EMT'S, and all emergency responders this holiday season - Lord, keep them safe and bring them home to their families because that is the best Christmas present ever.

I'm working Christmas this year, too. It's 4pm-12am, and I will likely still get Christmas morning, but still. Adolescent residential behavioral treatment never takes a holiday, even though us Program Counselors are the only ones working. :( I hope someone doesn't get restrained.

DH was overseas for one Christmas...that was tough for us both, and my cousin was killed in Iraq that Christmas Eve, which made it even harder here. But, although DH works most holidays as a cop anyway, having him just a half hour away is so much better! We just need to be flexible on how we celebrate the holidays with the boys now sometimes!

:goodvibesMy dad was a firefighter and worked many a Christmas! We would always come home from Midnight Mass and be allowed to open one present. My parents would pick what present it was and it was usually a game or something fun to play with, and then we would go to sleep and my dad would get ready for work.

We would wait all day for him to arrive to open the rest of the gifts, but in the meantime we at least had something new to play with that made it a bit more bearable.

I'll be working Christmas too! We work 12 hour shifts, so I'll be at the police dept 6a-6p waiting on those Christmas domestic calls. Joy!
