My DH called me at 2:30 to say he was having severe chest pain and couldn't breathe. Of course I told him to call 911 but he didn't want to do that because he "didn't want everyone in the office watching him leave in an ambulance" :headache:, so I asked him to have one of his coworkers to drive him to the hospital. I ran around putting the kids in the car only to realize that with the snow we've had I couldn't get our front-wheel-drive car out of our development and was never going to make it downtown, not to mention the fact that our hospital won't let anyone under 18 inside, anyway. Fortunately, our pastor offered to drive me in his truck and another friend let us drop the kids at her house on the way out. I raided our safe of the cash we had stashed there (grabbed it all in a panic, thinking I might have to pay for parking, etc., and didn't just grab $20 - stupid me) before I left. Got to the hospital and the good news was it wasn't a heart attack. He has a punctured lung and they have no idea how it happened ("spontaneous pneumothorax"??), but they kept him overnight on oxygen and morphine. Thank goodness for insurance, but hello high-deductible coverage. Got home only to discover that the cash I grabbed must have fallen out of my pocket and I couldn't find it anywhere. I called the pastor and he found it in his truck, so I'm glad it turned up, but I feel physically drained and a little ill over the day in general. It's supposed to keep snowing tonight into tomorrow and I have no idea how I'm going to get him home from the hospital, but I guess I'll worry about that tomorrow. I'm so thankful it wasn't worse, but ugh - I think I'm ready for this day to be over! With the high deductible, we are looking at a nice chunk of change. I'm really glad for the emergency fund and the bit we've got left in the Health Savings Account, but I think the budget is going to be pretty tight for awhile.

Sounds like a rough day! Glad to hear your DH is okay.

My DS12 had a spontaneous pneumothorax about 5 minutes after he was born. The doc said it's something that can happen to anybody at anytime.

The day COULD'VE been much worse. Hopefully you can unwind now and get some sleep. Glad hubby is OK!

 Wow, how scary!! Glad hubby is ok! Don't worry about tomorrow yet, it sounds like you have friends & support that will help get him home. Get some rest and take care! I'm sorry about the ins but glad your funds were found!

I'm glad your DH is ok. Try to look on the bright side that everything worked out in the end!

Thanks, guys. In retrospect, it could have been so much worse, so I'm glad he's going to be OK. The air space tripled overnight, so they are going to let it out with a needle and said he might be able to come home tomorrow or Thursday. Hopefully by then the weather will have improved so I can go get him myself instead of relying on someone else to drive me.

Whoa - scary! Glad everything turned out as well as it could of in the circumstances

This is a perfect time to count your blessings!!!
Not a heart attack (which would have cost more in the long run) and you found the cash! Had friends to help you get to the hospital and watch your kids.
Sounds like it turned out a lot better than it could have!

With the high deductible, we are looking at a nice chunk of change. I'm really glad for the emergency fund and the bit we've got left in the Health Savings Account, but I think the budget is going to be pretty tight for awhile.

I totally understand your worry, we have high deductible coverage too ($15k - people with good insurance or in a state with options think I am making that up). With $500 monthly premiums even for that, I am sometimes tempted to give it up but we keep it so that we won't lose our house if one of us has a health crisis. Good luck to you.

Having that Spending Account really helps out. Of course I'm always so afraid to use it at the beginning of the year, that at the end of the year, I'm scheduling in the last dentist appointments, eye exams, and getting any meds I think we'll need. Right now there's 550$ sitting in the account. Thankfully it can be used until March.

Wow, what a day you've had! Hugs to you and your family and thank God it wasn't worse!!!:grouphug:

Man, what a day. I am glad that your DH is doing well. We had a high deductible plan last year, of course one month after that happened DH ended up in the ICU with what we thought was a heart attack as well. It turned out to be Myocarditis and he was in the ICU for 2.5 days. Our deductible wasn't THAT high, $4K, but it was all due to the hospital from that incident. We have been paying them peanuts on a montly basis so it hasn't impacted our budget too much ... they get their money, we get it paid for. Is that an option for you? It isn't affect our credit because it was a plan we came up with from the hospital so they are happy too.

I am glad he's ok ... that's most important.

I'm so glad he will be ok.

Talk to the hospital, most of them will let you make payments. They did when we had our 2 year old.

I'll give the hospital a call when we start getting the bills from them to see if we can work out a payment plan. Our pastor mentioned this, too. I guess as long as we are paying off something every month (even if it's just $100) they will usually work with you? Good thing the budget board is here for me to get ideas for stretching what is left of our budget!

Our baby bill was about 1500. The hospital asked for $88 a month and about a year later settled the rest of the bill for about 120. We were never late they were just trying to close out old accts.
