My two kiddos and I are all sick with the common cold. My dd is a little more sick than the rest of us . She coughs to the point of spitting up sometimes and has asthma. This is'nt the first time she's had a pretty bad cold with asthma . Her doctor most of the time doesnt prescribe anything at all other than her albuterol . Her albuterol is working just fine. It stops her coughing fits and she plays happily/eat/runs around etc. Im not one of those parents that runs to the dr everytime my child has a cough . There is no cure for the common cold with time it will go away. We have OJ, vitamins etc. ....Why do i have to go the dr's office just so she can say ooohhh she has a cold...DUH ...

Anyway several ppl in my family are mad at me for not taking my kiddos to the dr . I know my kids and i know when a cold is serious enough to go to the dr. I wish they would shut up and leave me alone instead of making dumb threats like ooooohhh im not going to go to disney with you ! SO WHAT ? Dont go ! Your loss not mine

I'm with you. I know when my kids are sick enough to go to the Dr. I don't bring them for every little cold/virus. I actually bring them more than I would because I like to rule out strep since my girls have had it so often in the past.

It seems like they are concerned for your kids. Take it for what it is. I have asthma, too. I have had several colds get much nastier and become complicated by bacteria. If I had a trip coming up I would probably get in and see a doctor and I would make sure my asthma was well controled. Albuterol generally isn't a control medication.

my DS3 does the asthma cough and puke too. You are right, unless they have a fever or some other symptom, it is just a cold.

Really? They're not going to Disney with you because you didn't take your DD to the dr? Not a decision I'd make!!! LOL!!!

You are doing what I'd do & i am also an RN. I think it's nuts when you run to thr dr. for every cold/ ache or pain. You sound like a great mom who knows her child. Don't let the neurotics get to you. :flower3:

And hugs to your DD & all your family. Hope the colds are cleared up soon! :goodvibes

My grandmother is the last one i spoke to and she hung up on me after i said NO im not going to the dr's office . She really hates that because she is so old and takes all types of pills and concoctions. She thinks they have a liquid or medicine that will knock the cold out of my kids. I said uhhh there's no cure or medicine for the common cold to "Cure" it so we will ride it out ! LEAVE ME ALONE ! They act like they are experts...this is the same ppl that when i was a child they pulled out a jar of vicks vapor rub took out a heaping tablespoon and made me swallow it and go to sleep despite my protests !

How long have your children been ill?

They made you EAT VICKS???? :scared1: Yikes, I thought my parents were bad enough to just slather that nasty stuff on me. ;)

You're the mom, you know your kids, I'm with you on this one. We never ran to the doctor for every cough when the child was little. If she started running a fever AFTER a cold, or if she showed some other new symptoms...then yes, we'd go.

But little kids get a BUNCH of colds each year. Going to the doctor each time is ridiculous.

Sorry your family is being so unreasonable. I wouldn't listen to anyone who made me eat Vicks either!

They do that b/c some folks foolishly believe that all antibiotics will solve the problem.

I only go to the doc when I am unsure of the illness and it is uncomfortable OR OTC meds aren't working.

My kids are about the same.

As long as your coughing children aren't going to birthday parties & playdates and infecting all the other kids with their germs, I'd say it's no one else's business.

I

When I had my first child, it was also my mom's first grandchild. I always used to get that. She was shocked when the ped wouldn't prescribe an antibiotic.

Now, after 9 grandkids, she's realized its just not that way anymore LOL!

Isn't Vicks a petroeum product? It's a wonder you're alive!

OMG grannies are the worst. They want to drag up some crap done in the 1800's instead of just using common sense.

Not along the lines of sickness but way back when my oldest son was a baby my ex's grandma was always taking away his pacifier and trying to make him cry. She said it would help develop his lungs  I said his lungs were developed when he was born otherwise he would still be in the hospital.

We are the same way and still get comments from family members like "Did you take them to the dr?" But the kicker here is that my husband IS a dr! Anesthesia, not peds, but still, we like to think he'd know whether or not their illness warranted a trip to the ped's. He has never diagnosed nor prescribed anything for our kids, he always leaves that up to their ped, so he wouldn't hesitate to tell me to take them in if he thought it were necessary. But 99% of the time he doesn't think it is, and the kids always get better. Out of 3 kids only 1, my oldest, has ever taken an antibiotic and that was for a UTI because she has kidney reflux (she was also on prophylactic antibiotics for awhile because of the kidney reflux). Wait, I take that back, my son also took a prophylactic antibiotic when he had surgery as an infant. But that's it in 6 years for 3 kids.

We have a lot of friends and family members who run to the dr for everything and we never tell them not to, so it would be nice if we got the same respect for staying home!

People just don't understand cough varient asthma. As her parent, you know whether it's improving, whether her inhalers are working appropriately etc.
This is one of those things you'll have to develop a thick skin over and continue to do what you know is right. My grandma, my dad, me, my son ... we've all had/have it.

At this point I just give them the long winded "I have reactive airway disease that manifests itself in cough varient asthma whenever my upper respiratory system is compromised, even with a common cold. I'm following the treatment protocol laid out by my physician...." It shuts them up.

I understand where you're coming from.

One time my doctor told me that I could come to him if I had a cold and the cold would last a week. Or I could stay home, self medicate with over-the-counter stuff and the cold would last 7 days.

The only time I will go to the doctor for a cold is if the sore throat gets really bad, might be strep. Or if I have a hacking cough that won't go away. Other than that I drug up at home and deal with it.

Not sure if this will be helpful or not, but, my allergies to my pets (I refuse to get rid of them, and I had them prior to developing allergies) makes me cough up a lung just about every morning (until my allergy pill kicks in).

Sometimes the coughing is so bad, (this is gross, so not stop reading now if you have a weak tummy), that I actually have to vomit to get the "gunk" up because coughing doesn't do the trick.

My husband and I do a "jungle cruise" joke about it when it happens. I'll tell him "I thought it was mucous, but it'snot"

Could she possibly have developed an allergy to any pets you have? I never had allergies, but I developed them over years. I just deal with it, although sometimes it's annoying.

We've had the cold for less than a week now. We were all healthy until we spent the weekend at HER house . I complained nonstop about all of the old crap in the room we were breathing in ...next day dd wakes up sick as a dog . That night we get home and were all coughing . I got better, ds got better but dd stayed sick. We all got sick again and were still coughing. I dunno but its just a cold i think we should all be okay by Wednesday at the latest . We leave for our first trip to Disney Saturday May 1st 3:00 am ! I hope dd's 100% recovered and able to have a blast but im confident she will be!

Im surprised I havent died from the Vicks thing too! I protested but you know how the elders are they always know best and i was a child I was too scared to outright refuse the Vicks . It was a HEAPING tablespoon full I feel dizzy just thinking about it .

I'm always suprised by the people on here who go to the ER for minor things. Like is someone posts that their child has a fever of 102, someone will say 'you better go to the ER." Really?? The ER is the last place I want to go and I avoid it at all costs. I know my kids and have always known when they are really sick ie. swine flu, pneumonia vs. just a virus.
