Ugh please stop telling me how to parent!!!

Please stop bragging about free health insurance and pensions, since the rest of us, who don't have these perks, are the ones paying for them.

Not bragging, just pointing out that there are plenty o f working folks who do not have to pay a co-pay.

If you think you(general you) are the one paying for my health insurance and pension, then all I can say is thank you.

Since our family members live in other states, they tend to panic more when they hear my kids coughing over the phone. I get the when are they going to the doctor, what have you given them and all that. I just tell them what they don't have (fever, chills) and promise to overdose them on vitamins (which I don't but how are they gonna find out?). I find it annoying but at least I know they care.

I finally had to google "eating Vicks vaporrub" since I never heard of doing that. Lots of hits came up. Who would have guessed? Some people even still eat it & love it.

I love the smell and the warm feeling, but don't think I'll be adding any to my diet soon.

Maybe this was a regional thing. :confused3

I did the same thing. The more I read about it the more I gagged!:rotfl: Seems some people have actual cravings for the stuff. NASTY! Guess they have a deficiency somewhere.

My mother was a pediatric intensive care nurse and saw the sickest of the sick children. This has left her completely paranoid and convinced that we should run to the doctor for EVERYTHING.

Headache? Perhaps it's meningitis. Have you considered a spinal tap? :scared1:

A little blemish on the skin? Probably a staph infection. Time for a total blood workup. :scared1:

She's a nut. I think running to the doctor for every little sniffle is obnoxious.

I'm with you OP.

I feel for you, AND your mom... I am a respiratory therapist and work in a hospital with a few very busy ICU's. We see EVERYTHING and I become a bit paranoid at times. How I have to look at it is this way... we see the smallest percentages... the headache that WAS meninigitis... the skin blemish that WAS flesh eating bacteria... I could drive myself nuts (and sometimes do) worrying that the kids or myself or my DH have every disease in the book (I was just looking at a bruise on my leg wondering where it came from... uh-oh cancer... then I remembered I bumped my leg unloading the new bushes from my truck).

SO, back to the OP's issue... I tend to NOT run to the Dr's with every little cough/complaint to the opposite degree.... usually when I DO go to the Dr's she is telling me I should have come earlier, or should have gone to the ER instead.

ETA... In 2006 I ignored a cough I had myself that got so severe I threw up from coughing. I went to the Dr's and they immediately made me put on a mask... my Dr suspected Whooping Cough, swabbed me, and yep, I was positive for it. Come to find out, I had treated a patient in the ER w/ nebs who came in complaining of persistant cough... who later came back and tested positive for pertusis (the whooping cough). A few of us at my work ended up with it, and my whole family had to take prophylactic antibiotics. I was on antibiotics for a month, and coughed for three months. It was HORRIBLE... so now when I call my Dr's for anything she says "Get in here". Her staff joking refers to me as "outbreak monkey" (I am friendly w/ them... not offended).

Maybe they just assumed she doesn't have a co-pay. I don't know anyone who has one.

Who the heck doesn't have a co-pay? People on public assistance, maybe. :confused3 DH has been working for the same large company for 10 years, and yet we pay $25 for the pediatrician, $40 for specialists. I don't know a single person here without a co-pay.

My husband is a county employee and the first 8 years we had no co-pay. Now its $10.

Oh my gosh I'm not the only person who had to swallow vicks!!! My parents put it on my chest , in the vaporizer and I got to take a big ol spoon full. My mom even puts in on her forehead when she has a bad headache.

Ah, thanks for another reminder of why teachers shouldn't be getting raises this year!

????? DH is a teacher (and yes, in a union. We have a copay, and pay a lot into our insurance. He is getting his first raise in years next school year (1% I believe). I hope you were kidding, that he shouldn't get a raise this year?

TO the OP: go with your instincts about when to see the dr. With asthma myself, I know about colds leading to bronchitis. Bronchitis is rarely bacterial, generally is still a virus...so unless your dd is to the point of needing steroids, or the albuterol no longer works for her, I think you are doing the right thing in being cautiously watchful. You'll know when to talk to her dr. (not run to the ER, lol.)

OMG, severe storm coming. It just got SOOOOOO dark in the past 3 minutes! Off to close windows

If he's not in NJ, I couldn't care less! Our new governor just cut one billion dollars in educational spending. Our property taxes are the highest in the nation. Our teacher salaries are the third highest in the nation. The teachers in my town start at $45,000 a year, and pay nothing into their health insurance. However, they did get a 4 percent raise, even though so many here have had pay freezes and cuts. People asked for just a one year freeze, to avoid some program cuts and losing teachers. Nope. I did hear that the governor is going to put a 2.9 percent cap on raises, and they won't get the 4 percent.

The NJEA is not looked upon fondly by many people here, and hasn't for years. Our schools are in some serious trouble right now. Half of the school budgets didn't pass - that's unheard of! Ours passed by 4 votes.

My two kiddos and I are all sick with the common cold. My dd is a little more sick than the rest of us . She coughs to the point of spitting up sometimes and has asthma. This is'nt the first time she's had a pretty bad cold with asthma . Her doctor most of the time doesnt prescribe anything at all other than her albuterol . Her albuterol is working just fine. It stops her coughing fits and she plays happily/eat/runs around etc. Im not one of those parents that runs to the dr everytime my child has a cough . There is no cure for the common cold with time it will go away. We have OJ, vitamins etc. ....Why do i have to go the dr's office just so she can say ooohhh she has a cold...DUH ...

Anyway several ppl in my family are mad at me for not taking my kiddos to the dr . I know my kids and i know when a cold is serious enough to go to the dr. I wish they would shut up and leave me alone instead of making dumb threats like ooooohhh im not going to go to disney with you ! SO WHAT ? Dont go ! Your loss not mine

Then you shouldn't have mentioned that your kids are sick.

As far as traveling with you...I would pass.
Also if your kids are sick is it really that important to travel?
What about the people you expose? Not everyone has a strong immunity & IMHO being selfish stinks.
I think about the Make a Wish kids.....so frail & here comes sneezy, wheezy & coughy.....:headache:
Just not nice.

Are you serious? The child has had a cold for a week. The trip is not for another couple of weeks. Colds usually take about two weeks to cycle through. Going to a doctor isn't going to change that. They should be well over the colds by the trip. Lingering coughs are just a fact of life with cough varient asthma. A doctor would laugh at the notion of keeping the child quaranteened until it is gone.

It always is buggy when folks expect any person to be 100% symptom free. In many illnesses, you are no longer contagious after a certain point anyway.

Of course use good hygeine along the way. No surprise sneeze showers or cough loogies or anything.

I'm just amazed at the thought that there are folks that actually expect folks to stay quarantined until they are symptom free.

For me--with no asthma--but allergies--my sinuses/sneezing and coughing....It's pitiful that I get strange looks and have to clarify my condition before I'm "excused" for having the audacity to be out in public in such a sickly condition.

As for medicine--I'm taking what I can, but I can't really take my good stuff while pregnant b/c it is class C and I can survive on Benadryl even though it doesn't completely do the trick. I still have the symptoms, but they don't bother me as much.

And I do have a way to differentiate an allergy from being sick--but it would be too disgusting to share it here.

It would just be wonderful if people minded their own p's and q's instead of being so dang nosy into matters that don't concern them.

You didn't say you were going in a few weeks:rolleyes:

Lisa loves Pooh, it is other people's business when parents allow their snowflake on vacation at other people's expense. Same holds true with school~

Sharing is lovely but please keep your germs to yourself & think outside your own universe.

No it isn't.. Your entitlement though isn't unnoticed.

You might wish to go and study illnesses to see how they work before passing judgement that my "snorting" 9yo who has sinus issues related to her allergies that you cannot catch is a snowflake disrupting your germ-fearing life.

You might wish to follow your own advice on that last part since you presume that a stranger is a snowflake.

Based on my career path germ fearing is far from my radar.

Anyhow if entitlement means others keeping their sick kids & themselves home when they are ill I gladly accept the title.

I was speaking of allergies. Please explain how it is any of your business of the origins of my mucous?

My oldest dd has terrible allergies. Her hacking cough is horrible sounding but NOT contagious. In fact last year in school she wanted me to get her a t-shirt that said 'It's allergies not swine flu!"

We've had the cold for less than a week now. .......We leave for our first trip to Disney Saturday May 1st 3:00 am ! I hope dd's 100% recovered and able to have a blast but im confident she will be!
.

Since that post was written on the 23rd that should put her cold at two weeks from onset.

I'm not going anywhere in a few weeks. I am going to be there right before Christmas though. Since I have cough varient asthma and am allergic to Christmas trees I can pretty much guarantee I'll be coughing. Sorry if I refuse to believe I'm vacationing at someone else's expense because of it.:rolleyes1

Do you seriously think you can go ANYWHERE in public at ANY time and not be exposed to germs??? If you are so worried to be in WDW while someone has a cold, then I respectfully suggest you stay home and spray a little Lysol around your bubble.

Eating Vicks is disgusting! How could you ever trust someone like that to tell you anything about your health? I used to hate having that stuff rubbed on my chest when I was a kid - always made me feel like my skin was on fire. I did like the Vicks little tube thing that you could put in your nostril and inhale - opened me right up. I wonder if they still make those? :surfweb:

they do still make Vicks Inhalers, I just used one a few weeks ago.

Of course not but I do know people allow their children & themselves to go into public places when it is know they are sick & contagious.
This site is packed w/ people who refuse to cancel/postpone a trip when there is illness in the family. DO I think it's selfish? 100% yes!

Being someone who has an enormous amount of allergies I sympathize when people are miserable from allergies......

At this moment I'm sick with bronchitis from flying from Europe & sitting across from a family that was sick. Should they have been flying? NO! Do all 3 doctors believe I'm sick for the 3rd week because of the flight & who was on it? Yes.....
Was/is it my business they were sick? Yes......
