Ugh. Part of strep throat?

Thursday night my son woke up with a sore throat and fever. I took him to the doctor in the morning and he was diagnosed with strep throat. Everything else seemed fine, the doctor said. In fact, the doctor was surprised it was strep because he had no other symptoms and his throat didn't look that bad. By Saturday mid day he was feeling better and wanted to go trick or treating. Since he'd been on antibiotics for 24 hours, we decided to let him.

Early this morning he starts sounding stuffy and now has a fever again and says his ear really hurts, but his throat no longer does. He's also coughing.

Does this sound like part of strep or do you think he has something else going on? I'm going to call the doctor in the morning, but wanted to get some opinions.

I'm assuming the doctor did a rapid strep test???

The few times I've had true strep (not just tonsillitis) I did not develop cold type congestion and symptoms. Usually within 2 days of the antibiotics I was a whole new person. High fever, body aches, and the worst sore throat ever is usually what I've had w/ it. The last time I had actual strep was a few years ago though.

I've had strep more times than I care to remember and never experienced nasal congestion, earache, or cough. I did, however, have nausea and vomiting.

Hope your son feels better soon.

Yes, he did a rapid strep test.

I know. That's my experience with strep, too.

My son had strep throat in the spring and was really sick. Within one day of being diagnosed, it went into scarlet fever.

This time is different, but the test came back positive. He's on Amoxil.

maybe he has a couple things going on? I have never had those symptoms and neither have my kids with strep... I can't even tell my kids have strep..My one daughter complains of a stomach ache..no fever and ends up with strep. We have had many cultures that turned out to be a surprise because the throat didn't look to bad.

That's what I'm thinking. It must be a virus because he's on the antibiotics. I keep asking him if his body hurts (I'm just worried about the flu) and he tells me no, just his ear.

you know ..maybe he has some sinus issues on top of it? I get that all the time..and it bothers my ears..But if he has a sinus infection or ear infection the antibiotics should help that too...I sure hope he feels better! I am glad at least his throat feels better..

Well according to the Mayo Clinic site it could be a complication from untreated strep. Who knows? He is on the meds and I think I would do a followup appt. to be on the safe side once he is done with the meds.

Complications

By Mayo Clinic staff
Although strep throat itself isn't dangerous, it may lead to serious complications if left untreated. These complications include other infections, such as:
  • Tonsillitis or a collection of pus around the tonsils caused by infection (peritonsillar abscess)
  • Sinus infection (sinusitis)
  • Ear infection
  • Scarlet fever, an illness characterized by a rash
  • Inflammation of the kidney (poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis)
  • Rheumatic fever

It is also possible he picked up something else in the waiting room Friday. The timing is about right. I would call the nurse though just to be sure. Good luck, hope he feels better.
