Dang! I had my teeth cleaned last night and mentioned that I had two molars that were talking to me a little. The top one is a tooth with a deep amalgam filling that probably has a small crack in it. The lower one is already crowned. My dentist knows how phobic I am about dental work, so he said I could let it go unless it gets worse. I have to have nitrous to even clean my teeth, so the thought of having to get another crown and probably at least one root canal is pretty horrifying to me. Not to mention the cost~oy!

The dentist has suggested sedation other than nitrous. The last time I had a crown, he gave me shots into the nerves that run through the jaw, plus Xanax prior, and nitrous during. I *still* had trouble! I'm not sure exactly what sedation dentistry is. Do they start an IV? That would be AWESOME. I once had a doctor who tried to just get me through on Xanax alone. Holy cow! I came to halfway through the procedure and had a major panic attack, so bad that the dentist advised me to leave her practice. She told me I was the worst person in her practice. Apparently I was upsetting her staff too much.

You are not alone. I f you get sedation, you get put out by IV. The bad part is insurance will not cover it. But it is worth every penny. I do not know why dentistry work is done without sedation.. I suppose they need you awake so they can open your mouth wider.

I have my dental work done by sedation. It is expensive but there isn't really an alternative for me.

If I had it to do all over again, i would tell my Dentist Im scared to death of this stuff, so I could get the good drugs :lmao:

I canNOT do this without some sedation. I don't care how much it costs. If I could have both teeth done at the same time, WITH IV sedation, I will be a very happy camper.

The pediatric dentist that I used to take my kids to gave them Demerol before procedures along with the local anesthesia. When my DD was around 7 or 8 she was so difficult that the regular dentist refused to even clean her teeth and recommended the pediatric dentist.

My son, Christian, is severely developmentally disabled and getting his teeth clean is a real trick. Forget flossing, it's all we can do to brush his teeth. And going to the dentist--ugh. I can't do it at all. DH goes with him and at times they have to hold Christain down. Thank goodness, he has only ever had 2 cavaties.

We recently found a dentist in Atlanta who does both pediatrics and developmentally disabled persons. :thumbsup2 They are going to give him IV sedation and I think he will do much better.
