it's always something isn't it? :confused3

anwyay, it looks like we are going to have to replace our fridge sooner rather than later. The one we have came with the house and we bought about 8.5 years ago. it was probably 3-4 years before that.

i know NOTHING about fridges. can anyone recommend a good brand or what to look for?

thanks
Lara

What is it doing? I had to get mine fixed a few months ago, and it was a whole lot cheaper than buying a new one. If it's a simple fix, I would do that first.

I agree! My fridge is about the age of yours and a repairman replaced a part last week and told me it should be good to go for another 8-10 years. Total cost: $153. :)

How often do you vacuum underneath and behind it? The most common reason for a fridge to stop working is that the coils have lost their ventilation due to dust buildup, and thus overheat. If you unplug it, clean it up, let the motor cool down and then start it up again, it usually will restart just fine unless it was so hot that it completely burned out.

hmm..will try those things. We lost power yesterday for about 6 hours. it restarted fine but the compressor wasn't going on and it wasn't that cool in the fridge. we are going to see how it feels later tonight but didn't think about vacuuming behind it. we do under it every 3-6 months

If repairing is not an option. Consider looking on craigslist. Many people get rid of nice appliances because of remodels, etc.

We got a really good one for only about $400 at a Sears outlet. It's an off brand, but its great!

I too was going to rec. craigslist and Sears outlet. I recently sold my mom's fridge for $200 on craigslist. It was snapped up quickly. It was a bottom freezer, about 8 years old. Kenmore.

Good luck!

We bought a 1-year old $1700 refrigerator on Craigslist for $300. The couple had moved into a new house and wanted stainless steel appliances. This was black, which was perfect for us. I grabbed a friend, a pickup truck a dolly and a few straps. We've had it over a year now and it works great, even has an automatic ice maker.
