Uggh! Now I Remember Why I Don't Like PCs!

I was told that for this project I'd need to have a PC laptop, so I bit the bullet & got one. I had to wait an hour while the guy at CompUSA ran down to the warehouse to get it. It's a Toshiba somthin-nother & after all was said & done it cost about $3,000.

I get home & basically wanna veg for a bit (having been up since 6am). After getting a bite & all that, I decide to open it up. I go through the set up & get my desktop screen & all...with a ton of extra crap I don't want or need. But the laptop looks pretty slick & I like the look of it. Then I decide to pop in a DVD in the DVD-RW drive to watch a movie - no dice! :(

I figure that maybe the disc is dirty or something & try another one. Still didn't work. At this point I'm getting pretty aggrivated. I called tech support & after 30 minutes of "ok try this & reboot", the guy tells me that the drive is screwed up & it'll take 10 days to get a replacement. I told him this wasn't acceptable & that I'll be taking it back to the retailer. So tomorrow I have to go down & try to get it replaced. Joy.

If this is the sort of thing I'm going to have to look forward to life is gonna suck the next few months. :(

Sorry, dude.....:(

Toshiba's have went WAY down in quality in the last few years IMHO. Their warranty service has gotten pretty horrendous as you just experienced.
If you can bring it back and look at a different brand I would think about it!

My brother has a Toshiba and had some problems with it, he had it repaired.

Have you seen the new PowerBooks? If you haven't, here they are~

apple You can also see the new ads.;)

Dude, you shoulda bought a Dell!!:D
After the nighmare my father went through dealing with Dell they'll not see any of my money.

I was looking at a Vaio but the Toshiba had a 60GB as opposed to a 40GB hard drive & the Vaio was using a 32bit ATI card instead of a 64bit Invidia, plus it was $100 less. Because the project I'm going to be working on is graphics intensive & each module is going to be huge, I needed a lot of room & some serious firepower.

Trust me, if I could have bought an Apple (which is what I currently use) I would. In fact my dad just purchased a Powerbook (his first Apple) & he's in love with it.

The reason I didn't get an Apple was because it was heavily implied that they were looking for someone with a laptop & it had to be PC (I mentioned that I could work through Virtual PC, but they weren't receptive to that). Maybe I can get a Powerbook & put tape over the Apple logo & they'll never know. ;)

Jeff,
Did you get the Satellite 1955 S-803? Just wondered because I got the same one and had to return the first one also! The good news is that the replacement has worked without a hitch. And it can handle anything I've thrown at it so far, including a 90+ meg Powerpoint presentation. However, the first one gave me some grey hairs!

The model I got was the Satellite 5205-S703. Size was really important because some of the modules we'll be working on are about 10GB-15GB a piece.

Well, after havikng to drive to a store an hour away to get a replacement & spending a couple hours on the phone with tech support trying to get the wireless card working, I'm finally up & running.

I'm looking over at my father playing on his Apple Powerbook longingly like the guy watching his buddy dance with the prom queen & being stuck with her unattractive friend.

Oh well, hopefully this is this last problem I'll have. :)
