Uggggggg......POTUS 12/7

Thanks. I didn’t see the dinner part.
It will be an interesting last day for sure!!
We have been going back & forth whether or not to rent a car or just use Uber and I think this helped make our finial decision. The last thing I want to deal with at the end of vacation is wall to wall traffic on the way to the airport.
I’m glad I made the ME reservation.
I've been on the freeway when Bush's motor caid went by. The cops weaved back and forth to slow down traffic and then finally stopped it. The motorcade zoomed by and then we went on our merry way. We were delayed maybe 3 minutes. It's was certainly nothing like a traffic delay from an accident.

That is reassuring. Thanks!! I probably watched too much west wing back in the day but I had this picture in my head of traffic & mco halted for hours. We have the last flight out for the night.

Don’t be surprised if your bags are searched. I checked into a hotel the night before the Vice President was to visit and they searched every car thoroughly and x-rayed and hand searched luggage entering the hotel, including backpacks and handbags.

Just gonna post this as a reminder, from the DISboards Guidelines:

5. POLITICS/RELIGION
Because of the large number of complaints of personal attacks related to these subjects and inability for many people to keep a civilized conversation when discussing these hot-button topics, politics and religion will no longer be appropriate topics on our forums. Political or religion based posts or threads will be removed, and repeated violations of this rule can result in an infraction.

Some comments are getting a little close to the line. Let's keep the discussion focused on the logistics of how to get around WDW during a presidential visit, impacts on transportation, airport, and resort guests, past presidential visits, etc. Thanks.

Guests going home on the big day might want to or need to leave for the airport many hours in advance of their flights to avoid being caught in traffic or closures. This could mean cancellation of last day park and dining plans or maybe even cancelling the last night of the stay and going to an airport motel. Supposedly Magical Express will be giving advice when it gets close to the big day.

We were at MK when President Obama was visiting. We were staying at the Contemporary and had a PPO reservation at Crystal Palace and spent the entire day at MK afterward.
My biggest suggestions for everyone visiting that day, and the day before, would be to watch for communication from your resorts about park hours/events changes and try to be patient.

As a previous poster mentioned, when President Obama visited, they added tons of extra park hours to the other parks and added special entertainment and fireworks to try to draw people away from MK.

Also, don’t expect to get much of any info until the night before/morning of. They seemed to slow roll the info release, partially because the Presidential itinerary changes often, and keeping it secure until absolutely necessary helps with overall safety.

President Obama’s visit, and the resulting changes in security, access, and activities, did present some issues for our family’s plans. I will say that all of the cast members who were there were doing all they could to help make the best of things. They weren’t having a great day either. If everyone can be patient, and allow for extra time, you’re more likely to have a better experience.

The points below are specific to President Obama’s visit. Since the event President Trump is attending is at the GF, the may not be many changes in the parks. That said, if any of the first family is joining him, that might impact things.

We didn’t notice any transportation changes from the Contemporary to MK we took the monorail that morning to get to the MK for our ppo breakfast.

There was increased screening to get into the park...but back then there wasn’t as much security at the main gates.

We had more steps than was usual at the time, to get verified on the ppo reservation list to get into the park early, but it wasn’t a big hassle.

Because President Obama was making a speech from Main Street, they had done a heavy security sweep the night before on Main Street and that morning there was no traffic allowed to go down Main Street. The square was accessible as was city hall and the stroller rental location. They had massive walls up to divert traffic over to the side passage that they often use for party nights. Unlike party nights where they dump you out by Tomorrowland Terrace, they had an even more back path lined out that I think was actually a parking lot. They lined it with parade items to make a route, and it came out by the exit to Buzz.

That diversion was problem one for us... our kids were tiny and we didn’t have a stroller. It was fine on a normal park day (and we’re rope drop to fireworks people). But to start the day having the kids walk all the way around, through tomorrow land, through Fantasy land, past the HM and then down behind the castle, across the bridge, along the outer ring to get to the CP for breakfast was a trek. We stopped at city hall and shared our concern, and they gave us a voucher for a stroller.

So we get the stroller, do the trek, and get there..to find there is a huge line. Mrs. Obama and the girls were having breakfast at CP,and they weren’t done yet. Disney hadn’t canceled our ADR, or the ADRs of the other ppo breakfast guests, but they couldn’t let us inside until it was clear (I suspect that President Obama was their for breakfast too, but no one would confirm). So all these families, many with little kids are standing outside, and it’s January and freezing! We’re from Indiana, we’re used to cold, but it was unusually cold that morning. They had set up warm coffee, maybe even hot chocolate outside for us. Cast members were walking the line, checking on guests, and for those who were too cold, they actually walked over to nearby merch carts and pulled tags off blankets and other cold weather gear and gave them to guests. Yes we were freezing, and it totally was not how we wanted the day to start, but they were trying.

One other tip..if they do go to a park, and they drastically changed the traffic flow...guests will be more confused about where they’re going. Also areas of the park not built for the flow of entry traffic will be very congested.
Biggest scare of our day...our youngest DD was 3 that visit. We had ridden Buzz and the kids were looking around at the exit store. DD was right there with us, and she has never been a wanderer. The entrance traffic for all of MK had been diverted to that point, so the Buzz exit store was the first place after walking in from the makeshift path through the parking lot.

DH was talking to our older DD and DS was showing me something. DD3 was right next to me, and in a blink she was gone. Couldn’t have been more than 10 seconds since I had my eyes on her, but she was gone, and looking out the door, it was wall to wall people, moving at a constant flow.
Best we can figure, she followed some other mommy’s legs out the door...but the traffic was so heavy, in the 2 minutes she was gone, she’d traveled with the crowd almost to the bridge to Tomorrowland. It’s no one’s fault, and thankfully she was safe and found quickly...but totally the longest 2 minutes of my life.

Keep an extra eye on your group, and hold hands of younger kiddos, even for the kiddos you don’t normally need to.

Good luck to everyone visiting that week!

^This is definitely true. However I'm wondering if maybe MCO won't even be involved since he has two properties in FL, albeit not particularly close. Would a 3.5 hour motorcade be out of the question? or Maybe use Marine Force 1 from one of his properties? I don't know, just throwing out potential iterations. Maybe it's just because that is my travel day as well and I am being hopeful! Luckily I am flying to MCO late friday night, staying at the hyatt, and planning to ME it around 7 AM or so

We fly into MCO about 9:30 that morning and are taking the ME to GF...Hopefully we will get checked in and out to a park before it gets crazy! I called DVC members services yesterday to see if they knew if our check in would be impacted...the CM I spoke to had no idea of what I was talking about....she told me it was probably "fake news"!

Do online check-in through MyDisneyExperience, that way you don't have to actually "check-in"...drop any carry-on luggage with bell services and head to a park. You should get a text when your room is ready.

Various presidents roll into my town often enough. They close streets down entirely for the motorcade. Add in the protestors & those who hope to lookiesee and it’s a real mess

You should be fine with that plan. The logistics of the presidential travel is likely considered classified information

12/7 was supposed to be our travel day home, via MCO in the early evening

I’ve lopped a day off upcoming trip and will be departing 12/6. If the new Star Wars offering is up & running on 12/5, it’ll be enough of a cluster of bodies/traffic without factoring in the presidential visit for that large fundraiser.

Thank you to the Dis boards for alerting me to this news. While I already had my trip totally planned out, I lucked out that this was mostly going to be an Animal Kingdom day for me, except I had a breakfast scheduled at the Wave at the Contemporary. I quickly changed that to Boma. I don't want to be anywhere near the monorail resorts on that day because there is just no way to know what kind of inconvenience the president's visit is going to cause. Better to be safe than sorry.

This is exciting! I may just have to drive down to hopefully get to see him, even from a far, the 7 hour drive will be worth it!
They will probably bring the President into the event via a service entrance rather than the main doors. I know that this what what they did when President Bush visited the Union League Club in Chicago. It is safer that way.

Since MCO is such a busy airport, maybe he will fly into Sanford??? (Hope I am not mixing that up with the autotrain). Just wondering if he might fly into a less congested airport close by.

AF1 typically goes to military airbase nearby when available. Patrick AFB and helicopter into GF direct.

Anywhere he flies will affect air traffic within 100 miles. Holds on takeoffs and landings so all those planes aren't in the air anywhere near AF1, holding patterns for incoming flights, likely out over the gulf or Atlantic.

I doubt it. I think Air Force One will land at MCO, police convoy motorcade to the GF, and then back to the airport.

There's already been a rally in Orlando, so the local officials probably already have a pretty good plan for what they’re going to do. And, obviously the Secret Service does too. There will be some flight rearrangements at the airport, and perhaps some short police traffic stoppage as the motorcade passes.

I know people are concerned about how this will affect their plans, but at this point, there is only a dinner. There will be extra security at the GF, especially getting in and out of the convention center. if I wasn’t staying at the GF, I probably wouldn’t plan to have dinner there that evening. But otherwise, I think things will function pretty normally. Now, if a visit to any of the parks or an overnight stay becomes part of the plan, all bets are off.

AF1 goes where it wants. The disruption in time on flights in corridors are quite minimal.

AF1 routinely comes to san diego for fundraisers. It lands at Miramar and flies right over our office during takeoff since miramar in our flightpath. The wild thing is no planes turn after take off and go straight to see along the freeway westward then moves out. --- Not AF1. it takes a quick 120 degree turn right over our office to pivot back home to DC -- it's low and amazingly quiet (just several hundred fee off the ground).

AF1 goes where it wants.

Absolutely. However, Patrick AFB is just not typically used when Air Force One comes to central Florida. Thinking about the locations makes me wonder if Miramar is seen as a more secure location since it’s not right on the water, like SAN. Patrick actually sits on a barrier island with accessible waterways on both sides. MCO may be more secure due to this.
