Anyone know if during the day in Florence on the Viva Italia trip, we visit the Uffizi Museum? Or do you have time to do it during the "on your own" time in the afternoon?

I do not believe it is part of the tour. The Uffizi is very close to where David lives but I think the tour only goes to see David. If you decide to do Uffizi on your own time in one afternoon, you should call ahead for tickets. The ticket line is always very long and you will waste half the afternoon just waiting to get tickets. If you call ahead, you pick up at something like a will-call across the plaza from the museum entrance.

The tickets are stamped with an entrance time in order to control the number of people flowing through the rooms (similar to the fastpass system). So it is most definitely worth calling ahead to reserve those tickets.

We went July 2007. First we saw David and a bit of the other art at the Academy-took about an hour. Then we had a one hour walking tour of Florence with the local guide. After that, we had about 3.5 hours on our own, and this included lunch. Several folks skipped the walking tour to visit a specific sight or to do more serious shopping, but I don't remember if the Uffizi was one of them. The day in Florence is really short so you will have to decide what is most important to you, and definitely get the tickets in advance.

The Uffizi is not part of the tour. And definitely purchase your tickets in advance. The entry lines are very long, and your time is limited.

Thanks for the info. We're doing Viva Italia 7/27 (all by ourselves, it seems :) ). Is there an itinerary we'll get in advance that will help us determine when/whether we can fit a visit to the museum into our plans? How much in advance do you need to purchase the tickets?

The day you go to Florence, you will first make a visit to see David. After that, you will be given the option of staying with the group or going off on your own. This will be the time to go to the Uffizi. Just purchase your tickets ahead (I think you can do so online or ask your contact at ABD) and then show up at Will Call to pick them up.
