Thinking about using UberX from MCO to Disney resort (WL) instead of Magical Express

If we are 2 adults and a child with 3 carry on sized suitcases and 3 backpacks will an UberX be big enough? I figure that we can put a suitcase on one of the seats and then 2 in the trunk. Does that make sense?

If we arrive at 9:30am on a Sunday (pro bowl day) will it be surge pricing? How much will it likely cost? About $35?

Trying to figure out how much it would cost. If it's too much then will likely just use magical express

If we take magical express how long will it usually take on a Sunday morning?

thanks!

You should be fine with Uber X. The question mark would be the age of the child, and whether you have your own car seat. If you need a car seat, Uber has vehicles with car seats, but availability might be limited and the price would be a little higher.

According to Ride Guru, an X ride should be about $26. I would not expect surge pricing at 9:30 AM. IF you need an XL, the price would be about $43, but I don't think you'll need XL.

https://ride.guru will give you approximate prices.

UberX cars are basically sedans. If your luggage fits into a sedan at home, it'll fit in your Uber. I personally would NOT put luggage on the seat, as it's someone's personal car and I want to respect their space. Luggage could mark up or tear the seat.

Good point, especially if the car has leather interior. If you want to put luggage on the seat, be sure to ask the driver first. I personally do not allow luggage on my seats because of the risk of damage.

My son is 6 and large for his age so I don't think that he will need a car seat. I think the age for carseats is 5 and under in Orlando?

Good point :) I will work it out with the driver so that he or she is comfortable with where to put the luggage.

SMALL sedans. Some barely fit 5 passengers.

Personally, having 3 riders, I would go with an XL. Many small cars have a split fold-down back seat, but some might not allow access to 2 seat belts with half of the seat folded. Another possibility might be to push the passenger seat all the way back, put a bag on the floor of the front passenger area, and squeeze all the riders into the back seat. If the car you get doesn't work out, expect to be charged a $5 cancellation fee.

FL law does not require a booster for a 6yo. If the rear seat is half folded down, I'd suggest putting the child on the outside so that the adult can keep a hand on the luggage.

I do the same with the three of us, but DW carries a suitcase the size of a small motor home, so we need the extra room!

OP, there is no telling what kind of vehicle you will get ordering X. You could get a small car, or an SUV. Most SUV drivers accept X rides at airports. Whatever you get, it will have to carry a driver + 4 passengers with seatbelts for all.

As soon as your ride is accepted, you will be able to see what kind of car is en route on your app. If the car type is sufficient, obviously no problem.

If it's something like a Prius or other very small car, you can cancel immediately without a cancellation fee. The key is to cancel immediately. The cancellation fee would be charged only if you wait two minutes before canceling. Canceling the ride will NOT hurt the driver who accepted your ride; they will remain at the top of the queue and will get the next ride.

Then wait a minute or two and request again.

We used an UBER XL within Disney property two times when we changed resorts. We had two adults and teenager, 5 suitcases and three backpacks. Once it was an SUV crossover type vehicle, and once it was a mini van. The luggage fit in the back with no issue.

Is there a reason you're considering doing something that will cost you money versus something that's free?

Figure on Magical Express taking 90 minutes from the time you deplane till the time you get to your resort.

Because she values her time on vacation. Magical Express is slow, clunky and inefficient. Uber is quick, easy and streamlined. I understand and respect that everybody travels with a different budget, and in some circumstances, spending $30 on an Uber ride from the airport isn't workable. In that case, Magical Express is a wonderful option.

But if the cost isn't prohibitive, I simply can't justify wasting the time Disney's option requires.

But you have to wait for your luggage if you do Uber, and it's not like Uber drivers are parked at the airport waiting for you to call - I would imagine then that taking Uber would probably only save you 30-45 minutes versus ME, and to me that little time savings wouldn't be worth it. Don't get me wrong though, I understand wanting to spend as much time in the parks as possible, so for instance, I don't understand people who take early morning flights but then don't go into the parks at all on their first day. I take early morning flights to maximize park time!

OP said they will have carry-on bags. People do stuff differently. No big deal.

We use Uber a lot all over the East coast and both the above are absolutely true. Personally, I will not use Uber X, the cars can be very small and often in poor condition.

In major metro and tourist areas, XL and Blacks are very often professional car service drivers picking up fares between scheduled runs.

The cars can range from very small to very large, especially at airports. I drive a Buick Enclave SUV, but most of my rides are X rides.
...and often in poor condition.
There is absolutely NO excuse for any rideshare car being in "poor condition." If you encounter any car, any class of service, in poor condition, you will do everyone a favor by reporting that to Uber or Lyft.

Also, I don't believe they have Uber Black in the Orlando market (we don't have it in the Miami market). They do have XL and Select, but I don't think they have Lux/Lux SUV or Black.

Um...actually, they are parked at the airport waiting for you to call.

Really? I thought only cabs were allowed to do that. I just assumed that Lyft and Uber drivers were coming from their homes.

Is this the case with both companies? I've had a couple of Lyfts where it was really awkward for me to get in - short, mobility device; one minivan, one pickup.

There are as many as a hundred or so (!) Ubers waiting at the airport, but they're in a lot at the corner of the airport. It should take about 5-10 minutes for one to get to the terminal. During busiest times, Uber may have empty cars driving back and forth between the remote lot and the terminal to reduce the wait time.

And Uber & Lyft drivers rarely come from their homes, They're usually hanging out someplace where there tend to be a lot of requests nearby. If they returned home after every drop-off, none of them would ever make any money.

Yes, you can cancel either company, but do it early so a) you don't get charged a cancellation fee, and b) you don't inconvenience the driver. As soon as you see a vehicle you will have difficulty boarding, cancel immediately.

I'm very familiar with the mobility issue because I drive an SUV and Grandma has severe mobility issues and can't get in my car without a stepstool and significant help. A pickup would certainly be difficult getting into, and any pickup which can seat a driver and four riders does qualify for both Uber and Lyft.

If I had a rider who was going to need assistance getting in my vehicle, I would ask them to cancel the ride -- too much risk of injury for them, and liability for me...not a good mix. Safety far outweighs all other considerations in any ride, and neither the company, the driver, nor you want any situation where anyone's safety is compromised.
