we will be at wdw in just a few day and I am wondering if I would be better to use the taxis at at the resorts or should I try uber. I have never used uber before but I heard it actually is cheaper then a taxi. I will be going from resort to resort a few times. Normally I take the buses but not sure with the schedule I have if I will have enough time to do the buses or not to get to where I need to go. Also how long will it take to get an uber ride? Is it something I book in advance or not?

We used both Uber and Lyft for the first time at WDW in June. We felt the vehicles were cleaner than the taxis. Also, the longest we waited after using the apps to call for a car was 5 minutes. Hope that helps.

Uber is on demand, not in advance. You request the ride thru the app on your Android or iPhone.

The app will tell you the estimated arrival time, before and after you request a ride. It will show you the driver's progress toward your location on a map.

It's not as immediate as a taxi waiting in the resort parking lot. Typically, you'll wait 5-15 minutes. At busy times (park closing) or off-hours (late night), it could be as long as 30 minutes, but the app will always show you before you request the ride.

UberX for up to 4 riders usually costs 1/3-1/2 the taxi fare -- except very short trips, as there's a $5.50 minimum. UberXL for up to 6 riders (or 4 riders with lots of luggage) typically is about 80% higher than UberX.

If you've never used it before, any Uber driver or rider can give you a referral code for a discount on your first ride. If you sign up for Lyft, they may give you a credit that automatically discounts several of your first rides.

Sorry if this sounds paranoid (but, in truth, I'm a scardy cat), but I will be traveling alone in late August. I need to get from the Kissimmee Amtrak station to Pop Century. It seems Uber is considerably cheaper than a car service. Does anyone know how safe über is considered? I hate being in a car alone with a stranger.

We've used Uber A LOT! at Disney. While I have never been alone on our trips I would have never hesitated to get in a car with any of our drivers alone. They were absolutely wonderful. If I ever do find myself alone at Disney I would use Uber or Lyft without question.

We used Uber for a ride from Kissimmee to SSR. We waited about 4 minutes for the car to show up, was a VW Jetta with a spotless interior. The ride took about 25 minutes and the fare for the three of us was $13. I hate to think what a taxi would have cost.

I personally feel safer in uber than I do in taxis at this point. Uber has a feature where you can share your ride details with someone via mobile phone and that person can actually track your ride in real time and has access to the drivers license plate number. I use that feature when traveling alone late at night in other cities and let my husband follow along.

How do you use this? There was no option to set this up on my Uber app a couple weeks ago when I used it for the first time on WDW property...

Once your ride starts, there will be a link on the screen under the drivers face that says something like "send status to contacts" or "share ETA" can't remember the exact language. Click on that and then add the phone number you want to share with (I believe you can also preset a list of go to contacts but I haven't bothered with that). Then hit send. The sharee will get a text that says something like Bob wants to share his trip with you and a link. That link will open up the tracking map and they can watch your car travel along.

This is my very low tech explanation.

Thank you! I did some digging and found you can set up a "family profile" as well on the app, so that I could share my rides with my husband, every time, automatically. But this is good information in case I want to share the ride with someone else.

I've used Uber quite a bit. I travel for work frequently, usually alone and I'm a female as well. Never had a bad experience or felt unsafe with Uber. No different than a taxi for me. In fact, the Uber app tracks both yours and the drivers location via GPS so it would be easy to trace if they went off course or something went awry. You'll also receive the driver's name, make & model, license plate number, and customer star rating before they arrive. Uber drivers must maintain a certain star rating or else they are prohibited from accepting new fares until they complete additional training.
