And back when it started the companies took less of a bite out of what the driver got. But they keep finding ways to increase their profit at the expense of the drivers take.
That is sad because lyft is my ticket to indapendce
My understanding was that you included the tip at the time you ordered the ride, so there was no tip at the end-just get to your location and get out of the car. Is that how it works? Or is a tip when you reach your destination a good idea? I admit I haven't used either yet-planning on using one of them to get from my hotel back to the airport at the end of my next trip.

Not where I live the option to tip is at the end of the ride when you rate your driver

There is no automatic tip in the app, you need to either add it in the app at the end of the ride or give the driver cash.

Per the "Everything you wanted to know..." thread, please try to have cash for the tip. This way, the driver has the tip immediately and knows you tipped. More importantly, they get the entire tip along with full pay for the ride.

Do they accept cash? I thought tipping was done in the app

I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but part of what made ride share services popular was the original promotional aspect of an all-digital, cashless experience. I rarely carry cash, so that made ride shares appealing to me. If the prototype is changing to a cash-based system, it makes the concept much less viable for my usage. I'm completely cool with tipping through the app, but if cash is now expected, I'm looking for an alternative.

Why does it matter if the driver knows you tip? Is that so that he gives you a better rating? If that’s the case, how dumb a system.

I always tip through the Lyft app, and I occasionally get promo codes due to my "5 star rating." I always thought the ratings were based on the actual transportation experience. Are you ready when the driver shows up? Are you polite? Do you say thank you? I guess I never thought about trying to bribe a driver by handing out cash before the rating system kicked in. Maybe I've misunderstood the underlying ride share/rating concept? I've been using ride shares for years now, but this particular concept is new to me.

I could be wrong, but why else would you make a point to make sure the driver knows you tip. Sounds more like a bribe for a good rating. We don’t have Uber or Lyft but we have something similar and there is no rating on either end at all. I much prefer that.

Yeah, and if someone was an obnoxious guest and then threw out a cash tip hoping that would make their rating better, I'm guessing they could end up being disappointed. The driver could still rate them low. They've already got the cash. Why not be truthful? I feel like I'm missing something ...

Although I agree there’s no other reason for making sure the driver knows you tipped, I have never given a cash tip and I have a 5 star rating on Lyft and just shy of that on Uber so it has not made a difference for me. I like the ratings because low rated drivers are removed from the platform.

Yup. Things change.
I rarely carry cash, so that made ride shares appealing to me.
That's fine. I said "try".

Look, everyone. I paraphrased information from the "Eveything...About Über/Lyft thread. I do not and never did drive for either company. It is not my suggestion or request. If you want more specifics on why try to tip cash, please go read that thread. Don't jump down my throat.

sorry for jumping down your throat but I am cashless and I hardly ever know in advance when I am taking lyft

-Use whichever service your prefer.
-Tipping through the app is absolutely fine.

Yeah...nope. I don't carry cash and take Uber or Lyft unexpectedly sometimes. The whole point of the app is that it's cashless. I'm annoyed enough that I had to start tipping when the original point was that it was all one price. I'm not going to start carrying cash just in case.

Exactly.
