UBER! Use it! You'll love it!

I think the incidents occurred when it was after a large convention and there were many people waiting for many Ubers.
Uber doesn't do back ground checks and the one person who got driven and dropped off elsewhere filed a report to Uber and got no response. They went to the media and when the story aired there was still no response from Uber. Haven't seen anything about it since and it was about a month ago.

At least in Disney, the Mears taxi cars are marked and the drivers are Mear's employees.

Uber doesn't do back ground checks
This is just wrong and untrue...a myth spread by taxi drives to scare people off from Uber's superior service at a lower price. See here:
All Uber ridesharing and livery partners must go through a rigorous background check that leads the industry. The three-step screening we’ve developed across the United States, which includes county, federal and multi-state checks, has set a new standard. These checks go back 7 years, the maximum allowable by California law. We apply this comprehensive and new industry standard consistently across all Uber products, including uberX.

Screening for safe drivers is just the beginning of our safety efforts. Our process includes prospective and regular checks of drivers’ motor vehicle records to ensure ongoing safe driving. Unlike the taxi industry, our background checking process and standards are consistent across the United States and often more rigorous than what is required to become a taxi driver.
I think the incidents occurred when it was after a large convention and there were many people waiting for many Ubers.
Is this the story? If so, its what I described above: a case of a criminal impersonating an Uber driver. The woman got into a car that was not sent by Uber. She says herself that it was her first time using it and 'she should have paid more attention to the alerts sent by Uber'. Meaning she got into the car of a criminal impersonating an Uber driver. If she'd looked at the picture and license plate number, and if the driver had asked for her by name, she wouldn't have been the victim.

You say there's been a number of incidents. The story was from late July and didn't mention others. Can you point me to the other stories?

Passengers getting into the "wrong" car may not be common but it happens.

Taxis are clearly marked. Taxi drivers going through background checks, sometimes official. Taxis vehicles are subject to inspection requirements.

Some municipalities are requiring the same from Uber. We have no idea as to how effective the private security check performed by Uber is.

Just a word of caution. There have been quite a few incidents here in Atlanta where people have claimed to be Uber drivers, picked people up and driven them to "not so nice" neighborhoods, demanded more money and then dropped them off at another location. Uber drivers don't have "Uber IDs" and don't drive marked cars, soooo be careful...

I think you are more likely to run into that problem when hailing a cab. At least with Uber you know what you are getting by the driver's reviews. You have little or no information when hailing a cab.

Well, excuse me for mentioning that I saw a story on the news about Uber and advising people to be careful.
It's amazing how quickly people on this site are quick to bash others.
Fine, don't take my advice and I guess my opinion and memory is WRONG and I never saw a news story. SHEESH! Hope you Uber lovers are happy NOW!

I guess I imagined these stories.

Please don't get mad at us for your over-generalization and misrepresentation of facts.

In both of these posts, you used a plural to describe mutiple incidents *in Atlanta*. I did some research and could find only one incident in Atlanta. The other incident you cited in your last post was not in Atlanta.

That's what needed clarification....its quite understandable to mis-remember something, but you came back with specifics to support a claim that there were *mutiple incidents* in Atlanta, when in fact there weren't others in Atlanta.
To save time for others, the first story was actually here where I live (Washington DC) and was in the news when it happened. An Uber driver has some sort of interaction with a DC government taxi inspector, and sped away to try to evade this inspector. An Uber passenger was in the car when the driver began the evasion. The Uber driver was not attempting to rob the passenger, just avoid the DC taxi official (Uber can't be hailed from on the street in DC, or anywhere really).

The second link seems to be a different station’s story about the same incident I liked to in a previous post:

We just got Lyft here in Memphis and I've been dying to try it, mostly to avoid having to find parking down on Beale Street on a weekend and the added bonus of having a DD. Plus, the video of Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, and Conan O'Brien using a Lyft car cracks me up, and the little pink mustaches are cute. ;)

Watch and laugh... You are welcome! http://youtu.be/VNM7Z7hir_I

Once Again.. I am SOOOOO sorry I overgeneralized and misrepresented the facts and are SOOOOO wrong.
I am not entitled to my own opinion and views.

I am just an idiot from ATL and you see a lot more Atlanta news TV than me.

As someone on the fence about using Uber this weekend at USO, I appreciate your post. I prompted me to do more research before making my decision to use Uber or not. It is always better to go in with eyes wide open.

So there are more stories of Uber drivers robbing passengers in Atlanta? ETA: or anywhere?
I am not entitled to my own opinion and views.
You weren't expressing an opinion or view. You were citing historical incidents that never happened.

At least I helped someone out and that makes me feel good.

Hope you have enjoyed calling someone a LIAR and I hope you have a great DAY!

The only research that will give you an accurate determination on the quality of the Uber service is by personally using it. Most of the news articles I have read are complete garbage and it is obvious that the reporter has a pro or anti Uber bias. The first hand accounts I have heard are generally positive but I think that is more a reflection on the very poor quality of traditional taxi services.

Come on now.....settle down. Everyone is welcome to offer info here. On the other hand, everyone is also welcome to ask about particulars in a post! Try to be nice.

Uber, Lyft drivers face $250 fine at OIA

Citing a concern for your security, airport officials have posted signs warning that ride-sharing services are not considered as safe as taxis, limos and shuttles that are driven by people who have background checks, photo identification and permits to be on airport property.

The airport board approved $250 fines for ride-share drivers.

The City of Orlando has been issuing $210 fines for ride-share drivers who have no driver and no vehicle permits. The Orlando City Council will debate changes to its vehicle for hire ordinance at a workshop on Sept. 8.

I suspect it has more to do with money than safety. I would guess the safety issue is just a red herring.

Mears may be the 2nd most politically powerful company in Orlando, after only Disney.

I'm not saying they don't provide a good and worthwhile service, but they have a rep for getting what they want, and for not being particularly thoughtful of their drivers.
