I don't think anything like that could happen that soon and I doubt it would happen because of anything Obama does.

However, I do think we're on the brink of some serious events that could lead to instability and make us vulnerable to major changes. We could eventually see another civil war and that could open the door to foreign involvement and eventual control. How soon? My guess is withing the next twenty years.

People worried about becoming Canadian. First don't knock it until you try it. Second they won't likely want you (you in a general sense, not picking on anyone) anyway. If anything it would be Alaska.

I once read an article about how a democracy can not be sustained for more than 250 years due to greedy politicians. Everyone has their hand in the pot. I'm beginning to see the author's point!

I don't take it to mean greedy politicians - I take it to mean the people, the voters who cause the collapse of a democracy by wanting stuff.

I read another article about this prediction and apparently he has been making the prediction since the late 1990s or early 2000s. It has nothing to do with Obama. I think it is getting airtime because of our current fiscal issues.

The whole thing is nonsense. These is no way we will be split like that in 18 months. For all our in-fighting, Americans would band together and put up one **** of a fight before we gave any part of us away, especially to Russia or China!

Splitting into parts? No. But I can see us becoming the United States of China when I think about all the money we borrow from them and the fact that we can't seem to quit spending.

Then again maybe we could split up into parts. China could always auction off pieces of the US to the highest bidders..........

I definitely think that years down the road we will have the threat of a split. Your scenario seems like a good possibility. But as far as this prediction that next year Californians will be learning Mandarin is ridiculous.

Was there ever an explanation on how these other countries received ownership of the respective states? I understand the China one (they probably could purchase a few states with all of our paper they own), but Mexico? The Mexican Army (is there even such a thing)? Makes no sense.

Well I'm a Native New Yorker and we already like to think we're a country unto ourselves so I really can't see getting absorbed into some other country. We're really not the "absorbing" type of people.
