U.S PAYG Phones

Can anyone help, my DH has asked me to put this post on!
Has anyone got any experience of buying US pay as you go phones with PTT(Push To Talk) as an alternative to buying walkie talkies for short distance and using our UK mobile phones for long distance, as next yrs holiday we will be going to differnet sites to the rest of our party?

We went for the normal PAYG phones, as If I recall correctly, there was only one service provider with the push to talk system and the coverage was poor., But things may have well changed in 12 months...

Our phones are unlocked so I just bought a couple of T-Mobile PAYG sims off ebay about a month before we went. The minutes expire quite soon after so you have to make sure you don't buy them too far in advance if doing it this way.
