It's a freebie! I did it several years ago and I rememeber it as being pretty good fun. You get a wet suit jacket, mask and snorkel. They usher you along from one side to the other in a direct line and you have to keep moving right along.
You can also go into the "ship" that sits alongside the reef and view the scene from there and watch your family members take their turns, if you aren't inclined to get into the water.
One thing I remember is that the water is COLD!!!
Have fun!
*edited to add that admission to Typhoon Lagoon is required, so in that sense it isn't a 'freebie'!!*
Thanks so much for your quick reply!! he will be a bit disappointed I think cuz he can't "free" swim but I think it will do. We are spending some time with friends before WDW and he will be on a deep sea fishing so hopefully that will be enough lol thanks again!!
We did it again on our last trip, we lingered, zig-zagged and took our time getting across, the life guards didn't seem to mind, of course they were busy yelling at the people standing on the rock they just told them they couldn't stand on, only sit They also had to rescue a lady whose child freaked out, then she freaked out, I guess neither could swim :/ It's fun, if we hit TL when we go back, we'll do it again
We did it while we were there last week. It is included in the park's admission. We didn't have to wear any wet suit jackets, just the snorkel mask. I didn't find the water to be that cold at all, just very salty! My husband said it is high salt content so people could float better?!
We did this multiple times on our last trip March. My son is one of those that freaked out 1/2 way through. He's a strong swimmer, but he didn't care for the snorkle concept. He said he kept feeling like he couldn't breathe. No rescue needed though, we just had to hurry up. The nice thing was, the day we were there it was really empty in the park. At one point there was only 2 other people in the shark reef w/ us. The CM's let us sit for awhile on the stairs and the sting rays kept swimming up and right around us. I got great pictures of that.

Well we are going at the end of June so I hope it wont be too crowded but I won't plan on it lol How long do u usually get to stay in there? I told him it was kinda a guided tour thing and he kinda poopoo'd the idea then lol but he will do it just to get the chance to say he swam with sharks lol
We swam slow, probably 7-10 mins. Last August when we went Blizzard Beach stopped taking in guests early, I understand it happens often, and on the way to Typhoon Lagoon, they said it was closed as well, but the driver told us to tell them it happened on the way there and they should let us in. We got in with no problem, and it was crowded, but we still had a good time.
