So I am really not sure if this is where I should post this...but here goes with a little background on me...

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in July of this past year. Had an A1C of 8 and was placed on Janumet twice a day. I have since gotten my A1C down to 5.7 by diet and exercise. My doctor has knocked me down to one Janumet a day....and we are hoping I stay in this range to come off the medicine completely.

My question is do they have whole wheat options at the qs locations? Maybe even lavash wraps?
I know I will be walking a ton and will be able to splurge here and there, but I really like to keep it as healthy as I can if possible.

Also does anyone know about bar options? Do they have sugar free mixes for drinks or do they list the amount of carbs in drinks??

Thanks in advance!!

Congrats on getting your A1C down!

WDW does not provide carb counts. You can use an app or hard-copy such as Calorie King to estimate most foods.

QS is more limited in substitutions they can do, and much depends on how much the item is pre-prepared. They may be able to substitute a bread choice, but may not. I suggest checking out the menus for the QS (and even TS) locations of interest to see what they even have on-hand (if it isn't on the menu for another item, it likely won't even be in the kitchen). Then you can ask about a substitution when you are there, but be prepared if told no. (There's a recent thread about BOG lunch unable to accommodate substitutions and it's because most items arrive at the restaurant already made.)

Alcohol sugars will cause more issues than the mixers, unless you are interested in virgin drinks. There may be diet sodas available as mixers, but I wouldn't expect juices to be sugar free.

Enjoy your vacation!

AS fair as whole grain bread I am not sure if they have it you can bring your own

congratulation on getting your A1C down

a few things about Disney they do not do carb count so if you want to know the carb counts of food a good app to have is colarie king and/or WAG ( wild A_ _ guess) yes you will be doing a lot of walking which can cause lows so bing something for lows.

I have not seen whole grain bread but for QS you can bring your own ( I bring all may meals somedays and no one has ever stoped me and I have seen a number of guess doing the same thing) or for a few things just take the bread off and use a fork and knife to eat it ( if you do not have bread or lattice )

look at the menu on line before had can help you know what will be your best bet for food rather when you are there and hungry

also bring extra surprise with you like test strips if you are in the state Walmart has a cheep meter ( $10-15) and strips ( 50 for either $10-15) so if your insercerince will only give you one or two per day I would strongly suggest getting some and testing more at Disney)

have a great trip

My doctor recommended I cut alcohol entirely when I was diagnosed with Type 2.

Oh really....thats stinky. My diabetes nutritionist said I could definitely have wine just to add some seltzer water to it and make it a spritzer. As for alcohol she just told me to be careful of what was mixed in with the alcohol. Alcohol will usually lower your number, but all the juices and mixes added can wreck havoc with your BS. Also if you are drinking alcohol to have a meal or snack along with it.
I have found wine and alcohol lower my numbers considerably, but I haven't had a drink like a Disney drink since I was diagnosed :)

for the most part alcohal will lower BG if you drink with dinner the lower BG could be around 3 AM ( or so) your liver will process the alcohol now your liver will also give you glocose if you go low too, but remember your live can only do one thing ( it is lazy) so if it has to filter out the alcohol and you go low then it can not give you extra glucose ( this is why glocgon will not work) it is best to limit acohal and have a good snack with your drink of chose but always listen to your DR /CDE as they know what is best for you.

This is similar to what my Dr. told me. He said that my body doesn't require alcohol, and it taxes the liver at times when it's needed to manage my blood sugar, so I'd be better off not drinking.

I suggest reading the side effects of Janumet (metformin plus Januvia) before drinking alcohol.

I have and have also talked with my doctor and nutritionist also. They have told me a glass of wine or an occasional drink are totally fine. I have tested, tested, and tested some more my BS after eating and a drink so I know where I am. I have also gotten up in the middle of the night and tested to see how each would affect me.
Most of the side affects indicated are if you have additional problems with your liver or kidneys, which I do not.

This advice may apply to you but not others, so it's best not to let others on these medications think that it's okay to drink alcohol while taking these strong medications.

I think it is up to every one to drink responsibly and if they are on any kind of medicine ( even if it is for a day) to ask there dr if it is ok to drink and if so how much and if they need to do somethings ( like only have one class of win/beer no hard lquar or to have a meal with it) after all ( at lest in the US) if you can drink you are an adult and should be able to make your own choses

TTC516 I think it is good that you are testing to see what different things ( alcohol ) dose for you. I find testing the best thing you can do.

I never said I was a doctor or am here to give advice to any one. As anyone with Type 2 knows what's good for one may not be for another. Some people can't eat potatoes, others can. Some can eat bread, while others sky rocket out of range. Each individual should know what is good or not good for them. If they don't then I do strongly suggest talking with there doctor or a nutritionist. I'm sorry if I misled anyone that honestly was not my intention.

Whoa, seriously?

Booze sends DH sky high. Not as bad as HFCS (or anything corn syrup based), but close. With any of those he soars to the moon, gets MEAN, then crashes hard.

Good luck in getting off the drugs. DH hated metformin so bad, and his blood sugars were already going down well before the metformin could have kicked in, that he was off it in 2 weeks. Solely diet and exercise. He read a trade magazine article at his endocrinologist's (not sure why it was out for patients) that said the research shows that most people with type 2 CAN do it with diet and exercise, but MOST people will not even try. So to prescribe from the beginning, since most people won't even try it. You're doing great.

I never said I was a doctor or am here to give advice to any one.

I think Sadie is just trying to be careful. Whenever we put OUR experiences, someone skimming could decide it is truth for all. I think Sadie was just explaining why she was saying what she had said.

This just goes to show that everyone is SOOO different!!

My best advice for anyone is to Test, Test & Test some more to find what does and doesn't work for them!
