Two WDW Half Marathons in 2011?

I was listening to the WDW Today podcast this morning and Mike Scopa said something about there possibly being two half marathons in 2011?!? Friday a half, Saturday the second half and Sunday the full. Has anyone heard anything about this?!?

I filled out a survey a couple of weeks ago -- I guess it went to a sample of WDW marathon participants (at the time, I figured all 2009 participants were getting it). Some of the questions were clearly related to perceived crowding on the course, and one specifically asked what you would do if there were two half marathons offered. The choices were something like 1) Do the Friday race 2) Do the Saturday race 3) Do both races 4) Do neither race.

In the comment section, I indicated that I strongly preferred having one 1/2 and keeping on Saturday. JMO. I like the crowds and really like having thousands of people behind me.

sounds like a GREAT idea! I was reading just today on a website that there were crowding issues and as it gets more popular, I would think spreading out the crowd would be a good idea!

But we would have to get together with our DIS friends and make sure we signed up for the same 1/2!! Or cheer each other on separately!

Where did you get that podcast? Is it free? I just got an iPhone and would love to listen to more Disney info!!!!

Shouldn't they take the economy into consideration? There may not be as many people next year anyway.

Hey Shan...I read about this over on the disneyrunning boards. Some marathoners got a survey, I did not, and this was of much discussion. There is alot more money to be made from a 1/2 than a 5K and there are alot more participants. But, like others have said, with the economy, things are not filling as fast as last year. Guess we'll have to wait and see what they decide for 2011!

Yeah, still not sure of two halfs and then a full. WOuld have to try to get all the racing team members signed up for a certain race on a certain day. Also, what would become of the Goofy. Not sure it would mean the same if you did the half on Friday and then the full on Sunday in instead of back to back. How would that work?
I like having a 5K,Half and then Full. Gives those doing the 5K a taste of what the big race weekend is about and hopefully the urge to sign up for the Half or Full the next year.

I took the survey from Disney and said I would want the 1/2's on Fri & Sat. I would do the 1/2 Fri. 1/2 Sta, and Full on Sun. More miles and more fun.

The forum on my website was interested in doing the 3. A real Dopey challenge that is timed and recorded!

I like the idea, but I hope that they still keep the 5K.
If they where to offically have a race for the 2 1/2 and full can you imagine the price?? I would think about $500??????

No, it is later than last year as Disney offered a $15 discount before 3/1. The 1/2 filled by 3/5 last year and won't fill that early this year.

I don’t think it matters if you do the half on Friday or Saturday and then the full Sunday. That is still impressive. The only caveat I can think of is that the crowding issue won’t be fixed if they add the new race and then double the registration allowance. You would still have just as many people running each day as they do now.

I do hope if they add a Friday race they change the course. Maybe do the Epcot to MK to Epcot on Saturday and AK to DHS to Epcot on Friday.
