Sorry if this has been answered before, but do 2 way radios work on the cruise ship? I tried to use the search, but it was disabled. Thank you!!

We used 5 mile range radios on are last cruise. Sometimes I had to leave the room to call DS. There were times when they worked really well and times when they did not work at all. We go again in 3 weeks and we are taking 7 mile range radio's. I hope that they work.

From previous posts, I gathered that the ones with the sub-channels for privacy were MUCH more effective.

I thought we'd use the radios much more than we actually did. They ended up being in the way and we didn't use them at all after the first couple of days. We just left each other notes in the cabin if we were separated.

As a gentle reminder...
When using the two ways on the ship, please show courtesy to your fellow passengers. Whilst we were enjoying a lovely meal in Palo, the patrons at another table were conversing with someone on their two way. This was worse than a cell phone, as we all had to endure both sides of the conversation.

It is okay to have your two way at Palo, but if you need to talk, please excuse yourself and leave the dining area.

Sorry, I am off my soap box now.

just to clarify the FRS or family radio signal(?) is a 2 mile range MRS is the one you need a FCC license (although no one gets one especially outside usa) 5 mile range.

OUR FRS is without privacy channels and is really worthless. You get everyone asking for mom or dad. Just not your kids. FRS is okay on the ship and depending on where u are work good. We actually could sortof hear from the ship to the family beach on CC.

The MRS from sams about $60+ were worth it for us. These have the privacy channels and we had little or no interference. From the ship to CC was perfect and clear. (family beach).

Our kids used it to contact around the ship. Agree on the palos quote.

Hope that helps.

I highly recommend 2 way radios. Recommend motorola with vibrating alert feature, as when you are on deck 9, you won't always hear the audio alert. The difference between the 2 and 5 mile range is really overrated. It is far more a feature of your altitude and obstructions. I'd just go with the FRS radios (2 mile range). These radios are very useful on the islands when you want to split up to explore.

I agree with the Palo's comment. We turn them off when in restaurants or shows. However, before the start of the show it is handy to have the radios, as invariably one member of the party is running late and with the radio you can tell the late arrival where you are sitting.

Hey KenP.

Unless the late arrival is an annoying MIL...
