I intend to buy some radios for the cruise. Is it worthwhile to buy the radios with the extra 38 channels or is 14 enough. Can anyone recommend one type over another. Are there any extra features that some have over others that are useful?

I would DEFINITELY get the kind with subchannels. With only 14 channels, you can run into people who think they "own" a channel (we heard a terrible case of "radio rage" once at IOA, with such terrible language that I shuddered to think about all the kids who were probably listening it). You will also find that some kids use the radios as toys. With subchannels, you have a better chance of finding a non-used channel. We have the kind that "lock" into each other, so we cannot hear other people's conversations. Our conversations are scrambled so they sound garbled to others. They are Kenwood brand, and we love them! Just be aware that the range is not very good in many parts of the ship due to all the metal.
