I saw that they are performing the surgery on this baby to remove her undeveloped twin. Question for the docs who frequent board. It's been said that the mouth of the underdeveloped twin moves when the baby is nursing, and that it has a partially developed brain. Would the anesthesia adminstered to the baby, also numb any pain that the underdeveloped twin might feel?

Yes. The second twin doesn't have a body, so the heart and lungs of the other baby is supplying both babies. Anesthetic in the blood stream of the twin with the body will be circulated to the undeveloped twin too. Even if the second twin had a heart and lungs, the article said they share arteries, which means their circulatory system is connected.
I'm an RN, not a doctor, but I think anyone with a medical backround would say the same.

I hope she survives:( That picture is not what I expected to see at all, it's freaky:(

Oh my. Poor thing.

Kind of puts things in perspective though doesn't it?
...don't sweat the small stuff in life !

Oh my gosh, I've never seen something like that before. I hope the surgury is successful.

I'll second that.

I saw that story on the news this morning. Wow! We were debating if the other head (since it was a brain), was it another person? Definetly a mind blowing concept.

I hope things are successful for them! Poor baby.

What a tragic situation for all involved, particularly the parents... May God give the parents peace and protect that little sweetheart throughout her surgery... :(

I agree. I remembered seeing on tv, a situation where there was one body and 2 heads...one side by side....each with her own neck. I never would have thought such a thing was possible. JUst curious......does this happen more to females?

I was wondering this too.

I hope the surgery is succesful and the baby thrives. :)

Mystery Machine...That is a good question for the debate board! It would be interesting to hear other's viewpoints on this!!

They just announced that she died during recovery from the surgery.
The pictures on Yahoo were amazing. It states that is was an unformed conjoined twin. Joined at the head. You can see the eyes/ears/nose/mouth of the undeveloped twin.
How awful it must be for that family!

gosh.. just 5 min ago on CNN they were saying she was expected to make a full recovery

Thanks for the link Dan. I was just about to look on my home page for the news when you posted.

Oh, how horrible...

The first link was updated and reported the death before I could read the rest of this thread.

Such a sad couple of days for our innocent babies.... :(

So sad for the family.:( I looked at the photo and was honestly expecting the heads to be side by side. I would of never imagined that. May God grant the parents peace.................
