Two Germans Dine Deluxe Again ... (FINISHED!)

I am also sorry that Capt. Grille was so awful for you but I am also a little bit relieved because not the whole experience was so bad. (like we had last year in the Sci Fi Restaurant – very bad food, bad atmosphere, bad and unfriendly waiter. But that is another story).

How would you rate your experience at the Captains Grille if you would have been seated right away, and if you would have had a friendly waitress?

And by the way: Are there other options in this hotel to have breakfast? (on the regular Dining Plan?) We have never been in this hotel before, only in the Beach Club Resort (Cape May Café for breakfast). And I would like to try this hotel for breakfast during a future trip. So are there any other breakfast restaurants in this hotel?

Wow, that fried green tomato lunch looks amazing! I have never even considered eating at Trails End. Unfortunately out days of staying Deluxe are behind us and it seems like such a hassle to get there when not staying at WL. But that meal has made me reconsider for a future trip!

I know, it's a bit of a trip to get there. What I personally would highly suggest, though, if you're not pressed for time during your trip, is devote a whole half-day to it:

- Start at the Wilderness Lodge, look at that beautiful resort if you're not familiar with it already (the lobby, the beautiful grounds with the geyser, maybe the shop ...).

- Go for a loop around the lake on the ferryboat, or even two loops (can you tell how much I love it? ;) )

- Rent a Sea Raycer at the marina to go out on the lake on your own (they really go quite fast, I found it a great experience, exhilarating yet serene :) )

- Take a leisurely walk along the lake and through the woods to Fort Wilderness, or maybe rent a bike to get there.

- Have a stroll through the wooded grounds at the Fort, maybe paying a little visit to the horses at Tri Circle-D Ranch, or lounge around on the beach.

- By that time you should be more than ready for dinner at Trails' End. ;)

So sorry about your experience at Captain's Grille - that server sounds like she was unnecessarily rude  OK, so maybe it hasn't put me off eating there but I may reconsider since, as a party of 8, we are likely to have the automatic 18% gratuity added to our bill and I wuld be reluctant to pay that if the service was as poor. I agree with you, too, there are much nicer places to eat in the locality.

Trails End sounds nice but is probably a bit of a trek if not staying at Fort Wilderness or Wilderness Lodge. Since we are staying at the villas in October, though, I will keep it in mind for October as a nice spot for lunch.

Yes, we would certainly not have liked being forced to tip that server 18%! (Frankly, in Germany we would most definitely have skipped tipping her altogether. The only reason why we tipped her at all is since that is so much more customary - and in higher percentages - in the States than at home, but rest assured it was not 18% ...)

About Trails End - see my post above!

Sorry Capt. Grille was so awful for you! There's really no excuse for how that server treated you, especially at Disney!

Trail's End looks good though...your DH's meal looks really yummy, I'd love to get my hands on those sweet potato fries!

Yes, they were really good! Has anybody seen that movie I spoke about, by the way, the "Green Tomatoes" one? Or does that have a completely different name in English? I love that movie ...

How would you rate your experience at the Captains Grille if you would have been seated right away, and if you would have had a friendly waitress?

That's a very valid question - these were exactly the two factors that made it so horrible.
However, had we been seated straight away and the service had been good, the experience would still only have been okay and nothing to rave about. Not especially good food (mind you I can only judge the buffet here though, not any of the a la carte items), not particularly stunning decorations nor any special theming, not even really any windows to have a view out of since there is a surrounding corridor between the restaurant and the windows.

In my opinion, this is one of the least interesting restaurants in this abundantly restaurant-filled area. Therefore, their one and only raison d'etre to me seems that they should provide an opportunity for hassle-free, quick, no-frills service (ideally even for walk-ins without a reservation).
This is what I would have expected, and this is the main reason why I was so unhappy with the whole experience. Had the restaurant had anything else to offer (like great theming, especially good food, character appearances), I would have found it easier and less affronting to deal with their other shortcomings.

And by the way: Are there other options in this hotel to have breakfast? (on the regular Dining Plan?) We have never been in this hotel before, only in the Beach Club Resort (Cape May Café for breakfast). And I would like to try this hotel for breakfast during a future trip. No, there really aren't. The Yachtsman Steakhouse is not open in the morning, and otherwise there is really only Captain's Grille. :confused3

After we had spent a few relaxed hours at Fort Wilderness and the Lodge, we moved on to Downtown Disney, a place we had sadly neglected so far on this trip. We had a look around the shops, a ride on the hot-air balloon, and checked out DisneyQuest (which I have to admit we hated, though). In the mid of all this merriment, we found ourselves in front of the ever-so-hard-to-spell (unless you are of Italian heritage, of course) Ghirardelli ice cream parlour. :thumbsup2

(Sorry about the bad photo, I forgot to take one outside and I was trying hard not to photograph the people sitting in front of this mural.)

We had heard lots of good things about it, but our scheduled dinner at Raglan Road was barely an hour away … Good thing we had skipped dessert at lunch, so we were at least able to have something light. –ish. :rolleyes1

Absolutely delicious Strawberry Smoothies! :lovestruc
Actually, I would do almost anything to have one of those again right now …
Next time we shall definitely also try the ice cream, but closely surrounded by lunch and dinner as we were, these were totally enough for us now.

So anyway, shortly after, we went on our merry way again, …

… soon to arrive at Raglan Road for dinner!

We have stayed at and do love the Wilderness Lodge! We will be eating at Artist Point and plan to explore a bit. I don't know that we will have time to do what you suggest above but it sounds like a great day for a future trip! :thumbsup2

Wow, those fried green tomatoes look awesome! I've always wanted to try them, mainly because of the movie, but also because I love anything fried! lol

Sorry for your poor experience at Captain's Grille. I would have been irate waiting that long in the morning. That is the time when you are on pins and needles waiting to get your start to the day! I have eaten there and enjoyed it, but I had a la carte and were lucky enough to get a very friendly waiter and seated within 5 minutes. I had the Eggs Benedict over crab cakes. I think if you have poor service at a restaurant, it ruins the entire experience. In some ways it is just as important as the food. You experienced poor service during the wait and then seemed to get a rude server to top it all off.

Those strawberry smoothies look great. I have never eaten at Ghirardelli's Ice Cream Fountain, just the samples from the chocolate shop next door. It seems like a must-do!

More great reviews! Is trails end now ala carte for lunch and dinner?

I have to make it to Ghiradelli's next time! Mmmmm!

Yes, they were really good! Has anybody seen that movie I spoke about, by the way, the "Green Tomatoes" one? Or does that have a completely different name in English? I love that movie ...

I think it might go under the name 'Fried Green Tomatoes' in the US. I haven't seen it though.

Annichan, I am really enjoying your reviews, thanks so much for doing them, and for doing such a great job of it!

My DH and I are vegetarians and Fort Wilderness lovers, so on our trip last January, we had to make a special trip over to Trail's End just for the Fried Green Tomatoes entree, which we had seen while endlessly and obsessively studying the menus on allears.net! :rotfl2:

We loved that dish, and the boat ride over makes a lovely break in a Magic Kingdom day, in my opinion. Fort Wilderness is such a peaceful oasis, it always makes us feel so rested, and to have a great meal while you're at it makes it that much better!

Just found these boards and your fabulous reviews!!! We are German Americans (my dad is from Emden and DH comes from Berlin). We both speak German (I even used to work for Lufthansa - but my German is not nearly as good as your English!). Anyway, your English is amazing - a million times better than all our relatives, and even better than my German friends who live here. :) Don't tell them I said that though... ;) Meine Schwiegereltern, die seit 1961 hier sind, koennen nicht Englisch so gut wie du! :teeth:

Anyhow, we too are big foodies, and love dining at Disney! We love food so much we only go to Disney during the Food and Wine Festival. Our next trip is this October (94 days, 9 hours and 54 seconds, but who's counting?! ;) ). I can hardly wait, and reading your trip report and reviews is just exciting me more! Thanks for spending all the time putting it together.

You and your DH are just so cute!

I have some friends who love Disney but complain all the time that there is no good food in Disney!! I am going to send them a link to your TR so they can see for themselves what I have been trying to convince them of for so long!!

I have to add one more thing.... I nearly fell off the chair laughing when I read your description of the cool Berlin student who had to wear the Lederhosen in Epcot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to read it to my husband too. Way too funny, and I feel badly for them too!

Although they could use some more great food items there - maybe some currywurst, zweibelkuchen or a nice Doener!!! Or a herring broetchen a la Nordsee.....

Mmmmm, currywurst and a doener. Both delicious after a night of German beer!

Great memories of my years in Germany!

Ghirardelli's is the one place we HAVE to go every single trip! I love the mint bliss sundae  Your strawberry smoothies looked pretty good though.

I take it Raglan Road is coming up ;)

Whew! I just read you WHOLE other review last night that you linked on the first page! LOVED it! I can't wait to dive into this one now :yay:

Yes, Artist Point is definitely on our list again for next time, when we stay at Wilderness Lodge again. (Or actually I will be trying to rent us points for the WL Villas, as that worked so well last time with the Beach Club Villas and saved us quite a lot of money.)

Wow, those fried green tomatoes look awesome! I've always wanted to try them, mainly because of the movie, but also because I love anything fried! lol

Good to hear that you have had a better experience at the Captain's Grille, so maybe all is not lost there ;). I'm afraid we probably won't be giving it a second chance, but like I said before, that is also because there are just so many other places in that area to choose from.

More great reviews! Is trails end now ala carte for lunch and dinner?

I have to make it to Ghiradelli's next time! Mmmmm!

According to the menus at Allears, dinner is still a buffet, it is only lunch that they now serve à la carte.

I think it might go under the name 'Fried Green Tomatoes' in the US. I haven't seen it though.

Correct. The novel it's based on has the longer title of "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" :thumbsup2

If you liked the book, I believe there is a sequel, I believe. The author has also written other books!

I should definitely read the novel (and the sequel), that's a good idea! It's been several times that I have loved a movie, then read the book and found out that it was even better.

Yay to another Fort Wilderness fan! :yay:

Welcome to the DIS, and thank you for your comments and the really nice compliment about my English! :flower3:
(Keine Angst, ich verrate das weder euren Freunden noch euren Schwiegereltern)
Thank you for reminding me again about that Berliner in Lederhosen, I had all but forgotten about him. Poor guy! ;)

And actually, you are totally right, they should offer Nordsee style rolls with herring at Epcot. The whole Germany pavilion is so much based on Southern German culture and food and architecture, it would be really nice to have something representing the North as well. (And yes, I KNOW that it's telling that I would be happy to be represented by a herring roll! :upsidedow)

Mmmmm, currywurst and a doener. Both delicious after a night of German beer!

Oh, I didn't know (or simply don't remember you saying) that you once lived in Germany too! I'm not a big currywurst fan myself I have to say, but give me a doener anytime! (And the night of German beer, of course ... :rotfl2:)

Ghirardelli's is the one place we HAVE to go every single trip! I love the mint bliss sundae  Your strawberry smoothies looked pretty good though.

Whatever makes you think that?? :rolleyes1
Yes, shame on me for laziness, it's coming up in a minute! :thumbsup2

Wow, thanks for reading my whole other review - and I'm impressed that you still don't have enough of me and want to read more :rotfl2:.

Our dinner reservation tonight was at Raglan Road, where they had decorated for Halloween:

P1050539.jpg

We never got to see more of it than this doorframe though, as a side door to the left was open and there was seating available on the patio. As I may have mentioned before once or twice or a dozen times, we love al fresco dining (as long as it isn't too hot or sunny out), so we opted for that instead of heading inside.
Once more, this meant that we were allowed to skip the line (which was quite short anyway though) as everybody else was waiting to be seated inside, and not a minute later we sat at our nice outdoor table.

First of all, we were brought some bread and an olive oil dip (I didn’t have any of it so I cannot really comment on taste, but it certainly looked appealing):

P1050540.jpg

For drinks, I decided on a beer flight – some yummy beers and not all that expensive, either.

P1050541.jpg

The Four Provinces of Ireland – Guinness, Smithwicks, Harp and Kilkenny beers.
DH for some reason decided against the beer flight and had himself a couple of Corona’s instead (not simultaneously though of course).

This was his appetizer:

P1050544.jpg

The Whiskey-Glazed Chicken Kabob, which he really enjoyed.

Meanwhile, and in the DxDP-induced slightly overfed state I was by now pretty much currently in, I opted for something light:

P1050545.jpg

Heritage Tomato Salad - Heirloom tomato and rocket salad, with shallots, parmesan crisps and balsamic reduction.

As his main course, DH chose the creatively named Pie in the Sky:

P1050546.jpg

On the menu, this is advertised as "reach new heights with our chicken and wild mushroom pie served with a rocket lettuce salad", and it seems this didn't let him down. ;)

My own entrée, however, sadly was a bit disappointing to me:

P1050548.jpg

Goats Town - Goats cheese terrine made with sauteed garlic, shallots, shiitake mushrooms in an herb and breadcrumb crust served with a berry compote and mixed greens.
It sounds great as described in the menu, but I really did not care for it too much. The compote (and thus the salad) was far too sweet for my taste, while the goat's cheese was added in such measures that it was simply overpowering. Much too much, much too heavy. (And I usually love goat’s cheese!) I'm afraid I left most of it.

The fact that I thus pretty much "only" had two salads helped me a little while later, when our desserts arrived.
Just like last year, I was wanting to combine and then share two desserts that go just perfectly together – but DH claimed he could not eat another bite so I had to brave them alone :thumbsup2.

So here they are – our (read, mine :rolleyes1) wonderfully combined desserts:

P1050549.jpg

Dunbrody Kiss ("Chef Dundon's gift to America. Chocolate. Add chocolate. Then add some more.")

P1050550.jpg

Market Street - fresh fruit basket with natural yogurt and a honey drizzle.
A perfect combination of flavours!

By now, it was pretty dark and it was getting hard to see what we had on our plates anyway, so the timing was perfect to head home.
All in all, this was a very nice meal even though nothing apart from the dessert combo was really truly memorable, and I could well imagine that we will return again some other time.

Coming up next: Breakfast at Kouzzina, take one.

This is the first review I've ever seen of Raglan Road that didn't include their bread pudding - that fruit platter looks perfect and not too heavy!

Thanks again for another great review - it probably won't become my favorite WDW restaurant, but I'm more and more tempted to try Raglan Road. :thumbsup2
