Two Germans Dine Deluxe Again ... (FINISHED!)

No, still not the one I was thinking about! But it does look rather delicious and I think it would be enough to share between two people if one isn't too hungry... I was thinking about the waffle.

I love the look of those outdoor tables, I think just the ability to sit outside might get us there one morning! :goodvibes

I really like Kouzzina. The waffle is delicious! I just wish that Cat Cora would stand up against the Disney machine and use REAL bacon, not the carp they serve around the rest of property. :)

Breakfast at Kouzzina looks really nice! We have a dinner scheduled there. I've never tried it before.

I had an underwhelming lunch at Captain's Grill the last time I was there. I am wondering if it is a systemic problem. The place was nearly empty and it took us 2-1/2 hours to eat a burger and a chicken sandwich. Really???

Loved Kouzzina! I went there for dinner and the avgolemono is AMAZING!!! :cloud9:

Enjoying the report!

If breakfast at Kouzzina is anywhere near as good as our dinner was we will definitely make a stop there one morning!

Both of your breakfasts at Kouzzina looked very yummy! I just added an ADR for breakfast at Kouzzina on our last day and by the looks of this I'm glad I did! The menu looks to be a little different than most places. Loving your reviews as always!

Just caught up with your wonderful reviews

Kouzzina looks lovely and what a great spot to sit and enjoy breakfast :goodvibes

Looking forward to your HBD review as this will be a new one for us in October :thumbsup2

I had a bad experience at Kouzzina for dinner but breakfast looks nice. I'll have to add it to the ever growing list of places I want to try.

I'm a little late to the posting game, as I've been reading your reviews all along (and they're great!). The olive bread at Kouzzina looks so yum; was it divine? I'd like to try it...right now.
But--the main reason I have to comment is because your kitties are, no exaggeration, twins of the three cats we had when I was growing up. It makes me miss them, but it also makes me think of them and smile :goodvibes Ours were called Tapioca (that was my spelling as a six year old :) ), Stacey, and Paw-Nee, starting with the orange longhair and working clockwise. Yours are just as cute.

Oh okay, I'm afraid we didn't have the waffles the third time round either :confused3.

Definitely do check out the restaurant for an outdoor breakfast though, I'm sure you will like it - seriously, this (the breakfast and the walk to and from it to the Beach Club Villas) was one of the best parts of the trip for us!

Seems like I should try those waffles next time, with so many people talking about them :thumbsup2. I had to look them up in the menu just now as I didn't even really notice them we were there - I guess it is the mixture of sweet and savoury that seems a bit weird to us even though it is so common over there, so we didn't really consider them.

I hope your dinner will be nice too!

Two and a half hours? Ouch, that sounds even worse than our experience there!! :headache:

If breakfast at Kouzzina is anywhere near as good as our dinner was we will definitely make a stop there one morning!

And by the sound of it, we should try having dinner there next time ... Would anybody happen to know if the outside seating is also available at dinnertime? Or would those tables be in the plain glare of the sun in the afternoon? (Guess I have just exposed myself as being totally useless with figuring out compass directions :sad2:)

Brown Derby review coming up in a minute ...

I had a bad experience at Kouzzina for dinner but breakfast looks nice. I'll have to add it to the ever growing list of places I want to try.

Oh, sorry to hear that your dinner was not good there! What happened, was it to do with the food?

Thank you so much for your really nice and cute post! :flower3:
I'm glad that looking at my kitties made you remember yours with a smile. I love and adore them, even though they sometimes make our lives a living hell. The other night the red tomcat, that ever-active little bringer of chaos and mayhem, threw everything off the drawer that was on there, pushed stuff around for a couple of hours on the floor, then climbed all over on my husband trying to lick his face and screaming for food (as if, at two in the morning!). And then he managed to flick the lamp switch and turn on the light - that was when he finally had us wide awake. I constantly pray that this was just by accident and he won't show us that little trick every night now!

Those of you who happen to have read my first dining report may remember that last time, we booked the Fantasmic Dinner Package at Hollywood Brown Derby and ended up not going to Fantasmic after all, as we were tired and didn’t fancy standing in line and waiting for it, not even with our special tickets.

Well, what can I say – we are perfectly capable of making the same mistake twice, as that is exactly how it went down again this time! :sad2:

Anyway, we were sat after only a couple of minutes' wait and actually were shown to the table next to the one we had had last time, in the upper portion of the room near the back wall. I was happy about that as I do not quite fancy the lower seating area in the middle, it seems a bit louder and more hectic to me.

For drinks, we ordered a bottle of Evian to share, and a Bud Light for each of us (no more alcohol than that – due to the Fantasmic package, this dinner was really early, at 4.25).

This was our bread basket:

Incidentally, allow me to veer off-topic here for a moment:
For us two Germans, US-american air conditioning is a wondrous thing. Be it in buses, houses, cars or any kind of buildings, you are always enveloped by refreshingly cool air as you enter - not like in Germany, where hot summer days (albeit a much rarer occurrence than, say, in Florida) usually mean that you are tortured by the heat through all your waking and working hours, up until the moment you finally fall asleep after tossing and turning in your scorching hot and stuffy bedroom.
Hardly any private homes have air-conditioning, few public buses and even fewer offices do - the one I work in doesn't, to be sure -, and even places like restaurant, cinemas and malls are not always air-conditioned (imagine a crowded mall with no air-conditioning in the middle of July …? No, don't. This is a dining report, after all :thumbsup2).

What never ceases to amaze me about that miraculous American air-conditioning, though, is the fact that they never seem to realize when enough is enough. I mean, why turn up the air-condition so much as to plunge the room into near-Arctic temperature lows? Never in a German winter, wrapped snugly in my several layers of winter clothes, have I felt as freezingly cold as I did sitting in an air-conditioned restaurant in the US, dressed very lightly because it was blistering hot outside and I just hadn't counted on a sudden ice age.

So here we were at the Brown Derby, the air-condition outlet was right behind me and breathing icy winds down my back, and I asked our server if there was any way to turn down the air-conditioning as I was freezing.
She said that it could not be turned down but that she heard these requests all the time, so she had the perfect solution for me: a nice fresh table-cloth. Left in the oven for a few minutes and then draped over me.

P1050778.jpg

While this was an incredibly nice and sweet thing of her to do and it really helped me get warmer, I still cannot help but wonder: Why not choose a lower setting for the air-conditioning in the first place, instead of having guests turn blue with cold and caringly wrapping them in warm table linens? Is it really necessary to move from scorching heat to icy cold and back again whenever they leave or enter a building? Strange customs indeed. :confused3

(But please do not feel offended, dear Americans – rest assured that I would choose your way over visiting a crowded non-conditioned German mall in summer any day! :thumbsup2)

Anyway, back to the main topic – and what better way to move back onto foodie topics than with this glorious appetizer of mine:

P1050780.jpg

Spicy Sashimi-grade Tuna Tartare - with Cucumber, Daikon and Pepper Salad, Avocado Wasabi Sauce, and crisp Lotus Root Chips.
By now, you probably all now that I would never turn down a tuna appetizer for anything – but I was especially glad that I had ordered this one, as I also had a good laugh about its futuristic appearance. I mean, doesn't it look like some kind of semi-organic spaceship? (Erm, anyway, it tasted wonderful!)

DH's appetizer was this:

P1050781.jpg

Blue Lump Crab Cake - with Potato Crust, Green Cabbage Slaw, Cognac-Mustard Sauce, and Rémoulade.
A bit overexposed unfortunately, but quite nice as I am told.

As far as entrées go, I regret that I only have one photo for you as we both decided on the same dish:

P1050782.jpg

Char-grilled Filet of Beef - with Herb-roasted mashed Potatoes, Cremini Mushrooms, Cippolini Onions, and Cabernet Wine Syrup.
We both really felt like having beef that day, and we were not let down: This was very tasty and juicy (medium a little on the rare side, just as we both like it), and once again coming with very yummy mashed potatoes.

For dessert, DH was being good again and only ordered a cup of cappuccino. I, however, craved dessert. On our last visit, I had tried the signature grapefruit cake but found it much too sweet, even though beautifully presented. This time, I did not mind sweet:

P1050784.jpg

Banana-White Chocolate Toffee Tower - on Cocoa-Almond Cookie and Bananas "Foster".

This was really good – but then again, give me bananas, toffee and white chocolate and you cannot really go wrong ;).

After this food fest, we were both a bit tired (not to mention over-stimulated with too many rides and too much theme park activity - didn't think that could ever happen to me but apparently it can :sad2:), so we decided to skip Fantasmic which still was a few hours away anyway, and opt for a nice quiet evening.
So, straight from the restaurant, we went for a nice long but leisurely walk along the river to the Beach Club (we had never done this before – it is a bit of a hike, true, but we took our time and watched the ducks in the river and the bunnies on the lawns, and it was really nice and peaceful).
The rest of the day, we lounged by the pool, and at night we watched the top half of the Illuminations fireworks from our hotel room balcony. It was a great way to spend an evening – but I am determined to see Fantasmic yet, some day! :thumbsup2

Coming up next: Breakfast at Boma!

Brown Derby is GREAT! The price might be less than other signatures and it might not be quite as fancy as some... but our dishes were outstanding.... so much we went back for lunch in the same trip. Here's some of what we had (detailed review - see the link below for 2010 dining review).

Oyster and Brie Cheese Soup -- this was an incredible and delicious soup. Who would have thought to mixe oysters and brie? Loaded with delicious oysters too. No skimping on that.... I've had some other seafood soups that barely had enough shrimp, crab, lobster etc. to give it taste.

Black Grouper with Golden Beets Entree -- wonderful and on par with the seafood we had at Flying Fish Cafe. Delicious, moist, but firm texture - perfectly cooked.

Steak Filet -- we both had the steak filet for lunch, cooked just the way we ordered, 1 medium, 1 just a little rarer than medium. Big Filets, tender, delicious.

Can't wait to go back! We went for the fantasmic package dinner.. our waiter was clearly very busy getting everyone out on time for fantasmic but at our table, stopped and took his time to take good care of us. Handled the rush very well. Lunch was slower pace. But service both times great!

Brown Derby is very under-rated....

It's a statewide phenomenon. Everywhere in Florida is an ice chest in the summer. Partly due to the change in temp between outside and inside. Partly because of the temps the AC is set at. Most Floridian women that I know keep a light sweater or shawl in their car/bag just for that reason when they go out.

So true! I am also a Floridian woman, and in the summer months I never go to any restaurant, mall, movie theater, or church without a sweater in hand. As a result, I use sweaters all year round - in the winter I remove them when I come inside, and in the summer I remove them when I go outside! :rotfl2:

I think you'll find that many women think it's too cold but in this guy's opinion I have never felt any Disney restaurant in my vast dining experience has been too cold and some instances (especially at the F&W fest) the venues have been way too warm to be comfortable for me. I'm also the type that complains about the ridiculously hot water temperatures at Disney pools. When we were at SAB in May it was a bathtub and not enjoyable at all.

Mmmm Brown Derby looks good. I've only been once, but will definitely return. I'm not big on tuna tartare, but I love the presentation on it!

Oh, sorry to hear that your dinner was not good there! What happened, was it to do with the food?

Every dish we ordered was WAY too salty! I went with my Grandma, and we both like things heavy on the salt....so for us to find the salt level overwhelming is really a concern. Our server didn't do a good job either...I couldn't even see him anywhere for 3/4 of our meal.

That said, I do want to give Kouzzina another try someday. I went shortly after it opened so I'm hoping they've ironed out some of the kinks.

Loved reading your review of BD and seeing the great pics of the food.

We ate at BD in 1997 and were less than impressed but decided to give it another shot during our upcoming October trip and after reading your review I can not wait. I was not sure what I wanted for my entree but that filet did look good, as did DH's App, not a fan of tuna tartare, and you dessert looked so yummy. I was planning on trying the grapefruit cake but now I am not so sure anymore.

First time I heard that BD was freezing , I have heard Via Napoli can be the same way. I hope we do not freeze when we go there in October.

Having never visited Germany I had no idea the A/C is lacking there in warm weather, most interesting :)

Excellent review :thumbsup2

I can't wait to see your Boma review! It's one of the places I am most looking forward to trying during our upcoming trip.

I've really enjoyed reading your dining review--it gives me so many great ideas for my next trip! (I snuck back in time and read your previous one, too--I couldn't resist!)

I was quite convinced that I was going to have the Cobb salad at the Brown Derby, but I may have to reconsider after seeing your tuna appetizer. It looks INCREDIBLE. :worship:

This tuna thing loos indeed very funny! :goodvibes But good to hear that it also tastes delicious. We will eat lunch at the Brown Derby in October and the tuna appetizer is on my list of possibilities... :goodvibes
