Two families, One RV.

Hi All! My family and I will be be heading down 2/15 for a 9 night stay at Ft Wilderness! I haven't been there in many many years (I was probably the same age as my DD5!!) but I have many fond memories of camping at the Ft. (We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge on subsequent visits....)

It will be me, DH, DD5 and we will be staying with my parents in their RV. While they have a lovely RV (Winnebago Tour), I was wondering if there are places in the campground that would allow DH and I to get out of the RV and relax a bit. Big comfy chairs with wifi access, perhaps?

I'm just afraid that we will all go stir-crazy being holed up in the RV together. We're even considering getting a separate room at one of the value resorts for a night or two just to let both families have some privacy.

Any suggestions?

I'm super excited about going to WDW. It will be my daughter's first visit to the world (we did go to DLR in August)!!

You could take the trail to the Wilderness Lodge and enjoy the lobby there. I'm not sure about their wifi though.

Will you have bikes with you? A nice bike ride around the Fort would be a great "escape" from time to time. Also, maybe plan for some couple time either at the parks for for a nice dinner since you'll have your built in babysitters...and they'll probaby enjoy the time with your DD without you hovering (just speaking from experience and my own hovering!) We usually meet up with my parents in their MH, but we either have our own PUP or stay at another hotel, and DS always ditches us to stay in grandma and grandpa's "bus". I do have to say that staying at different resorts is a pain with logistics, especially around afternoon break time and then re-grouping for the evening. If you do decide to get your own room somewhere be sure to pack DD's stuff separately so she can stay with your parents and have everything all set in her own bag, including toothbrush/toothpaste and jammies.

Have you traveled with your parents before? We've had a pretty decent learning curve, especially since my parents live in FL and of course want to see us when we go down. Over time we've become very comfortable with going our own ways and doing our own things, and that's a big key for all of us enjoying our time. Early on we were all so stressed with trying to make sure everyone was all having fun all the time all at the same time. The more laid back with "we'll meet up later" the better (at least for us)

There are lots of places to go and chill for a few hours, if that's what you want to do. Bring along your own folding chairs, and depending on what site you get, set them up on your own site and relax, enjoying the fresh air and nature all around you. Take a long stroll around the campground, checking out everyone else's set ups. (or I suppose a "loop" around in a golf cart, if you want to spend the money) My favorite places to go would be Trails End porch-grab a rocker and people watch all you want, and the beach at the marina. If you get there an hour or so before the fireworks, you could have your choice of chaise lounges, enjoy the show, then head back to the RV for your together time. I'm sure others will have their own personal favorites. Just remember, there's no need to just sit around inside the RV, especially if the weather is nice.

I should have been more specific about our situation. My folks will already be there when we arrive via airplane. No bikes, and we will be at the mercy of whatever rec gear they have packed!

My daughter and I went to DLR with them this summer and we have been on several trips with them in the past. Usually we just get two hotel rooms, but they were planning on bringing the RV down anyway so we thought we'd tag along. (Yes, we were invited....)

I always pack my DD5's stuff separately...in fact, they keep lots of her stuff in the RV permanently so they will have it when they visit us and go camping!

I'm just afraid that we will want some quiet time to relax without everyone else in the living area.

Take internal transportation to Downtown Disney for a glass of wine/beer and something to eat at Earl of Sandwich. Wander around the shops without DD5 wanting you to buy her something ever 5 minutes. Get a sundae with 2 spoons at Ghiardelli.

Take a boat/monorail and resort hop.

Wander down to the beach for the Electric Boat Parade.

Rent a canoe/kayak to explore the Fort Wilderness canals.

Lots of adult stuff to do. Have fun!

There is entirely too much to do at and around the Fort to be "holed up inna RV" or spending your time with your face stuck atta computer,,,what would be the point in going
Get out there and investigate, play,walk, run, swim, archery, fishing, tennis, horse shoes, ride a horse, Fort Fishing Excursions, go looping, shopping ALL OVER DISNEY, eat a Kitchen Sink , see the fireworks from the Marina beach,,then watch the nightly boat parade come by the Fort at the lake at 9:45PM, play minature golf, go golfing,,,,okay I'll stop now , the rest you'll have to find yourself.

Unfortunately, my husband will have to do a fair amount of work while we are at WDW. I had to twist his arm to get him to come as it is!

We're not really "outdoorsy" folks, and we will be exhausted after touring the parks with DD5.

What about a tent with blow up bed next to the RV? It would make a nice little private retreat or maybe you could rent a popup? I've seen quite a few sites that have a popup set up in the back and a RV in the front.

Someone here on this site rents them and will bring it and set it up for you. Just a thought. I'm sure whatever you choose, you'll have a great time!

When I was pregnant with our first, 29 years age, we drove to Brownsville Texas to visit my grandparents who were Snowbirds, They had a 20 Ft. El Dorado Class C MH. We pulled up to it and DH said "WE all are staying in THAT?" Well we did and several months later we bought our first MH and have been RVing ever since.

Anyway, we just finished camping at FW with all my kids coming and staying for at total of 8 at our campsite. We used a tent behind the MH for 4 of the boys, and I got reservations for DS and wife for 3 nights at Dolphin to give them some time just the two of them. The remaining 5 nights they stayed in our RV.

Speaking from a mother's perspective with a MH: Space is limited so try to keep your "stuff" together and picked up. Clutter in a MH really bothers me.
Maybe you will have a certain closet or area ready for you. I tried to be hostess, tried to make sure everyone had a good time. DDinlaw had one bad day, but got over it.

My other kids flew down at different times and used Magical Express to the campground.
This is often overlooked Make sure your name is on the reservation and you can take ME with out the folks having to pick you up or take you to the airport. Saved us a lot of time.

If you do get a rainy day, make it a family game day. I keep Disney Life, Sorry, Monopoly and cards in my MH. My kids learned to play Euchre and Texas Hold Em at FW.

One night when MK had extra hours, DH and I took a boat ride to and from the MK and had the boat to ourselves.We sat up front. It we a very quiet and romantic ride! We also like to walk to Wilderness Lodge very early or at dusk. You will see many deer and other wildlife.
Enjoy the outdoors. So much you can do and without extra cost. You can take the boat to Wilderness Lodge or Contemporary. We like to take a boat to MK and then Monorail to Poly. They have a very nice lounge to sit and have a drink, or go to the outside bar and then sit on the beach.
Just go explore and you will find what YOU like!

I assume your husband may need the Wifi for his job. All internet costs $ at the Fort as with most resorts at WDW. The Wifi points at the Fort don't work well. This may help you.

The three WIFI spots at Fort Wilderness are Reception Outpost, Meadows, and Crockett's Tavern. Cost is $4.99 for the first 60 minutes or $9.95 for 24 contiguous hours. Technical Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling the vendor, Smart City, at their help desk: 407-938-HELP. Both the Cabins and Preferred campsites can also rent a cable modem kit to have high speed Internet access. A Local Area Network (LAN) cable is required. The necessary modem kit is rented at the Front Desk in the Outpost. A $125 refundable deposit is required and the kits should be reserved in advance or will most likely not be available. Cost is $9.95 for 24 contiguous hours.

As far as what to do away from the RV, there are almost limitless options. A couple of our favorites are: sitting at Crockett's Tavern in the late evening, eating some nachos with a frozen drink or sitting on the porch at Crockett's in one of their rocking chairs; going over to Wilderness Lodge and sitting in front of the big fireplace while munching on one of those big slices of their apple-caramel pie that we picked up from the Whispering Canyon Cafe. (OMG ); or going over to the Contemporary and resort hop on the monorail, usually stopping at the Polynesian and getting an order of the honey ginger wings from the bar by Ohana's.
