Two Contracts, Two Use Years, how to manage

I have 100 points currently at OKW, with a June UY, using for the first time ( at ssr) in January. I am looking to buy another hundred points sometime next year. My question is should I look for another 100 at OKW with a June UY ( not in any hurry) or should I go opposite, December or January at another resort?

Traveling would most likely occur in fall, spring break time or holiday time.

Thoughts?

Are you planning on buying directly through Disney? In order to get a new UY, you will have to buy a completely new contract - 160 points or whatever they require at that point.

We would go resale route again. Not in any hurry at all. Traveling in January then probably not until late 2010.

With only 100 points, I'd probably do an add on of the same use year at the same resort to have the most points available at one time and place.

When we first purchased, we bought 230 points at OKW right about the time BWV opened. We figured out after the first trip that it wasn't enough points, and we did the same head scratch about what to do. We finally decided that it made the most sense to have all our points available at one time, so we added on another 150 also at OKW. Now when we added on at AKV, we knew it would be a small addon, so of course we had to get the same use year (direct from Disney). I just feel that with so few points, you will be happiest with them both the same use year.

I almost did that. We started with a contract for 150 points at BWV purchased through the Timeshare Store. We soon wanted to expand and buy points at VWL. I almost bought another contract through the same route as BWV but my guide gave me the best advice ever. He advised me NOT to buy another contract with a different UY. Instead, I purchased VWL points through Disney with the same Oct UY as my BWV contract. Then we added on points at AKV (our favorite resort in the world!) as soon as we could after they announced DVC there!

I am juggling points at 3 different resorts but at least they all have the same UY. That's hard enough to track. I can't imagine how much more complex it would be if I had different UY involved, too.

I agree with the OPs. Juggling multiple contracts is sufficiently complicated, even when they all have the same UY. It can be done, and I know people do it, but my feeling is that the extremely negligible benefits of having multiple UYs don't make up for the extra hassle.

Great advice! Thank you! Think I will just keep my eyes peeled for another 100 at OKW with a June UY.

I have two use years. Got to admit it's a bigger hassle then I expected and I am probably going to sell the last of the points in the second use year this winter.

I got a good deal on some points which is how I wound up with two years.... but I really dont' need this many points and it's just a hassle.

I bought my VB contract solely for VB. If I add on again (only for HHI) I will do an add-on to my March UY. Definitely don't want more than two master contracts.

I agree with the others - because 100 points doesn't go all that far, LOL. Without a lot of planning, you could end up with "stranded" points (i.e., points in the wrong contract and no transfers left).

A huge advantage for OKW is the ability to stay in those wonderful Grand Villas. It's tough to reserve those if you have to wait for the 7 month window. If you ever think you might want to splurge a bit and try one out, then buy your add on at OKW!

I don't necessarily disagree with any of the other posts but here are a few other thoughts. I see two questions, home resort and UY given you've already stated you want around 100 points (this assumption could be key). IMO, it comes down to how much of a detail person you are and how much of a planner you are. For one who routinely books at 7 months or later and esp has trouble keeping up with their check register, I'd say same UY for sure and likely same resort. OTOH, for those that can manage the minor inconvenience of the extra details, and esp since you mentioned you often travel during high demand times. Finding 100 points in a contract you're happy with for the same UY is possible but may be more difficult and you may miss out on some other good deals. The advantages of a different home resort are obvious, the ability to book at 11 months for two resorts. The advantages of a different UY are heightened with the new banking rules as they allow you to time a given trip in relationship to your UY to give additional protection. If you're set on travel in Dec, I'd consider a UY of Oct-Dec with Dec best complementing your current situation.

I wouldn't rule out a direct purchase as your closing costs would be less or non existent and you might get additional choices. In that situation I'd consider AKV or wait for BLT. Of course you could look for the perfect resale then change your mind later if things didn't work out. Good luck.
