Two Contracts, Same Resort - Any Reason NOT to Transfer & Combine?

I have two AKV contracts, one 50 points (Dec UY) and one 110 points (Mar UY). Is there any reason not to just transfer the 50 points into the 110 point membership every year to make my life easier? I assume this would give me 160 points with the ability to book online at AKV 11 months out and anywhere else 7 months out.

I know the alternative is to book the nights separately and have MS combine, but then I lose some time advantage (i.e. book the first 5 nights with one contract, then have to wait 5 days for the window to open up to book the last 2 nights with the other contract... instead of just booking all 7 nights at once).

One "downside" is it would use my one transfer per year (though it seems MS can be lenient) but that doesn't bother me because I don't envision transferring in/out with anyone else anyways.

You wouldn't have online access to the points you transferred any longer and would always have to call to use them. You wouldn't even be able to see them.

Well then! Nevermind with that idea. Say I book 5 nights with my 110 point contract online, can I then call MS and have them add two nights with my other contract? Or would I have to wait 5 days for the window to open up?

like Kat said -- you wouldn't be able to see the transferred points, so if you wanted to use them, you'd have to call in.

With that said, what you could do is book the first few days of your reservation using the 110 points online -- and then call MS to use the last of your points if you needed them for the reservation. I did that fairly recently and it worked well.

If you transfer the points over, they should have no problems booking the last 2 nights for you. I'm not sure if it's officially allowed, but they did it for me.

Right-- that makes sense. Thanks guys.

See - I would be more likely to use banking and borrowing and just use the two contracts separately. The 50 point one could be 150 for one set. Then I would only transfer when I have points that aren't going to get used any other way.

Transferred points retain the original resort and UY, so you could not use all the points to book at 11 months. I don't see this being of any use in your plans.

OP says both contracts are at same resort, so I don't see why 11 month window doesn't work.

I think the downside is that you will manually have to track points for banking windows. On the transferred points, you will not see a reminder that you have points or that it is time to bank. (AFAIK)

They have different UYs one is Dec the other is March, no matter which way you transfer, they are 4 months difference, they retain the original UY not morph into the same one.

Home resort is all that matters to be able to use them at 11 months. UY doesn't change when you can book - it might only change which "year" of points you are using. There will always be overlap for 2 UY's to use the same year of points but transferred points can be banked too so that covers anything that wouldn't overlap.

I have a March UY and when I once inquired about having Dec UY points transferred in, I was told about a complication that I'm still not sure I understand. It went something like this: I'm now in my (March) 2017 UY. I can't transfer in current Dec UY points, because they are in their 2016 UY, and I don't have a 2016 UY anymore. The Dec points haven't expired, and they should keep their original UY month when transferred, but MS has no place to put them in my account.

As I said, I'm still not sure I understand, but I'd be careful about this.

Are they both qualified? If they are, you might consider selling one and adding the other UY resale. That's esp true if you were thinking of adding more points anyway. If neither were qualified, I'd consider selling both and adding a single larger contract. You should be able to sell them on your own thus avoiding the sales commission if you wanted. This way you'd have a single master contract (if titled correctly) and points in a better UY. It'd also give you the option of addition a second home resort, esp if you kept the AKV 110 and sold off the 50. For this situation you're still likely better off to transfer and call than book them separately, esp if looking at value or concierge, because you could still book 7 days out, with 5 days at 8 am and the other 2 at 9 am on the phone call. And maybe they'll update the online at some point where you could see them online.

Remember, you can't borrow transferred points. That is something to watch out for with the December contract. Just make two reservations and email MS to link them. You may have to check out and in again, but you'll be able to stay in the same villa.
