Two Aussie first-timers in Disney! Lots of photos! NEW- FINAL CHAPTER! - Ch 20, Pg 30

Ohhh, Glendamax! Your amount of leave isn't too bad - only one week less than us! But the no rollover thing isn't much fun. Poor Glendamax! But on the other hand... you're so much closer to Disney World than us!! You could go every year for 3 weeks if you wanted to!! Yayyy! And also, in America you get to eat as much cheese popcorn as you want, and you get to shop at Abercrombie & Fitch, and you get zillions of tv channels, and you have the Cheesecake Factory, and you have Hersheys peanut butter cups!! AND you have Brad Pitt and David Duchovny!! What more could one ask for!?!
I never considered that you all have so much vacation time because you are so far away from alot of places. (that does make me feel better just a teeeny tiny bit) I think if I used my 3 weeks for Disney, I'd be a bit more crazy than I already am. Most of my friends already think I'm a bit weird for going ONCE a year!
I am greatful for everything you listed except: Abercrombie & Fitch - I think you have to be a size zero to wear those clothes. Brad and David - I'll take Seal and "Denny" from Grey's Anatomy anytime! :cloud9:

Yay, more replies to respond to! :surfweb:

NMAmy... Okay, next time I go to 50's Prime Time, I shall drag you along to eat my greens!! Yeuch!! I told our server that I didn't really like the taste of them, and she said it's one of those things - you either love them or hate them, there's no in between! She said she likes it best when her southern greens are cooked in bacon fat. Ewwww! Hehee, but anyway. I'm glad you'll follow along with the rest of our trip! I'm so sad that yours is over! What will I read now?! :sad2:

HalloweenQueen... Ooh! Have you been on the train to Savannah before? You sound like the voice of knowledge!! Hehee! It definitely was an experience... :lmao: but I'll get to that shortly!!

schmoopypoo... Aww, thankyou for your nice comments! It's lovely to know that other people agree with me sometimes, and my silly sentiments!! And yay, you're from Buffalo! Where Bruce Almighty was set! I love that movie. Heee. Plus, you have the same name as my cat! Yayyy! You must be a champ! :woohoo:

lisaj... I think smores sound better than they looked! Hehee! A few different restaurants at Disney make them - like Le Cellier, and 50's Prime Time, and I think Whispering Canyon, too...

Ricky's Girl... Trade Hugh Jackman for Brad Pitt? Nooo, I'd like to keep them both!! How about we trade Russell Crowe instead? Heee! And sadly, no... I don't have any other food photos from the rest of our trip! I only took Disney food photos, so I could post them here on the "food porn" thread! Ooh, Hawaii. We're going for three weeks - our first week is at Waikiki, and we haven't quite decided where to stay yet. Probably not right on the beach - somewhere a couple of blocks back, and a bit cheaper? Any suggestions? The second week, we're going on a cruise around the different islands for 7 nights. Yay! We've never been on a cruise before... should be fun! And for the last week, we're staying in Maui, at the Westin Maui resort. That's our "splurge" part of the trip! It's right on the beach and we're having an oceanview room, and it's quite expensive - but hey, it's our honeymoon!! Why not!?! Heee!! Where do you normally stay when you go to Hawaii? Any other suggestions of definite attractions or places to see and do? :yay:

Glendamax... Ooh yes, Denny from Grey's Anatomy is great!! That smile!! :cloud9: Pity he died though... :guilty: And yep, I agree that Abercrombie & Fitch's clothes are made for teeny little size 0's. I have hips, so I had no hope for their skirts or pants... but I bought a few t-shirts and 2 hoodies, which I love! It doesn't exist in Australia... I'd love to introduce it over her, but in sensible sizes!! :woohoo:

Anyway, thanks everybody for sticking around! I've started the next chapter, but it's Friday night and I'm afraid I have brain freeze! I'll definitely have it up by tomorrow though. Have a fun weekend!! :thumbsup2

Sounds like a really fun night at MGM! The last time we had dinner at Prime Time Cafe was in 1993 and had such a bad meal that we haven't been back there since! I really love the ambiance of the waiting room and the eating areas so I sneak in once in awhile just to see what it looks like. It might be fun to go just for dessert one time!:thumbsup2 So glad you loved Fantasmic. It's such a beautiful show but I don't like sitting too close to the front because you do get sprayed by the water! It's so sad that the Disney part of your trip is coming to a close but I am looking forward to hearing about your Savannah experience! My DH and I went to Charleston, SC in September for our 25th wedding anniversary and did a side trip to Savannah for the day. Hurry back!:rolleyes1

I really enjoyed your TR! Pre-Disney, @ Disney, and hopefully you will post a little post Disney??? :thumbsup2

I too am a HUGE Bones fan and have a HUGER crush on Booth. :flower3: I think that it has the whole Moulder/Skully sexual tension thing without the "freak out" factor of monsters in the sewer or people under the bed.

Hey everybody!

WDW Fan... Yeah, I don't think we'll be rushing back to 50's Prime Time! Even the desserts weren't so great! Glad you enjoy Fantasmic too! :cool1:

team weasel... Yay, another Bones fan!! I like Booth too, but I just can't not think of him as Angel, and that fake vampire face. Hehee. He's definitely no Mulder!! ;)

I'll have the next chapter up in a few minutes, guys!

Chapter 15… Bye bye Disney, hello Savannah!

Well, today was the day! The sad, sad day that we were leaving Disney World. Awwww. But really, I think we felt much sadder the night before, when we were actually leaving a park for the last time! That morning, it was really more of a rush than anything else! No time for sadness!

I think we woke up a bit late that morning – about 9am. We’d planned to grab some breakfast at Pop on the way out, but after we did our last minute packing, and said goodbye to our hotel room, we really only had 10 minutes in the Pop food court before the cab was due to arrive. So DF found a seat while I stood in the line. I ended up grabbing a breakfast platter with a waffle and some bacon. Lucky we only had 5 minutes to eat it, because ewwww, it was seriously bad. The waffle was soggy on the bottom, and the bacon wasn’t bacon, it was just cooked fat. :sad2: I think we had about two bites, before I quickly ran back to the food court, and used up all our remaining snack vouchers on cheese popcorn to take with us on the train! Weeee! :yay:

We certainly weren’t sad that we hadn’t eaten at Pop food court before this!! Maybe the dinners are better, but… ew. We sped out of the Pop food court, and waited for our cab in front of the lobby area at Pop. Our train wasn’t due to leave til 12.50, but we wanted to get there early, since we had no idea how far away the station was, or how early you’re meant to be at a train station to catch your train! :confused3

So our cab arrived, and we said goodbye to Disney World! Booo! :sad1: We also said goodbye to Disney hospitality, because our cab driver was the grumpiest person ever. He didn’t speak, he grunted. Heh. Whatever! The cab ride only took about 20 minutes, which meant we arrived at the Orlando train station about 2 hours before our train was due to leave! Eeek!

As soon as we walked into the train station, we felt like we’d stepped back in time. Heh, seriously. Are all train stations like that? Or just Orlando!? It was a wee bit scary actually. There was only the two of us in the whole station, plus a homeless guy, plus a scary looking dude who kept pacing back and forth, muttering to himself. It really was “Goodbye Disney World!”

After two hours of gripping onto our luggage tightly, the train finally arrived. And… wow! It was great! We had two seats next to each other, which were SO spacious! We could put our legs fully up, and still not touch the chair in front of us! Plus, you could stretch them right back, so we were almost lying down! Yay! We both slept for about 3 hours straight! There were a few strange people on the train, but apart from that, it was great! Much nicer than being squashed into an airplane seat! We really enjoyed watching the little towns that we whizzed through… we actually saw some small-town America! We also really enjoyed the cheeseburgers from the train café. Hehee! Seriously, they were great! :thumbsup2

All up, the train trip took around 6 hours. Admittedly, by the end of it, we were muttering to ourselves, “A flight would have only taken an hour!” but hey. It was an experience! And yayyy! We’d arrived in Savannah! As soon as we stepped off the train, we collected our luggage, and looked around for a cab to take us to our hotel. A strange guy came right up to us and said, “Do you need a taxi?” We were both a bit unsure of what to say, since we’d heard horror stories of people claiming to be taxi drivers who just like to rip people off. But we hesitantly said that yes, we needed a taxi, and he grabbed our luggage and chucked them in the back of his car! Eeep! To cut a long story short, he was a legitimate taxi driver – he had the ID and everything – but I think that’s just how Savannah works! It’s all very laid back and friendly – we felt bad for thinking the worst!!

He drove us straight to the Bed & Breakfast where we were staying, via some very scary looking areas! DF and I looked at each other in the back seat and whispered, “I hope all of Savannah isn’t like this!” But... phew! Once we got into the centre of town near our B&B, the Savannah we imagined was there. Beautiful old houses, town squares, amazing lush green hanging trees… yay! He told us then – “Don’t leave the Historic District of Savannah, unless you want your wallets stolen.” Yowza! :scared1: That may have been an exaggeration on his part, but we followed his advice anyway!

So some of you might be wondering (but probably not)… Why Savannah?! Apart from Savannah, everywhere else we were going was a major city. That was part of the reason – to see somewhere that wasn’t a major city – but mainly, it was my idea, all because of a movie. Well, a book, really. “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. I watched the movie when I was 16, because I had a crush on Jude Law, and also liked Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. When I first watched the movie, I absolutely adored it, and just really liked the look of Savannah, and was intrigued by the real-life stories surrounding the movie. I read the book it was based on later, and grew even more intrigued! So yep, we were going to Savannah because of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. If you haven’t seen the movie, go rent it! Or read the book, whichever you prefer! popcorn::

This is turning into a really long chapter! Sorry!

We stayed at a very cute little B&B in the historic district. Tridging all our luggage up the tiny staircases weren’t much fun, but we LOVED the place. Here I am, on the gorgeous (and really comfy!) 4 poster bed in our room…

IMG_0673.jpg

After we arrived, we had a look at a few maps we’d been given from the owner of the B&B, and went for a little walk to a nearby market to buy some fresh sandwiches for dinner. Yum! We had an early night after that, after a big day of traveling!

The next morning we had a big sleep-in, until 10.30! Yayy! After such a hectic, busy week at Disney World, it was so nice to be in quiet, slow-paced Savannah. Even the toilet flushed slowly! Really! We went for a walk that morning around some of the beautiful old Savannah squares, and to Forsyth Park, where this gorgeous fountain is…

IMG_0654.jpg

(Apparently every St Patricks Day, they put green food dye in that fountain, so the water is green! How cute! :shamrock: )

Savannah was definitely the most beautiful place we went to in America. It might even be the most beautiful place I’ve been, ever! It was all so charming – the friendly locals, the cobblestone walkways, the old houses… everything! The whole place has such a calm, friendly vibe to it, but with an added bonus that every place you went, had a quirky historical story behind it. We just loved it!

Here’s one of the lovely town squares, like where Forrest Gump was filmed! I just loved all the hanging moss, like out of a ghost story. So pretty!

IMG_0675.jpg

For lunch, we wandered to “Lady and Sons” which is Paula Deen’s restaurant. That might mean more to you than it did to us – apparently she has her own tv show and cookbooks? We had the best southern fried chicken ever there!! Yum! :)

That afternoon, we went on an old-fashioned paddle boat down the Savannah river. Nice! :sail: We heard lots of great old stories of local Savannah people, who now still hang around in the form of ghosts, of course! Seriously, if you didn’t believe in ghosts before you went to Savannah, you would when you left! Here’s DF enjoying the sunshine on the boat…

IMG_0660.jpg

Dinner that night was at a cute little English pub, where we had some great drinks and a delicious chicken pot pie! Southern food is great! Well, except for those southern greens from 50’s Prime Time. Ew. We followed our lovely dinner with a quiet night in at the B&B. Life in Savannah is great!! :cloud9:

The next day was my big day… a tour of the “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” sights! Weee! Our bus driver for the tour was fantastic – she’d lived in Savannah all her life, and seemed to know absolutely everything about it. So not only did we see all the famous sights from the book / movie, we heard all about the history of Savannah and it’s people! Yay!

Here’s the house where it all happened in “Midnight” – the Mercer house, which was bought by Jim Williams, who had lots of big expensive parties, and later killed his gay lover inside the house. Yowza! Jim Williams died a few years later – some say he killed himself, some say he had a heart attack, some say the ghost of his lover killed him, and some say he died of AIDS. Ohhh, the mystery! This house was literally around the corner from where we were staying – I may or may not have chosen our B&B because of that. :rolleyes1 Hehee.

IMG_0663.jpg

In the Midnight tour, we also went to the creepy old cemetery where a lot of the action took place in the book / movie. It may sound strange, but we loved this place. I suppose most cemeteries do, but it had such a strong, spooky vibe about it. Like you could turn around and come face to face with a little ghost. Hehee. Plus it really was very pretty.

IMG_0670.jpg

One quick story… during the tour, our tour guide showed us one particular “haunted house”, and said that if you take a photo of the house, your camera battery will immediately go flat. I half-believe in all that stuff, so I didn’t want to take a photo, in case my camera died! :confused3 And nobody else in our tour wanted to risk it either, so we didn’t get to test her theory, until…

Later that night we went on a “Ghost story tour” in the dark, on a horse-drawn carriage. It was fun, and we weren’t taking it too seriously, except guess what! We went past that same old house, and a lady sitting opposite us took a photo of it, and then said to her son, “Charlie, I charged my batteries before we left, didn’t I?” to which Charlie replied, “Yeah Mom, you did.” And she said, “My batteries just went flat. My camera won’t work.” Whaaaaat!? Auuuuh!! We told her about what our other tour guide had said, and she totally freaked out. We asked our current tour guide if she knew that story too, and she nonchalantly shrugged and said, “Oh yeah. That happens all the time. Sorry, I should have warned you.” Seriously. Ghosts or not, something spooky is going on there!

Hehee, back to that afternoon. After the Midnight tour finished, we went to visit the Mercer-Williams house, which is now a museum, and had a tour through there. DF was in awe of all the amazing things inside – like candlesticks which used to be owned by George Washington. I was just in awe of being in the actual house. I kept whispering to DF, “This is where Jude Law stood when Kevin Spacey shot him!” Hehehee. popcorn::

Aaaanyway. That was our time in Savannah really, because the next day, we were heading to Washington DC! We really wished we could have stayed longer in Savannah. We only allowed 3 nights, but definitely could have stayed a week at least. There was so much to see and do, and so many great stories to hear. It really is just a lovely place, and one of our favourite places of our whole trip! We were definitely sad to be leaving, but looking forward to visiting Washington DC… and don’t worry, we were flying this time, not going by train!! :yay:

Next up… Museums, landmarks, and anti-George Bush protesters… we must be in Washington!

OOOOHH! Love the pics! Will read eveything in a bit! Thanks for posting again so soon!

Smooches!

Oooohh... nice report! It looks so beautiful there and your room is gorgeous! Hehehe... now I have to go rent that movie again. My next weekend off I think I'll have to have a movie night and dedicate it to you AussieAngel.... so far, Dirty Dancing and Midnight in the Garden :thumbsup2

i'm so glad you loved savannah! DH and i just adore it - we're about 4 hours away and go at least once a year, if not more. i have some pretty funny stories from there! i just think it's the most romantic, beautiful city in this area. in all the times i've been i've never done the "midnight" tour. i'm definitely doing it next time! i love the movie and the book. and speaking of those ghost tours, we always make silly ghost noises as they pass us, like we're trying to be spooky to enhance the tour, even though we're not a part of it! of course, that's usually after a couple of drinks have been consumed from wet willie's on river street! :rotfl:

and YUM......you got to eat at the lady and son's! i was gonna mention it when you said you guys went to savannah, but i didn't want to rub it in if you hadn't gone by there and i'm glad you did! that's a must-do for us every time we go to savannah. the food is SO GOOD!!!!!!! the first time we went to eat there (back in 2003) we got to meet paula deen - she's so cute and friendly! i was gonna post a picture of us with her, but my photobucket account isn't working right now for some odd reason, so i'll do it later.

anyway, i'm glad you enjoyed my favorite southern city! looking forward to the rest of your TR! :)

Savannah sounds fantastic! I did have thought about visiting Savannah last year, but we finally chose a different tip. Maybe we'll go there some day, it sounds like a really nice place! :goodvibes

And ah! Washington is next! Can't wait to read about that :)

here's the picture i promised of us (me and DH) and paula deen. this was taken almost 4 years ago, before she really hit it big. i think she had a couple of cookbooks out and her tv show at that time, but she hadn't really gotten that popular yet and she hadn't been in the movie "elizabethtown" yet. anyway, here we are.......:)

AussieAngel, I am totally HOOKED!!! I have just spent about an hour and a half reading about your trip ... thank you!!! (I'll have to get my Saturday back up and running here, but this has been a wonderful distraction!)

I agree, Savannah is so beautiful. I took the girls in my Girl Scout troop a few years ago to visit the childhood home of the woman who started Girl Scouts (her home is now the official "Girl Scout Museum.") So if you ever visit Savannah in the summer, don't be surprised if you are surrounded by several clusters of girls wearing matching shirts! We also visited that cemetery because my co-leader had read the book and saw the movie. I don't think she was able to really enjoy it though... our middle school girls were trying really hard to be respectful but were ready to move on to something "fun"! (Can't you just hear the word "fun" in a whiny voice?) We really enjoyed Savannah too.

Okay, I'm subscribed, and looking forward to your next installment! :goodvibes

Savannah looks beautiful, and really clean :) we might have to go there when we go to America. It is sad that you had to leave disney but at least the next place you went to was good. If it had been bad or dissapointing you would have really missed disney.
I am really looking forward to the proposal, how long before the big question?

Hope you enjoyed your weekend.

Wow! Your adventure continues and what fun you had! Savannah sounds like an amazing place - I've never been but want to go now. Now. Maybe this summer, now! I'm glad you enjoyed this part of your trip and can't wait for the next installment about D.C. I have been there - even lived there a long time ago - and I am curious what you thought of this part of Americana. Thanks for some great reading!

Oh, I am so glad that you are continuing your report past WDW. We've really come to know you both and it's a real treat to come along with you on your American tour.

Kathy

He drove us straight to the Bed & Breakfast where we were staying, via some very scary looking areas! DF and I looked at each other in the back seat and whispered, “I hope all of Savannah isn’t like this!” But... phew! Once we got into the centre of town near our B&B, the Savannah we imagined was there. Beautiful old houses, town squares, amazing lush green hanging trees… yay!

I was in Savannah a few years ago for a workshop and I had the same thoughts on the drive from the airport. But once the cab dropped me off at my hotel in the historic district, what a difference! I loved the historic district. It was an awesome place to walk around!

Gorgeous pictures of Savanah. If I can get my parents to watch our kids maybe I can take hubby there. :woohoo: Where did you stay? I can't believe I haven't seen Good and Evil, especially since I live in Georgia.:rolleyes1 I have, however, seen Dirty Dancing many, many times. Nobody puts baby in the corner.

Eating some cheese popcorn in your honorpopcorn::

I am loving your TR! I also love Savannah (and Charleston), and go at least 1-2 a year. The Bloody Marys at Huey's are the best ever!
We are going back to WDW in July and stopping in Savannah for a few days on the way home. Your hilarious TR is making me just itch to go!
Can't wait to hear the rest!!
