So, does anyone know any good musicals that are a bit...off? Be they macabre or just plain silly, as long as they aren't those boring, inspirational type musicals! :rotfl2:

List your favorites!

The ones I own that I would put in this category are:

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Little Shop of Horrors
Sweeney Todd
Reefer Madness
Mame
The Producers

maybe add - Tommy
and Hedwig

Great topic.

And a good list!

Add:
Avenue Q
The 25th Annual Putnum County Speling Bee
Urinetown
Grey Gardens

and
Side Show

ohh - from his list- I thought they had to be on film -
then add Into the woods - my fav.

and Batboy.

Conck, did you mean just movies?

Cuz I'm a big ole' theatre queen, and if you say "musical" I automatically think BROADWAY!

Wally. Into the Woods is one of my favorites as well. Saw it on B'way with the original cast minus La Peters. GREAT SHOW!

Can't believe I forgot

The Drowsy Chaperone
Spamalot
Forbidden Broadway

and
Oh, Calcutta!

Two of my faves were already mentioned... The Drowsy Chaperone (LOVED IT) and Reefer Madness. Although I have to say I wish the stage version of reefer madness had some of the music from the movie... that movie makes me CRY with laughter. I would add Chess and Blood Brothers... mostly because of my love of the music.

Being a b'way boy I would need to add . . .

Sunset Blvd.

Ms. Close tore that stage up in her own crazy way (but to be fair, I did LOVE Ms. Buckly's performance too!)

New movie coming out this month..."Repo:the Genetic Opera." It has Paris Hilton singing, and Sarah Brightman. If you can put two who are at the opposite spectrums of talent together, then you've got my vote! :thumbsup2

And another one I forgot:

Assassins

A musical about everyone who has ever attempted to kill a president of the United States. It doesn't get much more twisted than that! :lmao:

"Pennies From Heaven" 1981

With Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters

I think you need to see Batboy. :rolleyes1

The Rocky Horror (Picture) Show
Nightmare Before Christmas
Avenue Q
Into the Woods
The Producers

And the list continues:

Tick, Tick, Boom
Seussical
Parade
The Last Five Years

and when you think about it. . .
Spring Awakening and
CATS

Evil Dead The Musical! Sick and twisted! And I`ve never seen the show, just the recording. Really hoping for a British production soon.

But one of my favorite musicals of all time is Chess.

I saw that and Into the Woods at the Boulder Dinner Theater with my friends in college.

Then I saw such productions in Denver as Cats, Phantom, Sunset Blvd, and WICKED is just amazing.
