I did AR in my classroom last semester. The reading level is fourth grade but the interest level is high school. (The reading level is determined by a formula that counts the number of words over 5 letters or something like that).

The thing is, with AR they get points for each book they read and have to read so many points a semester. The Twilight books are like a bajillion points so the kids go for them if they can.

Well that's a way to begin A Cullenization of a Nation!!

I can't believe they are on a 4th grade level. What about content? Is BD approved for 4th graders?

My daughter is in third and I honestly don't see the problem with the content. Not with the crap on TV.

They're all scoring 100 so they must be able to understand them.:confused3

There are lots of books worth "a bajillion" points so that's not really the issue either. (They have 12 week goals in reading where they read and test on books for comprehension and vocab.)

Belle, Love the tats! Make sure to apply loads of A&D ointment. that always helped mine heal with out peeling.

CP, tattoos dont hurt as much as you think. I *think* I have 7 now. Just make sure its something that you want to have there forever.:)

I am back up and running. whole modem crisis is over!! Cant wait to catch up!

My DD is 8 too and has an 8th grade reading/comphrehension level. according to the tests at school.

She wouldnt read them only because they have vampires. Shes a little on the fraidy cat side. Shes a nancy drew kind of girl. I am sure she'll watch the movie.

Now my 3 yo will love the movie. Shes a big fan of everything unconventional for a 3 yo. She critics movies like you wouldnt believe. The movie of the week is Zathura. and she is quoting it verbatium. and likes to "discuss" it with me. Why this is happening. what that person is thinking, how do you think they did that/ etc. Sheesh.:confused3 The other day i was informed that she wants to be in the movies when shes gets bigger. :rotfl:

I wasn't saying they didn't love them, just explaining why they are designated fourth grade reading level on AR. Most people forget to factor in the interest level. While some people may not be comfortable allowing an elementary schooler to read these books, reading level is based solely on a difficulty formula and does not take content into consideration.

Mine is like that too....she was scared but I had already read them all twice before the movie was out so I knew what to expect. She loves the movie.

According to Rob the interest (of the younger kids) is in full force! Did you see the interview where he described how much passion was in the request of a 7 year old for him to bite her!! LOL I think they are interested!!!:lmao:

Very true...but there are tons of books in the classroom that they start to read, don't enjoy, and return. My dd has seen the movie and still has no interest in reading the books at this point. She has something to look forward to as she gets older. There are lots of lower level books that are still of no interest to certain kids...it's a balance. Interest/maturity/expertise. Some of the AR books my children have brought home over the years were horrific compared to Twlight, with much lower reading levels. Twilight is like a fairy tale compared to some of the books out there! I've personally read them and my jaw has dropped! :crazy2: There are far scarier topics than forbidden love.

Don't forget that the things people object to are the discussions of sexual matters. At that age kids don't get it and it will go over their head. This was something we talked aobut in my lit for children class. Go back and read some of the classic children's literature. It is very intense, but most kids don't get it. Heck, watch the original Snow White! When you're older and you go back and read these books, you pick up on so much you never noticed. Twilight seems to be like that. It's a fairy tale type story, and while little kids may have heard of sex, they don't fully understand it and so the gloss over that part.

Run and get your Blu-Rays!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. A lot is lost on the younger kids. Since they dont fully grasp everything. they may be able to comprehend the big words in the books but doesnt mean they fully understand.

My DD has seen all the Harry Potters and is now reading the books. and sorta understanding things that she missed.

For example you know the song "Hey Mickey"? ever read the words? i hadnt. always thought it was a cool song. Till DD did it for dance one year and i looked the words up to use them on a scrapbook page and was kind of stunned. But i still let her sing it. Since she didnt understand.:confused3

Every now and again she asks about an inuendo that was made in a tv show, movie or book and i just pass it off. do the "I'll tell you when your older" thing. and she just lets it go.

But if it comes down to it she can watch/read Twilight over half the cartoons out there these days.

When I was a kid I thought the song White Rabbit was really about Alice in Wonderland. My parents did not bother to clue me in and I used to sing it all the time. I still do, but now I understand the connotations.
