Ok, just got back from first viewing with DD13. I liked it, it was good. I was disappointed in some parts. I thought that overall they did a pretty good job of transferring the feel of the book to the movie, but I was a little mystified as to why they changed the progression of some things, when I don't think it would have taken more time to do it accurately to the book.
Do I still have to say "spoiler alert"? now that it's actually running? Well, ok, I said it, just in case.
The meadow scene ended up being a few moments with a music background, instead of the PIVOTAL scene it was. Seriously, if you read the author interviews, you know that the meadow scene was the first one she envisioned and wrote, and the one that inspired her to write the entire book. Stuff was said there, he held her there for the first time-- and she him-- I thought that part was really crucial, especially to show how he started gaining control. And, their first kiss happened when he took her back to her truck, NOT in her bedroom with her wearing only a t-shirt and panties! (She wore sweatpants! Stephanie Meyer wouldn't have written it that way at all. The most you ever get is Edward with his shirt off, before the wedding!

).
Also, if you've read the Midnight Sun draft, the fact that Jacob actually said the word "vampires" on the beach in La Push, and Bella did the internet research based on that, makes quite a bit of difference to how Edward percieves her reactions to him when he rescues her in Port Angeles. So it didn't make sense to me to have her NOT know, already in Port Angeles. He was all amazed that she DID know, and still wanted to hang out with him.
As a PP said, I also was rather surprised to not hear those three little words at all during the film. Maybe they have to hold out to keep up interest in the next one?
Did anybody else feel that the scene where Bella tells Charlie she's leaving, was pretty much underplayed? In the book, she was literally yelling and crying and slamming doors. In the movie she's just kind of acting sad.
But overall, it was quite good. I really liked the look and feel of the movie; the lighting and mood. As PPs have said, loved Charlie (as a native Northwesterner, I love that he's drinking Rainier beer!). Others might not agree, but I loved Jacob and thought he seems perfect for the part, although we didn't see much of him, just like in the book. He really seems to personify the happy, funny, nice guy. I think he'll be really good in the second movie.
Wish we could have seen more of the Cullens-- the kitchen scene with meeting the family was an addition that was priceless! So funny. I started out thinking Carlisle was too young-looking and-acting, but he got better later in the movie and seemed more patriarchal. Jasper looked weird to me. I want to see more of Alice. I liked the scene where she envisioned the ballet studio. Seemed very authentic.
Did anybody notice Stephanie Meyers' cameo?
I did NOT like the ending, just because it made me annoyed to see Victoria lurking around at prom. Makes NO sense, because Edward would have smelled her immediately, and Alice would have "seen" her. It seemed to me like a gratuitous and unneccessary setup for the second movie.
Geez, it sounds like I hated it, but I really did like it. It's not what I expected, but I think they got the look, feel and the main casting just right. I want to go see it again and catch more stuff I missed.
We had a very decent crowd, not a scream among them, just some laughing at those unfortunate scenes that they kind of messed up on-- yeah, Edward's face when he first catches the scent is a bit too much.
Ok, I'll shut up now. Enjoy! I know I will again!
