Tweens and bathing suits

you can teach your daughter to hem them herself, giving her a valuable life lesson she can use for years to come when pants are a wee bit too long for those cute flats.

I can't sew, ok I sew on a button, but she has taken sewing lessons and she hasn't used her sewing machine for her own out of lesson sewing yet. but I could have my friend show her how to do it. dang it you rock. and I'm a complete dork cause i didn't think of it.

My DD is only 7 years old and wears either a 6x or a 7 in shorts and I can't find her any regular length shorts this summer.....it's driving me crazy. I can find bermuda length or what they call shorty-shorts. And I refuse to have her behind hanging out.

I did find a couple of pair of regular shorts (just a bit longer) at Kohls way back the end of March when shopping for a spring break vacation. Had I known what the issue would be, I would have purchased more!

I plan to hit the resale shops in the next couple of days, hoping to find some from previous, saner, years.

I wore short shorts (hot pants, daisy dukes) 35+ years ago as a teen. Paired it with a midriff peasant blouse. Or a midriff halter top. Or perhaps a tube top. Lots of skin showing in the 70's.

Not much has changed in 40 years with teens.:lmao:

Same here-we made halter tops and cut off jean shorts so the bottom of the pocket "just" showed. Look back at your own pictures from the 70's moms :thumbsup2.

My dd is 12. I have searched high and low for shorts that are not indecent. I've been everywhere, even crossing an international border to go to Target this past weekend. Target had one pair of shorts in her size that were not shorties.

Sure, Lands End has some decent shorts, but they're $30 people! I am not buying $30 shorts for someone who will get maybe 10 wearings out of them.

So, if you find some shorts that are fingertip length or longer in the GTA, let me know! She takes a size 14 or women's 2. Thanks.

Kohl's had several bermuda shorts for summer.

OP, in my experience, girls that walk around the pool covering their chest do so in regular street clothing as well. It's a stage many girls go through. I find it annoying as well and broke DD of that habit very early on but it has nothing to do with their swim suits.

As for tugging at their rears--swimsuits ride up, they just do, especially when you are running around, playing in the water, going down slides, etc.

Girls that age can be very stubborn and contrary. The girl you saw might have been wearing that suit to spite her mom who hates it. A friend (or a boy) might have commented that the top looked bad (or too sexy), and that is why she was crossing her arms in front of her. Or, her mom was saying, "I told you it was too small! I told you to put a Tshirt on over it!" and the girl was ignoring her.

Unless you were said girl or her mom, you don't know how she felt or what the situation was.

Yeah, I think this scenario is very likely. It's also possible the suit seemed to fit just fine in the dressing room, but once she wore it out in the real world things started moving and it didn't cover as much as she thought it did.

My now 13 year old DD has been wearing Juniors or Misses swimsuits since she was 11 because of her figure. She hated a 1 piece because it made her belly look big. Hated a bikini because it showed off too much.

We FINALLY found a wonderful 2 piece "tankini" in Kohls. The top is a tank, which covers her belly. The bottoms are BOY SHORTS which cover everything. She was so happy to find it, and so was I.

Fast forward 2 weeks, we are at the town pool. A friend said something about her "assets" ;). She was crossing her arms, and tugging at the bottom all day, and has ever since. She has ALWAYS done that in a suit, even with a T shirt over it.

Its the age, plain and simple.

Dd10 wears skimpy bikinis - it's what she's comfortable in. She wears a size 7, she's short, and comes up as underweight in her BMI, and has very, very defined muscles. She's built like a 7 year old boy body builder. None of my girls wear tankinis - they hate the extra cold fabric. My oldest is curvy, but not chubby (very small waist), and my younest is built like her 10 year old sister (skinny and muscular - turns sideways and disapears).

Yup, no beehinds hanging out here, either. Shorty shorts are no-go in our house.

I was born in the mid-70's, so no shorty shorts for me.

I remember making halter tops out of bandanas. Folded the bandanas in half to make a triangle. Then we used those Home Ec classes to sew one corner down and put a leather string through it for the neck. Then we tied two corners around our back. Pair it with the hip huggers that were in style and we were good to go.

This was in NJ in case anyone wants to know geographic cultural location.

Oh, the days.....

(Oh, and for the record, my daughter does not wear anything showing her belly. Although I am ok with short shorts, as long as the butt cheeks aren't hanging out. And it has nothing to do with reliving my own youth, that is a ridiculous assumption :rotfl:)

Now back to a more modest time......

For a fun place to get funky, fun and modest one piece and two piece swimsuits, try www.splish.com.

You can even design your own suit.

The one pieces are technically racing suits, but not as aerodynamic as the skin tight speedos and tyr suits. Many of them are double lined, which is good for a regular suit, just not for racing.

However, the patterns are so fun that many kids on our team use them as regular suits or drag suits. And if you design one, it is unique to you.

2 words: Lands End. We have outfitted everyone in the family from LE and everyone has always been happy with their suits and covered appropriately.

In my OPINION, many times, mothers of little hoochie dressers are simply trying to relive their own youth through their daughters or are over-achieving trying to draw attention to their daughters to gain attention for themselves. I find it hard to believe that people are not aware of pedophile behavior and want to protect their children from that kind of exposure. It is shocking to me when I see girls/tweens/teens dressed like hookers walking around with their PARENTS while some creepy guy is taking photos with his iPhone. Pedophiles can be turned on more by sexy clothing on a child than one without clothing at all. Please take my word for it; I used to be married to one several years ago. Nothing wrong with modesty.

 Sorry to read that. But think that's the pedophiles issue I am not going to make my kids were full body suits to save them from the creeps. My kids are appropriately dressed. As the mom of a teenage daughter though I can tell you that I just told her one bathing suit is getting thrown out- bottoms too small and I will buy her a new one. I saw a cute tankini with little shorts on one of her friends that was cute and her mom said she bought it at Kohl's. I will also add that she looked extremely uncomfortable and self conscious but that's the child, not the suit. There are kids that are uncomfortable in their own skin. :sad1:

DD started wearing a bikini this year. She wears running shorts with it when she is at a water park or running around outside the pool, because she doesn't like to have to tug at the bottoms. She is 11 (12 next month). She is too long waisted for one peice suits and couldn't find a tankini she liked so we found a cute bilkini at Justice. Normally she won't shop there, but their bathing suits are great. Not too skimpy, but not too babyish either. Very age appropriate.

I'm wondering if some of the girls covering their chest were doing it because things were showing through if you know what I mean. Not all suits come with the cup liner.

That is an adorable suit! Your daughter must love it.

My niece has this problem. She has to special order bras and swim suits from Lane Bryant becasue she is too thin to normally shop at Lane Bryant (the are size 14+ and she is more like 10-12) but she has a really large chest (she wants to have them reduced but the doctors said it can't be done until she is old enough where they won't naturally grow anymore). Normally stores only carry cup sizes that big in larger sizes. Due to this she can't get the same types of bathing suits her friends do since she is limited to what she can special order so she won't fall out. BTW she is 16.

We got DD10 suit at Justice, too. I was very surprised at how cute and age appropriate the suits were...since most of their other clothes aren't!

This is the suit DD has. :) It's really cute.

In 1974, I was 16 years old. My parents were vacationing in the French Riviera. They are European, so wearing a top while on a beach was considered completely optional. They were very, very comfortable with skin.

They brought me back a bikini from France. Two itty bitty triangles that moved on a string on the top and then two itty bitty triangles also sliding on a string on the bottom.

They actually thought I would wear it. Unfortunately, they decided to immigrate tot he US and raise us here, so I was a rather Americanized. That bikini went too far, even for me :lmao:

I still have it and still look at it and wonder - what the heck were my parents thinking?

Thanks. She does love it. I'll be honest, I wasn't crazy about a bikini, but figured it's not a battle I'm going to worry about, especially since it's not too skimpy, and she wears shorts with it when she's out.

Lol - we wore bandana tops here in the 80's, minus the string, so much shorter and tighter! My dd's wear the short shorts - they are VERY comfortable in their skin, but their bellies don't show. And wouldn't be caught dead in Lands End (I wouldn't have been, either, although my mom was a Lands End poster child).

ITA, alot of girls become self conscious of their developing bodies at that age, so covering their chest may be more about that than the suit not fitting properly.

I get my dd's bikini's from Justice, and I only had an issue with one where the bottoms sat way way too low for my comfort. She has several prints in this style. My dd is 13 but is very slim so she doesn't fit into Jr sized bathing suits, and I have to say right now I'm thankful, at least at justice she can find a bikini that gives her coverage appropriate for her age.

Those having a hard time finding shorts, check JC Penney. I found quite a bit for my daughter there over the weekend. Lots of different syles to pick from that won't break the bank and are long enought to pass the school finger tip policy :thumbsup2

I thank you for making this thread! We have a community pool in my town, which I visited for the first time last summer. I was horrified at what I saw. It wasn't just teeny-weeny girls wearing those string bikinis, I saw some plus-size girls and women in them, too! :scared1: I know that some people are comfortable with their weight, and I'm all for embracing your body, but when you KNOW that you will have 'the rolls' hanging off the sides of the bikini bottom or 'the girls' almost completely in people's faces, I say look for another suit. I think modesty is a value that all girls could learn a lesson in. I personally am not comfortable with my body, so I think I will be buying a swim-shirt with boy's swimming trunks to wear over my suit this year. I also think that the bikini is something that very young girls shouldn't have-at least the new padded-cup ones! :scared1:
