Tuxedo for Formal Night/Palo?

We are cruising on the 8/25/14 Disney Wonder to Alaska. I bought a tuxedo to take on the cruise, but after reading several reviews/trip reports I was wondering if I would be too over dressed. Do men wear tuxedos for dinner at Palo and/or Formal Night? We are celebrating our 15 year wedding anniversary, so we wanted to dress up for pictures.

While not many men dress in tuxedos, there are some. I've seen them on formal nights as well as at dinner at Palo.

Unfortunately, you'll see all manner of dress (even for formal night) at dinner. There are those who feel "it's my vacation, and I'll dress as I like". DCL's dress code only suggests attire, and states no swimwear or tank tops at dinner, for any night.

We, also like to dress for formal/semi-formal nights. I hope they don't ever do away with them entirely.

My 16 yr old will be wearing a tux for Formal night on our 7-day Western Fantasy cruise in Sept! And we actually saw a couple of tuxedos on our semi-formal night on the Dream last year!

I cruised with friends a couple of years ago and my friends husband wore a tuxedo. They where various men wearing tuxes but not many. I did fee underdressed in my sportcoat and tie sitting at the same table with him. I think in your situation it's a special occasion so I would say wear it.

My husband always rents a tux for our cruises. He has two different Mickey cummerbund/bow tie sets just for cruising.

I saw one slightly older gentleman dressed in a white tuxedo on our 5/25 Dream cruise and I believe it was on dress up night. I assumed he'd dined at Remy. I didn't ask. Palo is more laid back than Remy. When we dined there, I wore a typical "little black dress" and my DH wore a dress shirt, tie, khaki pants, and dress shoes. We seemed to fit right in as that's pretty much what others wore at Palo as well. There were a few gentlemen wearing sports jackets and a couple of them in golf attire.

One neat thing about Palo is, whatever you end up wearing, the server will match the napkin to your attire. Our table was set with white napkins when we arrived. When our server unfolded the napkins for us, she had my DH keep the white one and explained that since I was in a black dress, she'll bring me a black napkin. I really did enjoy that little nice touch of class...not something I've ever experienced even in local fine dining experiences. However, in practicality, it was a bit of a comical challenge for me to actually use the napkin as it sat on my lap, blended in with my black dress, in a dimly lit restaurant. On more than one occasion, I had to make a mental note to double check that I had the napkin and not my dress before using it. I don't know...maybe classier people who are used to fine dining don't have that problem, but I'm much more accustomed to paper napkins and baby wipes these days.

I own a tux, and I bring it on every cruise. I wear it on formal night, as well as to Palo. Since there were others in tuxes around the ship, I never felt overdressed. However, I'm the type that would rather be on the more dressy end of the spectrum, so being overdressed doesn't really bother me. That being said, it may also depend on the tux. I have a classic black single-button, peak lapel with a U-vest and bow tie. My feelings about it might change if I had a top hat and cane with long tails and white gloves.

What I have is a pretty conservative black tux with Mickey Mouse bow tie and cummerbund. No top hat, cain, tails or gloves for me.

In 10 DCL cruises (including some long ones) we've seen very few men in tuxes in either Palo or Remy. Yes, there are some, and you needn't feel out of place, but its certainly not expected.

I'd wear it. Like someone said, it is a special occasion, so who cares? I would much rather have my hubby show up to formal night looking too dapper, than in jeans & a shirt.

Love to see the tuxedos (and have on each cruise), I think it is appropriate for Formal night and Palo. Even if no one else wears one at least you will look classy! Better to be overdressed than under dressed in my opinion. Our family always dresses up to the hilt for formal night (gowns and suits); semi-formal - cocktail dress and suits and the same for Palo.

I too hope this tradition doesn't die out.

We are going on our first cruise this year and looking forward to getting dressed up, its not often that we get the chance so will be lovely to get pictures of us. I say defiantly wear the tux

Certainly dress up for the occasion and have lots of pictures taken of you. With and without characters (Mickey will wear a Tux too!). And with your dressed up loved ones if they travel with you. Enjoy the night and afterwards enjoy the pictures. You will look great and they will be a nice memory.

Interesting, we just off B@B Fantasy cruise, and on the Eastern, there were a few tuxes (seems the numbers decrease every year), but on the Western, you were hard pressed to find one. (yes, there were a few). Seems people these days are using any extra space in luggage for Pirates Costumes, cause there are sure more of them than there has ever been.

I've rented a Tux on both of our Panama Canal cruises (14 night and the same price as a 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 night cruise = a bargain in my mind).

First PC cruise 2 formal, 2 semi formal and a Palo dinner (I ordered extra shirts and an extra vest)

Second PC cruise I wore the Tux to Palo, formal and one semi formal night.

On all other cruises for formal and semi formal nights I just wear a dress shirt and tie. IF we make it to Palo for dinner (sometimes) I will wear the shirt and tie there too.

Flying across country and lugging a suit is NOT high on my packing list An neither is a Pirates costume -- I have a Pirates tee shirt and Pirate Mickey ears.
