Tutor Costs

I'm on Long Island and I teach high school math.

I tutored during my SAHM years, from 2000- 2005. At that time, the $70 an hour I charged made me the cheapest tutor I knew. (I tutored from MY house, and had the very rare interruption from the sitter upstairs. That was reflected in my cheaper price.)

No one I know tutors high school subjects for less than $100 an hour.

Not really knowing what you're looking for, here's a suggestion: contact any local colleges that offer a degree in either reading or elementary education Ask whether any of their education students would be interested in tutoring. A college student should charge less than a certified teacher.

Just curious though: if your daughter is only 6, are you sure she needs a reading tutor? I'm certainly out of my element as a teacher, but my youngest daughter struggles with reading as a result of Auditory Processing Deficit. What difficulties is she experiencing?

Hi, Thank you for your responses everyone. It looks like we are pretty much in the ballpark I guess. My DD has several learning issues (though no formal diagnosis other than global developmental delays). She has been in therapy for all sorts of delays since she was a baby and struggled through kindergarten. About half way through the year she was put into an intervention class to help her catch up (mostly with her letter/sound recognition/writing and site word help). I put her in a few classes over the summer but she is still struggling so I am hoping that a tutor will keep her from falling too much further behind before she starts 1st grade in September. I guess when I say "reading" tutor I really mean "pre-reading" skills. Also, she is on seizure medication which makes it really hard for her to concentrate and pay attention. Where in Long Island are you? I am in Nassau County.

Thank you again everyone for the suggestions and the information. I really appreciate it.

I'm in Nassau too... I just sent you a PM.

Consider trying Hofstra and Adelphi, even St. John's. And I think NCC may have some education related majors as well.

Hi neighbor! She is actually in a Hofstra reading class this summer. I was going to ask her reading teacher if she could recommend someone also. The one woman I found was recommended to me by her reading teacher from another program that I have her in. Having a few options though is good.

Oh boy. My daughter is going to need Science and Math tutoring for her 9th grade. That is so much. I wonder if I can find one person that can do both classes and give a discount.

It reallly does vary a LOT by region. Most things cost more in the NYC area than in most other parts of the country.

Something for middle and high school parents to consider: the National Honor Society and Junior NHS. NHS kids have to do service, and I know that in my school they're a great resource. Guidance counselors first check with the teachers to ensure that the kid is working, doing homework, going to extra help, that sort of thing. If all that is happening, the kid is matched with an NHS kid with the same study hall.

I had a wonderful lindamode - bell tutor for my son for $25 per hour, she charged about 75% less than the going rate because she was a generous person - those tutors are usually $75-100 per hour

I had a retired nun who came and tutored my ds in math - I think she was $40 per hour.

other tutors we have used have been in the same range

we are in MD, outside DC

My daughters are in a program that uses the Barton Reading & Spelling system it is a non-profit but it is just under $20 an hour. If there are dev. delays you could google the Barton Reading & Spelling system to see if it is something that may help and maybe it could help search for local tutors if it is a program that may help her.

I am a certified teacher in TX with a master's degree. I charge $40/hour to tutor.

My son gets handwriting tutoring from a teacher at his school who is certified in handwriting teaching. She charges $30 and is great! I'm in northern VA where things cost a lot but she is reasonable.

In my school, that would be a HUGE conflict of interest. Any kid in the school can come to me for free extra help. Charging for tutoring any kid in the building is a HUGE no-no.

My daughter pays $45 for 45 minutes for my granddaughter. It is money well spent...My granddaughters grade and reading skills have improved tremendously. We are in Cecil County, Maryland.....

I pay 20/hr for my daughter to be tutored in reading and math (she's a little above her level so it keeps her from being bored). That is about the going rate in KY. Her tutor has a masters in education.

I tutor middle school kids in math and I charge $50 an hour (Baltimore/DC area). I have a teaching cert and a masters.

I may have to up my rates because all of the elementary school teachers charge $60.

What you're getting quoted sounds very reasonable. I charged $40 when I first started teaching 8 years ago.

Many of our teachers tutor children. I don't know of any who tutor their own students, thought. $50 an hour is average for the elementary set, closer to $75 for HS.

My son is dyslexic, and he has an Orton-Gillingham tutor for reading. She usually charges 40/hour, but she charges me 30/hr.

Really? She's the librarian asst. so she isn't "teaching" my son, nor others. I never even thought of that as a conflict of interest. His teacher ask for teachers to tutor him and it went out in a large email, including the principal so I guess it's not a problem in the school.

DH tutors elementary through grade 10, mostly math. He charges $30 an hour in NJ. He is constantly turning down families. Good Luck!

Really? Our office keeps a list of teachers willing to tutor so parents are able to reach out to anyone on the list. It was common practice for students to stay after and have the tutoring done right on school property. (this just recently changed due to insurance issues)

I have 21 years of experience teaching elementary special ed. I have a Master's Degree and charge $30 per hour plus $5 fuel to drive to/from the location, so it's actually $35 per session. I have tutored at my school after school hours and even during the summer without issue. We are not allowed to tutor our own students though. One girl I tutored for 2 years was my student as a 3rd grader, but I didn't start tutoring her until the school year was over, so she was no longer one of my students.

I had to pay my daughter's figure skating coach $44/hr for lessons and she didn't even have a college degree! Why is it that some people will pay for private lessons for something (music, sports etc...) without batting an eye, but when it comes to educational tutoring, they think it's expensive?
