Cast of characters:
Me (34) - Midwestern gal with a little bit of "foodie" in her. I'm not into too spicy, but like to try new things.
DH (35) - Likes to eat with characters. Otherwise, just make sure there's food he likes and you're fine. Sometimes is adventurous.
DS (12) - has food radar constantly on. Has his favorites, but will usually try something when you ask.
DD (11) - lately, constant growth spurt, which means food radar is on even stronger than DS. We call her the meatosaurus because she loves meat more than anything. Doesn't like a lot of fruits and vegies.
We had the first reservation for lunch at 11:30am. I'm not sure if people were dilly-dallying over breakfast with the characters, if the lunch food wasn't ready or what...but they kept all of us sitting out there and we weren't seated until around 11:50am. Didn't exactly make me a happy camper when I had starving pre-teens who had been cavorting around AK all morning.
I loved the pod set up. No actual buffet line, just go to the pod you want and get your food. Surgical strike eating is totally our style, especially when people are hungry.
I can't tell you exactly everything we ate, but I have to say there was a nice balance of African-inspired foods that were more spicy than your average Midwestern meat-and-potatoes person is used to, and some comfort foods that would appease everyone.
Once we were seated, it was quick and easy to get what we wanted. Chris was our server and was prompt with drinks without hovering. He was also very quick about settling our bill, with my DDE card and all.
Overall: Glad we tried it once, but it just wasn't something that "wowed" me. I'm going to categorize it as, "Won't kill myself to get a reservation there, but if we are in the area and starving and this place is open, we'll do it."
So we didn't hate it, but we didn't love it, if that makes any sense.
My only advice is to NOT be the first reservation for lunch. If this is a typical setup, where you are significantly delayed and you are like me, and you like to be on time, you may be disappointed or frustrated like I was. Perhaps making that lunch ressie for noon or 12:30 might be better.
