Turkey Day Gang 2009

I priced it yesterday, and the price of a balcony stateroom was about the same as a cat 10 on DCL - for Thanksgiving 2010. Think we might give it a try.

Hi everyone!

Well, Andrew survived his tonsillectomy...though his voice has changed. I've survived my hysterectomy (and am quite sure the entire 5th floor nursing staff breathed a sigh of relief when I left!) and Steve is (so far) surviving having me at home.

I'm actually feeling really good today which, 4 days post-op I consider to be really good. I'm not ready to tour the parks or run a marathon....but I've not had any paid meds today and that's good!

I can't believe it's only a year until we cruise....but I still wish it was sooner!

Karen

Karen-

We wish you and Andrew a very speedy recovery!! :wizard:

My brother is moving to CO in the Spring/Summer. I can't wait to get out there and try the skiing. He'll be about an hour from Telluride and/or Crested Butte. Do they ski as early as Thanksgiving out there?

Hello all -- wow I feel like it has been ages since I have been here. Not really sure when I last posted. :: SHRUGS ::

I am looking at my countdown clock thinking only 11 months 23 days - oh do I wish it was now. I really need a Calgon Take Me Away time.

Last Sunday my Dad ( 69 ) passed of lung cancer. We found out on Father's Day weekend and almost 5 months to the date he passed. It has been a very very hard week. I am from his first marriage as well as my sister and brother - but sadly the second family has just now chosen to not allow us any of our wishes for his services or remains or anything. My Dad and I were very very close so this has kicked me to the curb. During his dying we were all sitting together in his room and his wife and his son ( my half brother ) started fighting with us and it escalated into a screaming match. How sad... In the end I left the house and drove back home - 2 hours - he passed as I was on the phone with my sister in law. My sister ( who is going on the cruise w/ us ) will be leaving DC tomorrow to drive up and spend the week. It will be a tough weekend since the Viewing and Funeral are on Saturday from 1 - 4. My Dad's wife was of a religion that was not ours - so she has stated that he will be following her religious beliefs and that any requests that we make are not to be listened to. So be it. I am in peace with all the wonderful time I spent with him. I will just miss him like crazy!!!

When I arrived home on Sunday night there was a message from my Mother and she informed me that she had to have emergency surgery on Monday at 12 pm at the hospital I work at. There would be no time to grieve here - I had to rush to the hospital and be with her. She has a mass in her lung and they are trying to see if it is cancer. After doing the procedure her lung collapsed. They inserted a large tube and re-inflated - but that meant some hospital time. I took her home today - and the first thing she did was lite a ciggarette. UGH - I give up. I just shook my head and said I am done!.....

Tonite is my first night of sitting here and actually relaxing - I will go back and read the boards - get a nice cup of tea - enjoy the quietness and dream of my cruise - and tomorrow all the family comes in to stay at my house. Even though the services are 2 hours away - we would rather be somewhere comfy like my house and the DIs boards ..eheheh

ok - sorry to be a downer - but I am glad to be back --- hope to see you all soon - and keep up with all the news --- now I will go back to my last post and see what is new with you all..

Lisa -- :grouphug: I am sorry for the loss of your father and very sorry for the torment that his other side of the family is showing. Did your father have anything in writing? I just don't get why people need to be so cruel. :confused3 As your father was dying he should have had the respect he deserved and not them yelling. Good luck this weekend and I hope things go well for you and your family.

About your mother--hope she gets a good report and that she gives up the smokes soon. I have a patient with lung cancer who turns off her oxygen so she can smoke - so, some people don't change.

So sorry for your lose alwayslisad. And I'm sorry that the other family is making things difficult, that always makes it so much harder.

My dad was going to do some papers to list his requests but lapsed into a coma on the same day - it was very quick. So we did not get anything in writing although there were witnesses - we do not stand to win anything and it only makes for more fighting. the only thing I asked for was some of his ashes to be put at the family plot - his wife stated flat out no - and was horrified that I even requested that - his wish was to be buried with his family..... I told him that if he didnt sign papers I would not be able to do anything - gosh what a diff an hour makes....

My mom is due to start oxygen - and she will ALSO be the one to turn it off to smoke - she said she had to go home cus I dont allow drinking and smoking in my house.... well I do allow drinking - but she is a very bad alcoholic - so we hide that when she is here...

gotta love my family - no wonder I ran away when I was 19 --- eheheheh I was the only sane one!!!

Hi Lisa,

I'm so sorry for your loss...and for all the nastiness that has transpired. Unfortunately, Steve and I have the "been there, done that" experience and the only thing I can tell you is 2 funny things someone said to me once:

1. Family....can't live with 'em, can't kill 'em!
2. Friends are your "chosen" family...'cause you likely wouldn't have chosen the family you were given!

In our combined family...we have the "inlaws" and "outlaws." We travel at Thanksgiving nearly every year (but this one...sigh....) because of all the "drama" that occurs during the holidays with family. We figure that if we only have to spend Christmas with them, we're less likely to either 1. lose our minds, 2. kill them and get put in jail, or 3. get sucked into it all!

I think you are quite the smart one to "walk-away" from the drama that your half-siblings want you to go through and just remember that you loved him very much. I don't know your dad at all, but somehow I think he would smile at your ability to not get sucked in.

As for your mom....unfortunately nicotine addiction is purely awful. I too have seen lots of cancer patients, people with COPD and other lung conditions continue to smoke...I shake my head and wonder why...but in the end, it is their life and I can't change that...I can only change mine.

Again, I'm so very sorry for the tough time you have been having and hope that things get better very soon.

Karen

Karen--

How is everybody in your mini-hospital? I hope you and Andrew are starting to feel better.

Hi Sherrie,

Andrew is doing well. He's back at school and things are fine. My surgery went well...and I'm healing up nicely.

I'm also pleased to report that Steve maintained his sanity...didn't kill either of us...and...most importantly...promises that he isn't looking for a divorce attorney :cool1: !

Karen

Glad to hear you are both recuperating. I was 16 when I had my tonsils out - it was not fun at all. As for your surgery, had that one too - almost 3 yrs ago.

ONE YEAR FROM TODAY!!!

And, we woke up to our first snowfall this morning. Very light - but, it's still snow. YUK!

Chuck, Lisa, and Mason -- enjoy your cruise!

You know, my mom had hers done when she was about 40 and had a miserable time of it. The laparascopic procedure is truly a marvel as I was doing really well the day of surgery and a week later almost felt like I could go back to work.

I can't believe the cruise is still a year away...I know I booked it almost a year ago...and it seemed so long away then so it should be shorter now....but it still seems so far away!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Chuck, Lisa and Mason, hope you all have a wonderful time! Let us know what you think has changed (for better or worse) when you get back.

Karen

Karen:

Glad you guys are getting along ok.

We are also Holiday travelers. It really works out well to be away from all the family drama and just enjoy our little family of three.... Especially when we are at Disney.

Last call..... Any one have Disney postcards that need sent?

Wendy -- thanks for the offer. Have a great trip and please tell Mickey that all 4 of us miss him a lot even though we just left him one month ago.

Hi all,

Yesterday, we saw the new hit disney movie (in my mind) Bolt.
The St Louis Post-Dispatch said it was three stars... but it was better than that by my standards.

Disney and dogs make good movie. Like Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmations, Old yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows and Air Bud. Bolt is a great movie to add on to this list.

Andrew:wizard:

Hello all Live from the Magic...check out the live thread for details on teh week...that said, the weather at CC was perfect and Bolt was very good...
