Turkey Day Gang 2009

Wow! Another wedding anniversary! :bride: Congrats lck33! We are going to have a blast:banana: helping each other celebrate all these anniversaries and such.:wizard:

Karen - you are way toooo funny. :lmao: I gotta say I can't tolerate my MIL either. Not in the least. She is evil... with horns and the whole nine. Thank goodness she lives in Florida and we live in New york. She is afraid to drive and fly, so we don't see her hardly at all. But man, on the few ocassions that I have had the distinct displeasure of being in her presence, I have come to understand the meaning of the word "physco". She really is a entire box of fries short of a Happy Meal.

Now my DFIL who will be with us on the cruise and lives with us and has been divorced from this "physco" for over 20 years is a great guy. Go figure. He is a great "Pop-Pop" to my DD and we all get along great.

JollyTammy - I can't wait to celebrate. I mean great food, great drinks, great people, great drinks, great ship, some more great food....it doesn't get any better than that, does it?

Elsie

Hi Elsie,

Yeah...I'm kind vocal about my "dearly-departed" MIL. I know one should not speak ill of the dead, but I just couldn't shed a tear. I never could do ANYTHING right by her...my furniture placement was wrong...my turkey (that everyone else said was delish) was...well...just too dry. My mashed potatoes had lumps...heaven forbid if I EVER picked out a gift for her it was automatically WRONG! Now my FIL was a sweet, kind and gentle man. He loved to garden and was pretty quiet. I'm sure he couldn't get a word in edgewise with the MIL :lmao: :thumbsup2 !

Glad you and yours are joining in with the Turkey Day Gang. Our "fearless leader" Chuck (Icemanpad) is very experienced with Disney cruises and won't steer you wrong. He got us all linked up last year for dinner and it was wonderful! Prepare yourself though...Chuck's about 6'8" or 6'10"...he's VERY tall. He even made my 6'3" hubby feel like a shrimp!

The group is great...Rob and Priscilla are very nice...Larry and Wendy are a hoot. I think we're cruising again just as much to be with the "gang" as we are because of Disney :thumbsup2 !

Thanks Karen for the kind words...We are looking forward to cruising with the "gang" again, just wish it was sooner:thumbsup2

Hi everybody! I hope this goes where it should go. I"m good at reading these things but not so good at posting!:confused3

We just booked this cruise yesterday. We came back from a Land/Sea last month and we all wanted to do the cruise again. My dh and I are attempting to keep this a secret from our two DDs (5 and 8). I don't know...I'm sure I'll spill the beans sometime cause I"m pretty excited.

Do they do anything different on the Thanksgiving cruise? Is it decorated for Christmas yet?

Anyway, I'll be checking in when the coast is clear from my two nosey kids!

Welcome! And, welcome to the DIS as well. It is quite addicting.
Surprising the girls - that is going to be fun but hard this far out. I wish you luck on that one. We're trying to plan a trip to WDW for October and we're thinking of surprising our boys (8 and 12) and when we finally make arrangements I know I'll be busting at the seams to tell them. I don't think I could make it another year. Can't answer your questions on decorations cause I've never been on DCL (or any other) cruises.

Hi to all the new Turkeys!! :thumbsup2

Karen-

A height lesson from Chuck...the bed and shower are fine, but watch out for the flood doors in the hallways...ouch!!

It was funny to read that I am not the only person with a difficult mother in law. She had decided that we did not have an "appropriate" chair in our living room where she can sit and read the one time per year that she visits from Baltimore....so she bought a chair for our living room!! :sad2: Also, when Mason was a baby (I won't say "little" because he still is), whenever I dressed him in long sleeves she complained that he would be hot and when I dressed him in short sleeves she complained he would be cold!! She is never happy with my choices. However, according to Chuck she actually likes me...go figure!!

Welcome trace, I'm new too. People here are really friendly and lots of warm welcomes. We just booked last week. Been to Disney World plenty but his is our First Disney Cruise. We are so excited. It will be me, my DH, DD 9 and my DFIL. But we all decided as a family so no surprises for any of us.

Chuck - Oh my goodness, are you really that tall? That must be sooo coool. You never have to worry that you can't see when you are at a show. And your kids (assuming you have some) they have got great seats:woohoo: . My husband, he is about the same size as me, 5' 7" but he always says he is taller. I just agree:rolleyes1 .

Karen - sounds like you guys really get along great. That is so nice that you guys also keep in touch and keep meeting up on Turkey Day cruises. Sounding like so much fun.

Elsie

Welcome Trace! Yes, the ship is decorated for Christmas...they had a HUGE tree in the atrium and were erecting a gingerbread house toward the back of the ship while we were onboard (that they finished the day after Thanksgiving).

Rob...no thanks are necessary. Everyone accepted my family into the fold and I'm quite grateful for that. Steve, Andrew and I had so much fun on our last cruise and the Turkey Day Gang was very much part of the reason why we had so much fun! So, actually, I should be thanking you!

Lisa, I read about Chuck's accidents on your last cruise! I'm so sorry and I hope that he's doing well now.

Elsie and Lisa, I think MIL's are difficult or maybe it's just "different" and that's why sometimes we clash. Other times, they just like to stir the pot and that drives us (or at least me) crazy!

For others who are "lurking" this thread is very friendly and you couldn't have picked a better group to cruise with!

Sounds like some of my mother's friends. Hmmm......wouldn't be surprised.

welcome trace!
My MIL thinks she knows more than doctors. My son had surgery on his ankle and the doctor said my son could walk on it immediately--my MIL says the bones will break and he needs to stay off of it. Who would you listen to:confused3 I think I'll go with the guy with the doctor's degree:laughing:

I'm so ready for this trip. We're going to Gatlinburg for July 4th week, and Williamsburg in August, but nothing compares to a Disney cruise:thumbsup2

Maybe we need to start a new "support group" thread for wives with monster inlaws! If we later sold the thread to a comedian for material for his/her jokes...I'd bet we could take all the Disney cruises we wanted!

Hi again,

I haven't been on in ages and it looks like there are lots more people joining. This is going to be so much fun!

So sorry about all the flooding! We've been ok her so far, thank goodness.

And my dh is 5'5" so he has no doorway issues. We'll have to make sure we get a picture with tall guy/short guy/tall guy/short guy. I like to scrapbook and it sounds cute.

You folks are too funny about your inlaws. I really have no complaints about mine except that they won't commit to this turkey-day cruise. Their deposits are on MY disney visa intrest free until 8/14, so there is really no rush, but still, why even hesitate, I ask??? My parents and sister are already committed, but we've cruised with them 2x already. The hesitation is really interesting to me. I had no hesitation whatsoever, it was just a matter of time and budget issues.

I hope you don't mind, but I have a couple more questions I came up with though now that I started thinking about it b/c a friend started asking me for tips this week. She's thinking about going this year right after t-giving on a 4day.

First is - how did you know about the galley tour? It said there was one on the 4 day cruise in the passporter, but I don't remember seeing anything about it. I totally missed it. Can you sign up early - as in before you get on the boat?

Next is, I'm in 2030 next time and i was just looking at the room plan b/c my friend asked me about it. Someone here has been in it already, but I forget who - is the pull out sofa a double or is it twin bunk beds? This will make a difference b/c I'll have to change the queen to twins b/c my kids can't share peaceably.

Last is for you folks that live in FL- my inlaws live in maryland full time but bought a retirement condo in florida. its currently rented to someone else- is there any way they can get florida resident rates? They have a deed but they have Maryland drivers licenses and are not ready to switch quite yet. Is there anyway to get a florida id card or something and qualify or is there some rule preventing it?

Thanks!

Hi Everyone! It's been a VERY long time since I posted, but I've been reading regularly. 18 months to go, ugh. I'll be happy to start my planning soon. I've been reading about the MIL comments and just had to post this. Tim and I are getting married in 3 weeks (we've been together 11 years, and we're finally going through with it). We sent out invitations several months in advance as most of our friends are coming to Oregon for the wedding so we figured they needed time for reservations etc. Tim's father and his father's wife live in Wyoming and up until 8 days ago we had no idea if they were actually going to attend. Come to find out dad is coming BUT soon to be MIL can't make it. She needs to stay at home to feed the horses cause none of their friends can. I just am flabergasted. She's always been a piece of work and I'll be greatful if I never have to see her another day in my life..... Here's another vote for the MIL support group :-):rotfl: :rotfl:

We're staying at the AKL prior to the cruise too, but based on the economy we might only be their for one night, these gas prices are killing us. It's fun reading the posts about the Magic coming back over to the left coast. I'd love to see a ship stationed here regularly with trips to Alaska and/or Hawaii. Mexico was nice and we had a great time, but I think we'll like the Carribean better and would go to the Carribean over and over again.

that would be ME!!! and they were pull down twins --- dd and dnephew slept in them - DJ and Renee at first fought over who would get top and bottom - and for the life of me - I can not remember who won!!! eheheh - :confused3 :confused3 but they are twin size....

Can you think of a way to MAKE them use these beds? so you can get the nice comfy queen??

Thanks Lisa! I know who will have the upper bunk b/c she didn't when we went this past January.:thumbsup2 Now I just have to remember for another 18 months...

We did the galley tour...and so did Rob and Priscilla. As I recall, you can't book before hand....but you can go to the pursers desk when you get on the ship (or the next day after everyone calms down) and ask for tickets. It's really a walk through of the Lumiere's galley into the Pirate Cove galley. All in all very interesting...particularly enjoyed seeing the special made wedding cakes.

Hope that helps!

Karen

We did the galley tour last time. It was really cool. Just ask at the desk for the tickets, their free:banana:

Our last cruise I did every single napking folding, cake decorating session I could. About wore myself out. This cruise I'm gonna celebrate and spend as much time in quiet cove with a drink in my hand and hubby near by:hug:

It is really a neat tour, this was our second time and learned a few new facts.:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
