Turkey Day Appetizers

We eat late- I'm shooting for 6pm so it'll be closer to 7- so I'll put out some snacky-things around 4pm, but it's going to be appetizers-lite. Cheese (smoked gouda and Unexpected Cheddar from Trader Joe's) with crackers, onion dip and chips (BIG treat, only happens on T-giving and Christmas), hummus and cut up veggies, and probably tortilla chips and salsa. I miss the apps of my childhood (relish tray, stuffed eggs, dates stuffed with peanut butter and rolled in confectioner's sugar, celery stuffed with cream cheese/green olive) but nobody here would eat that except me...

Christmas is a different story. Christmas Eve is my new version of Seven Fishes- I'll make seafood chowder. Christmas Day is open grazing on apps/wings/nachos. Dinner is stupidly simple- frozen stuffed shells (from Sam's, with homemade sauce from my freezer), garlic bread, salad. Dessert will probably be ice cream sundaes.

We stopped having any type of appetizers because it was just TOO MUCH food.

Before that my mom always have Triscuits and Wheat Thins with cheese spread. Chips & Salsa. I made Jalapeño Popper dip a few times.

White Trash Sausage Dip
A very redneck dish that everyone is crazy about

1 can Rotell Tomatoes, hot or original depending on heat desired. (I use original)
2 8 oz. blocks cream cheese, softened
1 lb. Breakfast Sausage, hot or regular. (I use the regular)

Brown the sausage, breaking it up into little bits.
Drain excess grease.

Partially drain the Rotell; leaving just a little bit of the juice

In the fry pan stir all ingredients together by hand until well mixed and the cream cheese has melted.
Pour into a casserole and bake until bubbly, 350 for 20 minutes or so.

Or serve it in a chafing dish to keep it warm.
Seems a bit la-dee-dah for white trash though, dontcha think?

Serve with Frito Scoops, crackers, pita chips, or toasted bread slices.
(I will ONLY use the Frito Scoops…it just works, dammit)

Even your high-falutin’ friends will love it ‘cause everybody has a little bit of “white trash” in them.

I love appetizers, but my parents have told me not to bring more than 1 thing because people fill up on them and then don't want to eat the main meal. When limited to 1, I always make sausage balls. When I used to being lots of appetizers, I have done veggie trays, buffalo chicken dip, a cheesy bacon dip, mini egg rolls and other things I can't remember.
