Hi everyone. Question for the Dr's and Dr. Mom's out there.

When my sister and I were little, we would both faint any time we had the tummy flu. It didn't matter if it was food poisioning, a bug going around, whatever- we would faint. Does anyone know why? We wouldn't pass out for long... generally we'd wake back up within 15-20 seconds, if even that long.

The reason I'm asking is because I had a tummy bug on Easter (happy Easter to me...) and I fainted... twice. It just kinda freaked me out, especially since this time I was dealing with it alone. Does this happen to anyone else? I was dumb and just didn't sit down when I felt faint. DUH?! I learned the hard way- got a big old bruise on my arm... thank goodness NOTHING else got hurt! Note to self- sit DOWN when feeling faint :sad2:. I do normally have pretty low blood pressure (like 108-112 over 60-70), and I'm in good health.

I dunno why BOTH my sister and I used to faint when we would be tummy sick. I think it might be hereditary....

I have had a bud and fainted after many bouts of being sick. It was because my electrolytes were way off. IF you are fainting with just very little symptoms or at the start of the bug, I would recommend someone driving and getting more information from your doctor.

Thanks! I should have mentioned that it's only right before I know that I'm tummy sick. It doesn't happen any other time.... so odd?!!!

Next time you start to feel sick, make sure you are taking long deep breaths. You may be nervous about getting sick, to the point that you are holding your breath. Especially if it bothered you when you were very young.

If not, definitely mention it to your doctor. It may just be the way you are, or the doctor may be able to help/fix the situation for you.

That is vasovagal syncope. It is a response to you getting sick and could be anxiety related (because you know you are going to be sick) or just your blood pressure falling because you are sick.

My 14yodd has "situational syncope" with medical procedures.

I would get this sometimes when I still had my very bad gallbladder. It was a vagas nerve thing. Here's a link. . .and you will notice way down on the list of causes is nausea or vomiting. It's the same type of fainting that some people get when they stand with their knees locked, or at the sight of blood, etc.

But as with any fainting. . .it's a good idea to get it checked out by your doctor. :thumbsup2

ETA- LOL! The Mystery Machine beat me to it.

My youngest dd tries to combat it however sometimes she can't.

The last time she fainted she was at the oral surgeon's getting ready for some surgery. The tech was being rather rough with her and she kept telling her that.

However...of course the tech is telling her "oh you will be fine" and of course she faints in the chair. And it is ugly. She writhes and starts turning blue.:scared1:

She finally breathes, they give her oxygen and the doc swoops in and and says..."eh she is fine, people faint here all the time.":lmao:

The tech on the other hand was a bit shaken. Serves you right for being too rough.

yikes!!!!

Fun times.;)

One time she was sick and standing there getting her blood pressure taken, which looking back standing and getting your blood pressure taken is dumb....however she faints and I was holding onto to her.

The nurse says..."hey stand up straight", I turn to the nurse and say "she would but she has fainted".

She proceeds to freak out and then they gave her an EKG. She was fine.

However after that her ped sent her in for an EEG and another echocardiogram just to be on the safe side.
