To remove the onion smell from your hands after chopping an onion, rub a metal spoon between your hands under a stream of cold water.

Since this thread seems to be headed the Oklahoma way.....Hello from Shawnee!

My favorite time saver tip is to always lay out your clothes (including shoes and jewelry) the night before. I also have DD10 get her clothes for the week ready on Sunday. It makes life so much easier!

And, if something doesn't work for you, try something else! I used to spend my mornings yelling, screaming, and fussing at DD to get ready for school. She would spend forever eating breakfast and then we would be running late. By simply having her get dressed and fix her hair before breakfast, all she needs is a two minute warning to brush her teeth. She still gets up at the same time, but she now often has time to sit and read a book and enjoy the morning before rushing off to school. Don't get stuck in a routine just because that's the way you've always done it!

Hi, I'm in Lawton!! LOL

Does your water turn your sink and tub a dull orange color by any chance? Just wondering if all OK water was like that....

Nope, must be Lawton water...too much red dirt that way. ;) Ft. Sill?

We have friends that moved to Shawnee last year. I was born there.

I totally agree with the big blue letters!!

I live by this. I also pack lunches the night before and backpacks are by the door w/everything!
My daughter has to wear a uniform and that makes my life 20,000 million, trillion times easier :)

I use a 1/2 dryer sheet to clean the stove when something gets burned on it (flat top stove..I don't know what they are called??)

If I get a pot or pan that gets gunk stuck to it, and I can't get it off, I let a dryer sheet soak in it, and it is so easy to clean up!

As you can tell, I burn lots of stuff and make lots of messes when I cook :)

Hi Surfergirl, and the other Okies. I'm in OKC.

That dull orange could be caused by multiple culprits: hard water, silt, rust. The best thing I have found to clean it is the Works toilet bowl cleaner, which you can usually get at the dollar stores.

Can't wait to try this tonight. DH is always leaving these messes for me! Thanks for the tip.

For the kids' lunch boxes, I buy the fold over sandwich bags instead of ziplocks (much cheaper). I make out the chip and dessert bags for the week and store them in a gallon zip-lock. That way the food does not get stale over the course of the week.

Some good tips. Here are some we do that I haven't read yet.

We unplug small appliances, chargers, etc when not using them -- the exception being alarm clocks. It really does save on the electric bill.

Also, about the dryer sheets. I used to do half and then cut it back to a quarter -- which did not work. I have settled on a third.

Also, meal planning. I'm not always very disciplined when it comes to this, but I spend so much less when I do it.

I like this tip! I hate making lunches in the morning rush so this is a great timesaver.

I buy the foaming soap dispensers and instead of throwing them out when empty I buy regular hand soap in the big container and put about 1/3 soap and the rest water to refill the dispensers. One refill bottle lasts several months for 3 dispensers.

I use some Suave Shampoo that I got for free. It's Green Apple and no one knows the difference. One time I put a different type of shampoo in there and it looked cloudy and strange. ...but it still washed our hands OK. I've also used body wash that was FARR at Walgreens. So experiment, what have you got to lose?

I'm an Okie too!
I live in Tecumseh, used to live in Shawnee.
Work in OKC, used in work in Norman.

My tip is putting a little salt on your hands when you wash them. It really exfoliates and makes them soft.

Our time and money savers:
  • We use vinegar instead of fabric softener. It works really well and is very cheap.
  • In the summer we dry our clothes on the line outside. In the winter I have a drying rack placed in front of the wood stove. (It helps humidify the air too!) :laundy:
  • We also grate our own cheese. We like to store it in a mason jar. We have an attachment to our FoodSaver that seals mason jars.
  • No cable in the summer. In fact we only have cable during hockey season.
  • Make our own microwave popcorn: loose popcorn in a small paper bag. It's healthier too. popcorn::
  • We have salads for lunch twice a week. I buy bagged salad on sale - 2 bags each week. DH and I each get half a bag. On Sunday night I chop up all the onions, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, etc.. and put them in plastic containers. Then I just take a handful from each and add it to our salads in the morning.
  • As you can probably guess, DH and I take our lunch to work.
  • Instead of buying coffee each morning at the office, I bought a small coffee maker that sits on my desk. I also keep tea, milk and sugar at the office.
  • DH and I are obsessive shoppers. :scared1: Luckily part of the thrill for us is getting the best deal. We are always watching slickdeals.net and fatwallet to see where the best deals are. We also shop sales and use coupons.
  • I Christmas shop all year. (SALES! :woohoo:) It makes the holiday season less of a drain on our wallets.

Oh right, we also don't have children. That saves us LOTS of money. (I understand they can be quite expensive.)

JK!

One more: We often times will make a nice roast for the weekend then use the leftovers for the coming week. For instance, Saturday we made roast beef. Sunday we had steak sandwiches for dinner. Monday we had beef stronganoff and tonight we're having steak and potato hash. Tomorrow night we'll have beef quasadillas.

Only sweets that DH likes are peanut M&Ms. I buy multiple bags after each holiday when they go 1/2 price and freeze them. He doesn't care if he is eating pastel M&Ms (Easter) in July.

We switched over to assorted sizes of small tupperwares for our snacks. Not only is it cheaper (and better for the environment), but it keeps the chips and other delicates from getting crushed!

MapleGirl...LOL I am always on those websites too...have you tried dealnews...love that one the best

All those deal web sites (I love Couponing to Disney) make me spend more!! I always buy because it's such a good deal. Same with the Budget Board in general. Always getting Crocs and Vera Bradleys thank to the BB. ;)
