TSA mess and the police

So everyone is on-board with a large increase in the price of airline tickets to implement a non-invasive search method for everyone (dogs, LEO's on planes etc)?

If the scanners were level 2 there wouldn't need to be so many of them. I'd rather see the money withdrawn from the scanners and paying for service dogs and handlers myself, but I'm not in the position to make any decisions.

Not quite an answer. Are you okay with paying much more to fly if you don't have to have a pat down or a scan unless you set off a red flag??

I'd encourage everyone to chime in as well. How else are we to enact a change unless we know what the majority wants?

No, that is not what it says, read it again.

Yes...it is. And I am ALL for it.:

As nearly 2 million holiday travelers pack Bay Area airports starting Friday, local prosecutors have a warning for overzealous security agents performing the new federal pat-down: touch passengers the wrong way, and we'll throw you in jail.

Although authorities in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties said they have not received any criminal complaints since the pat-downs began this month, the searches can involve touching of the genital and breast areas, which critics say is akin to sexual assault.

I thought you all would enjoy this story from TODAY... The SECOND it happened, I thought of you all.

(While I PERSONALLY don't have an issue with the Scanners/Pat-Downs, I honestly don't think the TSA has a clue what they are doing....)

I went through security this morning at a medium-sized airport. The woman ahead of me had already passed through, and she was waiting on the last of her bags to pass down the belt. As the last bag passed through, a TSA agent swiftly grabbed it and asked, "Who's bag is this?" The woman said, "Mine." They told her that they had to look inside of it, and she said, "Oh boy, it is probably that bottle of Coke I left in there. I am sorry, I forgot about it."

The TSA agent with the bag looked at the "scanning" TSA agent behind the bag screening monitor, and the bag screening TSA agent looked back at the bag holding TSA agent in shock and confusion.

As it turns out, the item in question was ACTUALLY a pair of knitting/sewing/crafting scissors.

They had TOTALLY missed the bottle of Coke. It was all the way at the end of the belt, in her possession again.

Of course, the TSA confiscated it, but would have been none the wiser had she not been bluntly honest.

Just goes to show ya! ;)

Its good that you can fortify yourself mentally lilke this. I could probably do it for myself - but how do I reconcile it for my 16 yr old DD?
I wish I could believe an "enhanced" pat down will keep my DD safe, but it won't. Nobody has been able to explain how this new system will keep us any safer. The DHS officials make no sense to me - one minute they use the underwear bomber as an example for why they need this system and the next minute, another "official" is claiming this wouldn't have stopped the U-bomber. It reminds me of one of the books I read in high school - 1984/ Animal Farm (who can remember :goodvibes). The real bad guys will find another way to get past this. Again, its the non-criminals who pay.

You matter of factly tell her the deal.

My DD15 is flying over the holidays without me. She will be with an adult but not a parent. I'm going to tell her that procedures have changed since last year and that this what she can expect.

:confused3

I'm having a hard time following your train of thought. In this country there is a line where touching becomes battery. If you think there is no such thing as this particular form of battery I don't know what to say to you on that.

Careful with what you post, you could just have directed me to the particular paper and i could have found it myself. I don't mind doing a little work. I'd rather if everyone on both sides stayed point free.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you 'all for it' on here are from Canada anyway? The Montreal Gazette?

Calif. prosecutors say they'll charge TSA agents if pat-downs are inappropriate

Always glad to be of assistance. :goodvibes

Points? For what? Are we no longer allowed to post links to articles?

And it's not MY train of thought. All of that was quoted from the article.

To be honest, I am having a heckuva time figuring you out. Your FREAKING OUT over the new procedures...which is understandable. Then this story about the DA in Cali saying they'll prosecute any TSA agent who touches a passenger innapropriately..I post a link to it and describe it for the group here and even agree with it, and you STILL seem to have some problem with it or is it me? I was backing you up on that one! I'm just stymied why you seem to have some problem with putting links up.

I have a three part answer to this.

1) I would first like to see the scanner/TSO budget redirected to dogs and LEOs. I understand we would still need *some* non-dog handler TSOs, but not nearly as many. And I would think that the scanners would be completely unnecessary at that point. If the dog alerts, then you get a pat down.

2) I have other ideas on how to generate money for this budget, but they're political so I'll refrain. They have to do with discretionary government spending.

3) Yes. Once other sources of funding have been tapped, I would be happy to pay my share of the difference.

All for it and not from Canada. Not sure why that matters? Same as another poster, I am going to be honest with my children up front and prepare them. It really is not big deal to me. I know it is to other people and I do not want to minimize their feelings. I talked to my DD8 about the new screening and she asked why they changed it. I told her they are hoping to catch more "bad stuff". She was very glad they were trying and is okay with the new procedures as well.

To answer the question about paying more for tickets, for my family of 4 the answer is NO I am not willing to pay more for tickets to avoid the scanner.
