TSA Liquid Q?

Okay, I know the whole clear 3 quart bag for liquids under 3 oz. (Thankfully, they haven't said anything to me yet about how many 3 oz bottles I can manage to fit into a 3 quart bag!!)

This is my question though....I have two compacts with lipgloss in them. They are flat, like eyeshadow containers, but have lipgloss in them. Is this considered a liquid or gel, or can I keep it in my purse? I'm really anal about getting through as quickly as possible. Wear shoes that come off easily, set computer and phone in a bin, clear bag with liquids in one bin, carry-on in one bin. I just hate getting stopped for something silly like lip gloss. And since I'm on the subject, I'm assuming mascara and regular lip gloss in a tube is considered liquid?

You should see my "liquid 3 quart bag" foundation, moisturizer, primer, makeup remover, eyeliner, sparkle roll on for MK, fingernail polish, fingernail polish remover, travel size hair spray, travel size hair conditioner...I'm sure I've missed a few things! I don't want to pack this stuff in my luggage because I can lose my clothes, no big deal, but I have a fortune in makeup!!

I can't answer your make-up questions but wanted to clarify that it's a ONE quart bag, not a three quart bag.

Well, I know solid deodorants are not considered liquid, and my chapstick has never caused me any problems staying in my purse. Your gloss sounds the same- the kind you use your finger across the surface then apply to lips?

I wouldn't worry about it staying in your bag.

If it will hold it's shape outside of the container it's a solid. It it won't, it's a liquid.

The only things that need to go in the quart-size ziploc baggie are things that you can:

Pour
Spread
Smear
Splash
Spray
Drip
Drink

In other words, if the item needs to be in a container to keep its shape, it's a liquid.

Therefore, since you can "spread" or "smear" lip gloss, stick it in the baggie.

Yeah, that's the kind I'm referring to, thanks!! I forgot to take my fingernail clippers out of my purse on my last flight, and was actually shocked when I found them in my purse later. Guess they weren't caught, or considered a threat.

I don't know how you will fit all that in. I would pack the makeup remover, polish remover, maybe the hairspray. It's very rare for luggage to get lost, those are the easiest to replace.

I don't know how you will fit all that in. I would pack the makeup remover, polish remover, maybe the hairspray. It's very rare for luggage to get lost, those are the easiest to replace.

Oh, you'd be amazed what I can fit in those one-quart bags!! I will probably split it up some, like you said the hair spray....I usually use my DHs vacuum seal machine for the other stuff, that way they are sealed good and if the lid comes off it shouldn't leak.

True, but there's no debate on whether those things are liquids or not. My description applies to those things which would be questionable, i.e. things that are moist. I never realized that that would need to be specified...

My 12 year old is always looking for loopholes, too. You're eroding my hope that she'll grow out of it.

Individual grains of sand, powder, sugar, salt, etc., most certainly do hold their individual shapes.

I fly quite a bit, and I almost never use a 3-1-1 bag.

I put shampoo bottles and other liquids into a zip-top bag so that they can't leak onto my clean clothes, but I put that bag into my checked bag. By the way, the bottles can then hold more than 3.4 oz.

The only exception is that if I'm taking a morning flight to a place where I'll need sunscreen, a 3-oz. sunscreen container goes into a 1-quart zip-top bag, and that bag goes into a bin at the TSA checkpoint.

I've also learned to avoid morning flights because I don't like to be woken by an alarm clock several hours before I would normally get up, so sunscreen is seldom an issue.

Knowing the 3-1-1 rule is good for someone traveling without checking a bag. And it's important for any liquids and gels you'll need the first day, even if your bag is delayed. I can also see wanting to carry on expensive cosmetics rather than checking them.

But for many passengers who check bags, it should really be a non-issue. Put things in a checked bag, and save time and effort at the TSA checkpoint.

If it's going to be a burden, either in time or finances, to replace specific toiletry items you use, then it's an issue. I am now using expensive Aveda shampoo and I would be highly annoyed if it were lost. And many people, like the OP who stated her reasons in her post, use expensive makeup and do NOT want it lost.

Lol, she's on!! It would cost a small fortune to replace my makeup....I ought to buy stock in Sephora. I did put hair spray, fingernail polish & remover, and shampoo/conditioner in luggage. I love to use the vacuum sealer for liquids.
