I'm just back from an amazing trip! This was my first solo trip, with the free dining plan, which I really made the most of
Tony's (Dinner)
I'd been warned about this restaurant, but as I was in the MK, and I love Lady and the Tramp and Italian food, I decided to give it a chance. Big mistake.
The waiter who seated me went through the menu with me, recommended the calamari to me, and I agreed that it did look tasty. He came back five minutes later to let me know that he'd told the chef to get my calamari started, to 'get things rolling'. I thought this was completely out of line, but I was very jet lagged at the time, and wasn't up to arguing. The calamari wasn't bad, but my main course, the chicken fiorentino was virtually inedible. The chicken was dry, and the cheese on top not completely melted. The potatoes it came with were very much undercooked. While I was eating this, the waiter threw down my dessert platter, which, despite letting them know I had a mild citrus allergy at the start of the meal, came with cannoli and cheesecake in a citrus sauce. This meal was so spectacularly bad that I was considering refusing to give up one of my TS credits for it, or at least complaining to the manager. But, having flown in late the night before, and my body telling me it was midnight, I decided to lump it. This isn't somewhere I'll ever be eating again however.
Boma (Dinner)
Now this was more like it! I had very friendly waiter, who chatted with me, and talked me through everything on the buffet. And the food was wonderful! I particularly loved the potato and bacon soup, the falafel and (of course) the zebra domes. Everything on the buffet was delicious (and believe me, I tried it all
), and there were so many different dishes. There were plenty of chefs about to answer questions, and this is somewhere I'd definately want to go to again!
Le Cellier (Dinner)
This was another fantastic meal. I loved how even though I was by myself I got given the three different types of bread. I had the cheese soup to start, which was amazing, and then the filet mignon, which was absolutely perfect. My only regret is that I didn't make it to dessert (curse the Food and Wine Festival!
). My only (very small) complaint was that the restaurant, being themed to look like a cellar, didn't have much atmosphere or Disney magic to it, but when the food was this good, I didn't worry too much!
Sci-Fi Dine In Theatre (Lunch)
I really enjoyed eating here, and it was times like this when the Dining Plan really made itself useful, because I could never justify spending my own money on the distinctely average food. I loved the atmosphere and the film clips, and really enjoyed myself. I started with the spinach and artichoke dip, which was flavourless and slimy, and then had the burger, which was no better than the $5 one I'd had from Cosmic Ray's a few days ago. My waitress was pretty surly, and threw down my bill while I was eating my main course, without asking if I wanted dessert, which put me off staying for another course. Overall, I'd say this place is very overpriced, and the food is nothing special, but something that should be tried once anyway.
Cinderella's Royal Tabe (Dinner)
I really loved it here. The cast members at the check in desk kept sending me away, telling me to come back in ten minutes, so I could get a better table, after the third time this happened, and half an hour after my PS time, I gave up, and told them just to give me another table. I loved the atmosphere here, with the waiters calling me milady, and telling me to 'mind my royal step'
I started with the cheese soup (which wasn't quite as good as Le Cellier's), and then the filet of beef, which although I'd asked for it medium-rare, still was quite bloody, although they were quite happy to take it back and cook it for another minute. I finished with the ice cream sundae, which was really cute, and it was nice to see Cinderella in the lobby on my way out. The bill came to close to $50 for one person though, which I thought was a lot of money for what it was.
50's Prime Time Cafe (Dinner)
This was easily the best meal of the trip! My waitress/mom Sue was really enthusiastic, and made the meal really memorable. She gave everyone in her section 'homework' (mine was to come up with the 10 Disney films set in England), and got everyone shouting to eachother across their tables, trying to come up with presidents with one syllable last names, or Disney films with one word titles. The food was tasty, I had fried cheese to start, then meatloaf, and s'mores for dessert. It wasn't the best food I had all holiday, but I was having so much fun it didn't matter. It was definately somewhere I'd go back to.
Liberty Tree Tavern (Lunch)
I finished up my holiday with lunch here, and was fairly dissapointed. Being English, all the theming was completely lost on me. The food was nothing exciting, I started with the fried cheese, and then had the turkey panini. I'd ordered it without the avocado tartar, but it came smothered in it. I tried to catch my waitress's eye, but she didn't come by table for 15 minutes after the food was served! I started and finished my vacation with very poor service, with the waitress coming by my table occasionally to thrust a new drink at me, slamming it down onto the table so hard it spilt. My plates were never cleared, so by the end of the meal I had 3 plates, and 3 glasses sitting in front of me. The desserts all seemed a bit stodgy and plain, with nothing particularly exciting available.
Overall, I had a lot of fantastic meals this trip. The dining plan meant that I could try a lot of places I wouldn't normally consider, or be able to afford or justify the cost. I did feel that service was a lot more rushed and less intimate than previous trips, but with the restaurants so crowded, I think they generally did a good job, and I never had to wait long for a table. The only places I tipped above the 15% included were Boma and 50's Prime Time.
The places I'd go to again, even if I were paying are Le Cellier, Boma, and '50s Prime Time.
