Yeah I think people take "buy where you want to stay" a bit too extreme.

If you love Beach Club but you tend to stay in 1BR villas in July, there's no reason to buy Beach Club.

Again, it really depends. If you get shut out of the resort you want, and will be disappointed, then it is important. It is why I just sold SSR to buy more VGF points than I planned because I would rather have home resort advantage for more of my points there than at SSR. It cost me to do it...but now instead of 500 SSR for SAP, I have only 200 SSR, with the rest being at RIV and VGF.

I think there are a lot of people who do have favorites, and if you do, DVC is way to much money to not choose one of those in hopes that it will all work out at 7 months.

Yes but buying RIV and VGF is within the bounds of what's financially reasonable. Beach Club Direct isn't.

I just don't see how it is any more reasonable buying a home resort that isn't the one I want when I know I would be disappointed if I ended up having trouble staying there just to save some money now.

I agree that the prices for the 2042 resorts...direct and resale...make little sense over just staying a cash guest...but then again, for someone who really wants those resorts, I still think buying where you want to be trumps the rest.

I'm not saying buy a resort that you wouldn't be happy staying in. I'm saying if you'd only be happy staying in Beach Club, pay cash.

Agreed. We really enjoyed BCV when we stayed but can't make the math work. So we plan to just tack on a night at BC or YC (prefer the latter anyway) to some of our trips.

Now, when BCV 2.0 comes online, or better yet, if they make a YC DVC, I'm on it 😃

It says your friend is a Dad with a family of 5, so he may want to NOT consider Riviera or VGF. CaptainAmerica and Sandisw said that those are specifically "Stuffy Old Lady Resorts". ;)

(If he has young children and they get rambunctious it might put the other residents in an "ill humor".)

Really appreciate all of the comments here and different perspectives. Lots of good points and gave him lots of things to think about. Last night he ultimately decided to buy his points at Riviera. It had the best incentives with the longest term and he likes the aesthetic there. It came down to Riv, VGF and BLT for him in the end. OKW and some of the other resorts were just not as good value given the shorter term and higher per point price than RIV. He didn't really like the BLT theming but did like the location. VGF the lack of 2021 Points combined with less years and what we both think is going to be a bloodbath now for 2BR units with all the new points being sold ultimately knocked that one out as well. So Riviera it is and if he wants to use them at RIV he can and would have a good shot at getting a SV room and not having to pay the PV premium. And if he wants to use them elsewhere at OKW then he would be able to do that and paid cheaper PP price and has more years. Just wanted to thank everyone for their input and now my wife and I have another family we can plan and do DVC trips with!!

Please tell him Congratulations and Welcome Home! And I hope he read the Understanding UY thread and chose that as thoughtfully as he chose his home resort.

Now, now.. I said I redefined the meaning of old lady resort…perfect places for the young! Lol

We owned at BWV since 2000 but fell in love with Riviera. Sold our BWV points (200 pt contract for 2x what we paid, 25 pt contract for over 3x what we paid) and used those to purchase Riviera. Now instead of 20 yrs left on the contract we have 50 yrs. As for the resale restrictions....honestly the people looking at Riviera will want to stay there (I know we will) so we'll just take our 11 mo window and call it a day. When it comes time to sell I am sure that we will easily make back what we paid.
