I've looked at my budget many times, and food is the only area I can figure to target. The one meat I can always find on sale is pork shoulder. Yesterday I got a 5 lb roast for under $4.

I love pulled pork as much as anyone, but with a small family, one roast makes four or five meals. I didn't grow up eating this product...and have only discovered it in the past year or so, so I don't have any experience with it.

I've searched for slow cooker recipes for other things to do with this, but I think instead what I need is more ideas for what to do with pulled pork.

I've come up with quesadillas, but after that, I'm stumped. If you have ideas, please share! Thanks!

Hi EKW!

Pork shoulder is often on sale at my local grocery store too. I've never made one so I can't help you with additional ideas, but I'd love for you to share your pulled pork recipe. I've never made pulled pork but I love to eat it and often order it when we go out to eat. This could be a new recipe that I throw into my rotation. TIA!

Make taquitos! Yummy! Get corn tortillas, put a little bit of the shredded pork and roll tightly. You could use a toothpick to keep it closed. Fry until crispy in a shallow pan with oil. When done, you can dip in sour cream, guacamole or salsa. Have refried beans or rice on the side to make a whole meal. My DH's family does this with leftover shredded beef, no reason why it shouldn't work with pork. Good luck!

Are you able to find chicken for cheaper too? I can often find whole chickens for under .49/pound.

I never buy pork because I can't stand it. I can tollerate a slice of bacon a couple of times per year but I cannot eat pork.

I am slashing the grocery budget a bit too between now and November (our next trip) so that we might be able to fit in a day or two at Legoland if it is open by then.

Since someone mentioned taquitos, and someone else suggested an alternative protein source .... :)

Please let me put a plug in for baked black bean taquitos. Dry black beans are very affordable and very nutritious, and pretty easy to prepare, if you plan ahead. (I use onions instead of leeks; they're less expensive, provide a stronger flavor that I like, and sometimes also easier to find.)

Off the top of my head you can make sandwiches with it, put it on a salad, cold or hot wraps, chop it up and put it into a hash with potatoes and have eggs with it.....hopefully you'll get more replies :thumbsup2

I found this recipe on another forum I frequent.

Pulled BBQ pork
3lb pork roast (I use whatever cut I find on sale for cheap)
1 can soda (not diet but any other flavor - cola, sprite, ginger ale, Dr. Pepper, etc)
1 bottle BBQ sauce (whatever flavor you like)

Put the roast in the crock pot, and cover it with a can of soda. Turn the crock pot on low for 6ish hrs until pork is ready to be shredded. Shred it up, discard the soda liquid, and put the pork back in the crock pot. Add in the bottle of BBQ sauce, and heat up until the BBQ sauce is warm (about 1/2 hr). Serve!

I made this yesterday using a can of Coke, and the pulled pork was so moist! If we use the McCormick seasoning packet for pulled pork, it often gets dry (DH tells me it's because of the sugar used). But this one was so good and SO easy!

Just googled "pulled pork leftovers" and found people making burritos/enchiladas/tacos, or pulled pork hash (saute potatoes and onions, add pork, and put a fried egg on top). You could also freeze it for another night instead of using all the leftovers. Cook once, eat 4 times!

We like to have it over mashed potatoes, or rice, or noodles with gravy. I like to experiment too by just throwing it into stuff. Soups, stews, spaghetti sauce, salads, whatever! :rolleyes1

When I first cook the roast, I often eat it that night a roast with gravy, mashed potatoes, and veggies. Then I will shred it and use it as pulled pork for leftovers. You can do tacos, sandwiches, and pizza.

Chili Verde. Pork shoulder, onions, garlic, salt and pepper, cumin, green salsa...you can do this on the stove or in a crockpot. Makes great tacos, burritos, over rice....

We are a family of 3 and about 4 times per year, DH will smoke a pork shoulder or boston butt for BBQ (did one Saturday). So after 2 days, we are sick of it for a few weeks. Luckily, it freezes well and we like a pork hash or brunswick stew. Basically, he starts with beef broth and the left over pork. Cooks it down until it falls apart, add what ever veggies you like. we usually do tomatoes, potatoes, onions and corn. cook until the taters are done. Also, we save some of the pulled pork for sandwiches in a few weeks when we don't feel like cooking. Goes straight from the freezer to the microwave. Yummy!

My pulled pork recipes is uber easy.....

1 pork shoulder (any size)
2-3 TBSP of liquid smoke

Place meat in crockpot with liquid smoke, cook on low for 12 hours. Shred and enjoy.

(Seriously, don't add any other liquid!!!)

We eat it as pulled pork the first day, then usually pork & noodles the 2nd day. Freeze anything left after that for quick bbq for lunches. Or my husband will use some in omelettes.

Pork & Noodles -- just like beef or chicken and noodles, except you use pork. I use either chicken or beef broth to cook my noodles in and add my pork. Yummy....served over mashed potatoes.

bbq nachos! had this at the ball field a week ago, it was sooo good. Also have had the bbq chicken nachos at smokey bones. Really yummy

You can make inside-out eggrolls. Shred it and stir fry it with cabbage and all the seasonings.

Is there a bone in it? If you have a food processor you can make breakfast sausage. It won't be greasy at all, my local grocer does this.

yum - I really would like to have a meatless meal once a week.

1 pork roast, diced potatoes, 1 onion ( I use large one, we like onion)
2 sliced apples & chicken stock in crock pot. Cook about 6 hrs. One pot meal with a little sweet. Saw it one Rachel Ray, DH loves it.
You can also cook pork with sauerkraut. It's a PA Dutch thing, but good.

I didn't look but whenever I have something and I don't know what to make with it. I go to a web site called. www.allrecipes.com. you put in Pork Shoulder and see what comes up. People rate the recipes and even make adjustments. It's a great site. Maybe try on their.

If you use different seasonings (bay, thyme, sage, etc) but basically make pulled pork from it, you can make a great pork pie filling. I often do this with leftover pork roasts thrown into the food processor. If you cook leftover minced pork with onion and pepper, it makes a great dumpling filling.

We buy large pork shoulders too. We have a meat grinder and make our own sausage with it. Another thing we do is take a pound off of it and cube it up small then use that for fried rice.
