trying to decide

So as I sit here we found a way to make things work and possible get to Disney this year. Here is my dilemma. ....I would like to go in august, I know it's hot but then I would not have to pull DS out of school, and its a lot closer. I'm not sure we will tow the camper down as I'm a little nervous about that being our first trip with towing. On the other hand we do have a reservation room only for the fort that I completely forgot about in Oct 18-25. We would have a little more time to get use to towing the trailer. Plus the august crowd calender shows smaller crowds then that week in October. Any advice or suggestions?

Since you asked, I'm in favor of the October date if your child is in elementary school (5th grade or younger). Once our kids got to middle school and above, taking them out was a hassle with the school getting the absence excused. But in elementary school we could do it without the hassle.

You didn't mention the age of your son but that's my take on it. August would probably work but I think it would be a whole lot more enjoyable all the way around in October.

Hey Bama ed, he will be in second grade the only problem is that last year he struggled a little bit with reading and was put into a reading support group. So I'm a little worried about pulling him out of school. I'm also super anxious to go but like I said I don't think it should be the first trip with the trailer or the newly finished truck. But I also don't wanna book a room. I should just be grateful I could not go at all :/

Go for the October dates as Bama Ed suggested. The weather should be divine, which would make for a much more enjoyable trip for everyone.



Reading skills will get better over time, but you can work with him now before school starts to give him a head start over second grade. The biggest gift you can give to him now is reading to him every night before bedtime.

Good luck in deciding. You'll have a fun trip, either way.

I also thought I might mention that Fort Camper Rental has pop-ups for rent for $69 per night. If you add in the cost of a pop-up site, that should be much cheaper than the cabin.

I too am in favor of October.

My daughter struggled with math all throughout elementary school. In the meantime we pulled the kids out of school for a week to go to Disney two non-consecutive years. My daughter actually came a hair's breath from failing math in 5th grade. During middle school things started to click. Her first year in high school she ended up getting an award for the highest overall grade in math in her high school.

Elementary school is important, but missing one week to be with family at the happiest place on earth is not going to hurt in the long run.

I still struggle with math (58 years young) and My wife and I are going to be there August 3 for our ANNIVERSARY! My kids (4) all struggled but suddenly a light came on and-----. With help of loving and caring parents which I know you are he will be great!

Also have him read outloud to you daily..anything from the back of the cereal box to a recipe as you make dinner and especially anything related to the Disney trip...unless it is to be a surprise. Collect reading material on the subjects he is most interested in and have him share the new info with you by reading it to you. Many reading difficulties can be overcome with daily practice.

Thanks everyone for the advice, we are going to sit down tomorrow and decide what we will do. Its so hard for me to wait all the way to October lol. I have half my family telling me to just load up and go and the other saying that's insane to do for our first trip! Hopefully I can make a decision!

If the crowd calendar looks better for October, and you feel that you can get things together soon for your trip, then maybe that would work better for you and your family. You wouldn't have the worry about taking your child out of school, and the wait for the trip would not be as long.

I didn't understand from your post if you were planning on taking your camper or renting a cabin. You could always look into renting a pop-up, and that would cut the costs a bit.

If you're feeling that you are ready to "get out of Dodge", then I'd say pack your bags and get going in August!

Hi Sweet Maxine-

DH is worried about the heat and our youngest. We have done august before but never with DS 2 just DS when he was 6. This would also be our very first trip with our new 25ft travel trailer. We towed a pop up to cape may but that was about it for DH and towing.

Its a little cheaper for us to go in August then October, we would get a room as gas is what is really killing us.

We are going to sit down and discus it tomorrow so hopefully we can come up with something.

You could enroll in the Y.E.S. or youth education series program. He could get some hands on learning in the park. Also sometimes schools will count this as credit since its the same programs that school bands enroll in when the kids get to march in the different parades. It is pretty neat. We got to ride space mountain with the lights on.
