Trying to decide where to stay...but need some help

I will be going in November with my son for his 7th birthday. It is a surprise trip. I am working on where to stay right now, but have a question I am wondering if anyone can help me with.

My son is very modest. He is so funny about it. And I started thinking he will probably hate staying in the same room with me. LOL! The indignity....

Are there any hotels, either the Disney ones or others, that have semi-private areas? Such as a pull out sofa away from the bedroom?

Its kind of a silly thing to worry about, but just crossed my mind and thought I would see if anyone had any suggestions.

LOL! And after you're going to surprise him on his birthday! I would look into getting a suite at a non-Disney property because you'll end up paying a lot extra if you get a suite onsite. There are lots of choices nearby: Embassy Suites, Portofino Inn & Suites, Carousel Inn, Hampton Inn, Peacock Suites, Hawthorne Suites, Ramada Inn, and Residence Inn to name a few.

I've heard good things about the new Embassy Suites--I've seen it but haven't stayed there. We stayed at Portofino last time, and it was fine. I've heard some not-so-good things about the Hawthorne Inn. Carousel is probably the closest--just across the street.

My son is also very modest, but he always just changes clothing in the bathroom. We have never had any problem with him sleeping in the same room. I also change either while he is in the bathroom or step around the corner myself to change so as not to embarrass him.

The closest to the main gates of the parks is the Desert Inn and Suites. It is very short walk across the road and into the parks. It is also usually not to expensive.

Embassy Suites on Harbor Boulevard is wonderful! It has a large bedroom with 2 double beds (I think they may have some rooms with 1 queen size bed instead of 2 doubles) and a door to separate it from the rest of the suite. there was also a large bathroom, a kitchenette, and a living room area with a tv and a sofa bed. The hotel is only a few blocks away from Disney, and it took about 10 minutes to get there. They have shuttles that run every half hour, but we never used them.

We were able to get our room for only $110 per night through Expedia, but it had to be paid in full when we made reservations.

Last October we stayed at the Desert Inn and Suites. It is across the street from DL and only a 5-7 minute walk. We had a parlor suite and it had a living room area that has a pull out sofa bed, TV, fridge, microwave. Then you walked thru a door to the bedroom area. Two Queen beds, tv, sink outside the bathroom, and dresser. We paid 69.00 per night for the room and had no problems there.

Then in March we stayed at the Best Value Inn ORANGE (it's on Chapman) and used to be a Residence Inn. We had the Studio, but it was huge. It is all one room and has a pull out sofa bed and a Queen bed, but the bathroom is large and has a sitting area out side the toilet/shower area. The bathroom/sitting area is kinda down a little hallway that you can not see from the living room couch, but you can see it from the bed. Each room has a full sized kitchen, so you can cook if you want. They provide pots and pans, plates and such. They will even go to the store and get groceries for you and you are only charged the grocery charges, not a shopping fee. This place has a hot breakfast AND Dinner each day, but you would have to take their shuttle or drive to the park (it was about a 5-7 minute drive). We like the property, but is in need of updating. Clean, but could have used a fresh coat of paint and new carpet. The staff was great and because of the free meals, we only had to buy lunch in the park and our food budget was less than 70.00 for 5 days.

I also have stayed at the Carousel Inn but only in a standard room, so I have no info on suites. But the Carousel was clean and had a decent free breakfast. Standard rolls, muffins, fruit, toast.

I agree the Embassy on Harbor is great(but one of our room had 2Q's and the other had one King not doubles)We really enjoyed our stay there and their shuttle is great, it's a full sized bus. This is the Garden Grove Embassy.

Desert Inn is fine, plain and basic but fine and within walking distance.

I stayed at the Best VAlue Inn & Suites less than two weeks ago and it was okay, the room were very large and housekeeping was great, but I prefer to be closer to the park

BW Park Place Inn has "mini-suites" which means it has two Q's and a sofabed but the sofabed is only seperated by a half wall. It also has a large frig and a microwave and your breakfast can be either continental or strawberry topped pancakes. I like this hotel best out of all the Harbor places I've stayed at. It is located right at the crosswalk to the Disneyland entrance and is even closer to DL than Paradies Pier!

I have also heard that the Park Inn International has very large spacious rooms.

We were at Desert Inn and Suites just last week. Our son took the front room and sofa bed. The location is so close, we loved it. I think the walk to the entry of DL may be shorter from Desert Inn than from the Disneyland Hotel! Our cost with AAA discount was about $110 per night. We'd definitely stay there again.

I just remembered another plus about the Desert Inn and Suites. You can watch the fireworks from their roof observation deck. It's a great view and no crowds.
