I'm trying to book my first trip to WDW, after a lot of researching. I have complex needs, I use a power wheelchair and service dog, and travel with a personal attendant. I saw the perfect room, even saw a video of one of the rooms, actually 2 rooms, at All-Star Sports. It was a fully accessible King room with an attached double bed room. As I travel with an attendant, I would need some space for her that is separate from me. I like/need my privacy when I settle at night and for sleeping, but need my attendant close by for night time emergencies/medical needs.

I have emailed/FB with to two different travel agents from two different companies that claim the specialize in Disney trips, but both say they have never heard of this type of room. I go to the WDW website and see them listed there.

What am I missing? Is it a pipe dream that these 2-room rooms exist? It will be really expensive to have to pay for 2 different rooms so I can take my dream vacation, maybe even too expensive.
Please help, I am feeling really discouraged about this, but finally have the means to go and strike-off a bucket list item. HELP???

There are suites at All Star Music that might work for you. But they don't have king beds. They have a queen in one room and a sofa, chair and ottoman (all fold out to beds) in the living room. They have two bathrooms and a small "kitchen" area with a small fridge, sink and microwave.

NM. Looks like POOHsie has the info you need.

Disney does have these accommodations for the handicapped folks who need them. They are booked thru "Special Needs" folks at Disney Resorts. There are relatively few guests who require these type of rooms, so generally most people aren't aware. You should start by calling directly to Disney Resorts. Tell them you have a Special Needs -- Accessibility booking. Describe the room type you're looking for and your special need requirements. The rooms are usually called (something like) Accessible King-Double either with roll-in shower or tub & railings. Disney will find you what's available thru special needs. Since there are few rooms, perhaps one of the other All Star Resorts might have availability instead of All Star Sports. I was at Pop Century last year in the King-Double with roll-in shower. I think all Disney resorts have them, in some configuration or another.

FYI, I have never requested this type of room online. Always with a phone call -- even to a travel agency. Online just isn't set up for other than every day-regular bookings. You must make a personal call and speak with someone.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU POOHsie!!!!
I will connect with someone specific at Disney, but my disabilities limit my use of a telephone. Do you think I would be able to talk to someone through the 'chat' option? I can also communicate by email very successfully. I was hoping one of these 'Disney Agents' would be able to assist me, especially since I have some here in my area (Ontario, Canada), but I guess using Disney employed agents will work too.
I'm off to talk to Disney!!

Try the chat or email. Explain your difficulty with phone use. Explain your requirement for the special needs booking, so they get you to the right people, who know what you are talking about, and know how to accommodate you. Good luck.

But wouldn't this room be the same as a two room suite which is actually more than 2 rooms? So OP getting this room is probably going to cost you more than 2 rooms.

So, my convo with Disney Chat went like this:

Thank you for contacting Disney. Please hold while we route your chat to a Disney Cast Member who will help you with your question.

Welcome to Disney! My name is Jenny. How may I help you today?

you: what kind of room options are available to me as a person with complex disabilities, power wheelchair, and has an attendant traveling with me? I would like to stay at Pop Century.

Jenny: We do have accessible rooms available for guests with disabilities.

Jenny: Have you had a chance to review our web site at www.disneyworld.com to check for pricing and availability? Our web site is the best source of information with regards to pricing and availability.

you: yes, I have seen the site, but would like to know if there is a type of room where I and my attendant could each have some privacy for sleeping and hygiene needs?

Jenny: If you are interested in Disney's Pop Century Resort - Classic Years, I would recommend getting connecting rooms.

you: Is having to buy 2 rooms my only option? Is there a way to speak to a disability specialist?

Jenny: Disney's Pop Century Resort - Classic Years does not offer separate accommodations.

Jenny: Disney's All-Star Music Resort and Disney's Art of Animation Resort offer family suites which provide two full restrooms and separate sleeping areas.

you: What is a 'roll-in shower, 1 king, 1 double room' at Pop? is the room bigger to accommodate the two different sized beds?

Jenny: The room is the same size; however, they are set up to accommodate a guest with a wheelchair as well as the restroom being wheelchair friendly.

Jenny: Anything else I can answer for you today?

Jenny: We have not heard from you. Do you wish to continue the chat?

I guess I will try an email next?

You are asking for free accommodation for your attendant and Disney is not obligated to provide that. There is room for attendant to stay with you in the room. If you want privacy from your attendant, you are going to have to pay for it. Disney is not going to comp you a,second room because you want privacy. That is a choice. Not a need.

MarfEm, the Roll-in Shower, King-Double room that the agent described is what we're talking about. I imagine the chat people aren't trained about what that room layout is. You're asking for a description of the room. Someone at Disney should know the answer to that.

When I have an important Disney issue, and I want timely and accurate response, I use email to contact Disneyworld at
Explain your phone difficulties. Explain you need for "special needs" booking help. Explain the room needed and why. You'll get answers thru this starting point. If they can give you a direct email contact for your future accommodations in regard to special needs rooms, try to get one.

Actually stitchlovestink, Disney is very accommodating to people like me who have complex disabilities. They do have rooms that can accommodate my and my attendant with privacy, it is just a matter of discovering how to access them. Unless you have walked in my shoes, or in my case "rolled in my chair", you have no idea what I might NEED. Disability is not a choice.

Thanks again POOHsie, I just did that! Really hoping an email will get me to the person I need to connect with. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions. :thanks:

Usually takes 1-2 days to get a response back from Disney. If you can get confirmation that the Roll-in Shower King-Double is what you are hoping it is, and it's a bookable category online, then you can book this online on your own, today and in the future.

I believe they use to provide a second room because all the handicap rooms had one king. Now they changed that so there are two beds. If you need or wish a separate room for you companion you have to pay for it.

I believe all room types can be booked online, without requiring a phophone call. You should be able to see what IS currently available online, though I'm not sure if the website will show room types for which there us no availability for your dates. As mentioned, there may not be many King-Double rooms at any given resort and may get booked early.

Enjoy your vacation!

that is true. The 2010 changes to the ADA took effect March 15, 2012. They say that:

1) Reservations made by places of lodging.

A public accommodation that owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of lodging shall, with respect to reservations made by any means, including by telephone, in-person, or through a third party –

(i) Modify its policies, practices, or procedures to ensure that individuals with disabilities can make reservations for accessible guest rooms during the same hours and in the same manner as individuals who do not need acces- sible rooms;

(ii) Identify and describe accessible features in the hotels and guest rooms offered through its reservations service in enough detail to reasonably permit individuals with disabilities to assess independently whether a given hotel or guest room meets his or her accessibility needs;

(iii) Ensure that accessible guest rooms are held for use by individuals with disabilities until all other guest rooms of that type have been rented and the accessible room requested is the only remaining room of that type;

(iv) Reserve, upon request, accessible guest rooms or specific types of guest rooms and en- sure that the guest rooms requested are blocked and removed from all reservations systems; and

(v) Guarantee that the specific accessible guest room reserved through its reservations
service is held for the reserving customer, regardless of whether a specific room is held in response to reservations made by others.

You will find it on page 39 on this document.
http://www.ada.gov/regs2010/titleIII_2010/titleIII_2010_regulations.pdf

So, as of March 15, 2012, reservations are made in the same ways as for other guests - by phone, email, travel agent or website. The website shows the rooms that are available; if nothing is listed for your dates, it could be nothing is available because the reservations for ADA compliant rooms are required to be removed from view on the system once they have been booked.

At one time, most of the accessible rooms with roll in showers had one King bed because 2 beds did not fit. That King room only slept 2 guests.
They have renovated most of the roll in shower rooms to have 2 beds now, so they are able to sleep 4, the same as other rooms.
Since the room will sleep 4, if there are only 2 people, they would not need to share a bed. There is not a requirement that 2 rooms be provided, so if you want 2 rooms for more privacy, you will likely need to pay for the second room.

YOU see it as a need but Disney and ADA will see it as a Want...therefore requiring you to pay for the additional room since it is not a necessity. They have to provide equal accommodation, not better. The room accommodates more than one person. If I am traveling with another person who is not a relative and I want privacy from them, we have to pay for separate accommodations and not expect Disney to provide it at no additional cost. Unfortunately, sometimes being disabled is more costly. Of that I am aware.

I'm going to close this at this time. The question was answered.
