We were thinking of doing Trunk Bay on our own on our upcoming Eastern cruise. Can anyone who has done this please tell me what ferry/water taxi you used, how long it took, how much it costs, did you have to rent a car to get to it, etc...We're just interested in more beach/snorkeling time than is allowed on the excursions listed with Disney.
TIA

We've done St John on our own during 3 of our 5 Eastern cruises. Its easy to rent a car and catch the car ferry at Red Hook over to Cruz Bay. Costs involved are:

Jeep Rental: about $60 (Avis and Budget within walking distance)
Ferry: about $35 (make sure you check schedules and return on same Ferry boat company)

Driving time from ship to Red Hook is less than 30 minutes. Make sure to pack a soft sided cooler so that you can take a picnic lunch to St John to maximize your beach/island time.

have a great cruise!

You don't need to rent a car, if all you plan on doing is going to trunk bay. You can take a taxi from the pier to Red Hook for the ferry. Cost is usually around $6 pp. Then take the ferry across to St. John, cost is $3pp for adults and $1pp for children. Then after arriving in Cruz Bay, St. John, take a taxi over to Trunk Bay, that probably will run you about $5pp again. Then do everything in the reverse to get home. I usually advise leaving Trunk Bay around 130PM to give you enough time to get back to Cruz Bay to take the 2:00PM ferry back to St. Thomas. The 3PM ferry can be a little hectic, since St. Thomas becomes a virtual traffic jam on port days. You might miss the 4:30PM all aboard from the Magic, if you get stuck in the traffic. There is an entrance fee to Trunk Bay also, but there is a $15 family plan that will cover everyone. If you have any questions, please ask. We travel to St. John about once a year.

Thank you for your replies! :flower:

jel0511, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. We are only interested in Trunk Bay this time, so we wanted to get as much beach time there as possible. (and at a reasonable price) So to know that the only cost involved will be ferry, taxi, and admission to the beach is good news. The car rental thing was a little intimidating, and it was beginning to sound like more of a hassle than we were looking for. So thanks for the good news!!!
